We report the case of an 8-years-old girl with recurrent pulmonary infections and wheezing since infancy, in whom asthma and immunoglobulin-G deficiency were diagnosed at the age of 7 months. Since then, the patient was treated for asthma without any satisfactory control of the disease. Cardiomegaly was finally diagnosed radiologically that led to cardiac assessment. Echocardiography suggested left sided partial anomalous pulmonary venous return that was not confirmed at angio-computed tomography scan and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Instead, total absence of the pericardium with relati

PURPOSE: Paediatric cervical spine injuries are fortunately a rare entity. However, they do have the potential for devastating neurological sequelae with lifelong impact on the patient and their family. Thus, management ought to be exceptional from the initial evaluation at the scene of the injury, through to definitive management and rehabilitation.
METHODS: We set out to review cervical spine injuries in children and advise on current best practice with regards to management.
RESULTS: Epidemiology, initial management at the scene of injury, radiological findings and pitfalls of cervical sp

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains a public health problem in developing countries and is associated with lethal central nervous system complications. Intracranial tuberculomas occur in 13% of children with neurotuberculosis. Patients with trisomy 21 have an increased risk for stroke, which usually stems from cardiovascular defects.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 12-year-old Sudanese boy with trisomy 21 who was presented to our hospital with focal convulsions and right-sided weakness. The results of neuroimaging and histopathological examinations were consistent with cerebral tubercul

UNLABELLED: We report the rare association of Caroli disease (intrahepatic bile duct ectasia associated with congenital hepatic fibrosis), bilateral cystic renal dysplasia, situs inversus, postaxial polydactyly, and preauricular fistulas in a female child. She presented with end-stage renal disease at the age of 1 month, followed by a rapidly progressing hepatic fibrosis and dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts, leading to secondary biliary cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Combined liver-kidney transplantation was performed at the age of 4 years, with excellent outcome. DNA analysis sho

We describe a 46-month-old child presenting with developmental delay, mild facial dysmorphism, micropenis, strabismus and striking multiple cysts of the corpus callosum who was found to have a de novo interstitial 3.1 Mb 15q24.1q24.2 microdeletion using a 244 K microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH). The cystic lesions were located in the anterior half of the corpus callosum and did not take up gadolinium contrast. There was no other brain abnormality, and the gyral pattern and myelination were normal. There was no history of infectious disease or vascular injury and a

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar disc herniation is a common condition in adults, uncommon in adolescents and exceptional below the age of 10 years.
CASE REPORT: We report on a 6-year-old boy who presented with low-back pain and sciatica after having sustained an injury in a rear-end automobile accident. Due to our limited experience with protruded discs in this age group, we decided to be conservative initially. However, the persistence of incapacitating pain prompted surgical treatment. Operative findings consisted of a torn annulus, attached at one end to the cartilaginous plate, which formed a major

CASE REPORT: T., a ten-year-old boy, was admitted for a prolonged fever associated with meningism. Laboratory tests showed an important inflammatory response, mild renal failure and coagulation disorders. On admission, the chest X-Ray and the cerebrospinal fluid were normal. He rapidly developed shock, acute abdomen, oxygenodependency, pneumonia and bilateral pleural effusion. No improvement was observed after 48 hours of cefotaxime therapy. Hist

Endobronchial neurogenic tumours are exceptional and little known. The authors report two cases of such tumours: a neurofibroma of the right main bronchus in a 32 year old man and a schwannoma of the left main bronchus in a 10 year old child. Pneumonectomy was necessary in both cases due to destruction of the pulmonary parenchyma distal to the obstruction. The incidence of this type of tumour is estimated to be between 0.2 and 4%. They may be either schwannomas or neurofibromas, the discovery of which always raises the problem of the possible association of von Recklinghausen's disease maligna

A case of congenital atrioventricular block in a newborn whose mother presented with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is reported. Despite intensive care the child died a few hours after birth. Serial sections of the heart could be examined. Histology provided information on the appearance and distribution of the lesions. In particular, the sinus node was small for the child's age, and its supplying artery was found to have a hyperplastic media with adventitial sclerosis; the interatrial and interventricular septa showed subendocardial fibrosis invading the adjacent myocardium. Owing to the

We report a rare case of a rhabdoid tumor of the elbow in a 6-year-old child. Rhabdoid tumors are aggressive and rare neoplasms, usually found in the kidneys or soft tissues, and their occurrence in the elbow is exceptional, potentially delaying diagnosis. Imaging plays a key role in the evaluation, allowing assessment of tumor extent and its relationship with surrounding structures. In our patient, it revealed a solid, infiltrative mass in the distal third of the long head of the left biceps, with lobulated contours and intermediate T2 signal, showing moderate and heterogeneous enhancement af

Early identification of asymptomatic hydatid cysts, produced by Echinococcus parasites in their larval form, is crucial due to their frequent late-stage diagnosis. Radiological imaging plays a significant role in early detection. These cysts mostly impact the liver and lungs but may manifest in other areas of the body, presenting distinct diagnostic difficulties. This case example emphasizes the need for using radiological imaging and maintaining a high level of suspicion when it comes to identifying hydatid cysts in young patients. We present an exceptional case of a three-year-old child in g

INTRODUCTION: Teratomas, tumors derived from all 3 fetal germ cell layers, are rarely located in the head and neck region and extremely rare in the Eustachian tube area.
CASE REPORT: The authors present the case of a 2 years old child with chronic ear discharge. Referral diagnosis was tumor or cyst of the temporal bone. Intraoperatively, a solid, hairy tumor located inside the Eustachain tube, with extension into the middle ear space was discovered and removed. Histology revealed a mature teratoma. Review of the literature showed reports of rare similar cases of Eustachian tube teratomas, dif

Oral cancer in children is rare. Diagnosis may be delayed as a result of confusion with reactive lesions. Furthermore, cancer staging, with or without bony invasion, can be complicated during tooth eruption. Literature on pediatric oral cancers is lacking, making determination of the possible etiopathology difficult. We describe an exceptional case of a 5-year-old male child who presented with anterior maxillary gingival pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia that progressed to carcinoma cuniculatum with invasive oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Because of the interesting timing of events, we h

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) usually affect women in their fertile years and, therefore, have implications for their fertility and pregnancy. The presence of IBD during pregnancy has been shown to adversely affect pregnancy outcomes, and increased rates of preterm delivery and of spontaneous abortion have been reported. An onset of acute severe colitis in pregnancy has rarely been seen. We present the case of a 42-year-old woman who conceived after 9 attempts of in vitro fertilization and whose pregnancy was the result of a donated oocyte. Shortly after conception, she was diagnosed with

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection, also known as chickenpox, is a common childhood affliction. Generalized small itchy single-standing vesicles on erythematous skin are typical. Both cutaneous and systemic complications of the VZV infection may commonly occur. A three-year-old girl with a previous history of mild atopic dermatitis presented in our Pediatric Dermatology Clinic in poor general condition, with a skin rash predominantly consisting of generalized large blisters with hypopyon sign and erosions. On a closer look, scattered erythematous papules and vesicles were also visible. A p

Hyponatremia is defined as a plasma sodium concentration less than 135 or 130 mEq/L (or mmol/L) and may be responsible for life threatening symptoms that can be observed in a variety of medical conditions. Cases of fatal hyponatremia have been reported in both clinical and forensic literature in situations of water intoxication due to psychogenic polydipsia, amphetamine derivative drug intake, high-endurance exercise, iatrogenic causes, and exceptional cases of child abuse by forced water intoxication. Vitreous sodium levels have been determined to be relatively stable during the early postmor

Infective endocarditis is rare in children, it is rarer after a surgical treatment of atrioventricular canal, and it is exceptional that Candida albicans is the etiologic agent. This is a serious infection found in congenital heart disease with or without surgery. It is potentially lethal, despite diagnostic and therapeutic advances. We report a case of infective endocarditis due to C. albicans after the treatment of a congenital systemic atrioventricular canal in a child with trisomy 21. The diagnosis was suspected on clinical manifestations and cardiac auscultation. Confirmation was provided

Children of asylum seekers are at risk for psychosocial problems because of their flight history and exceptional living circumstances. This study aims to assess the association of sociodemographic factors and asylum procedural factors with psychosocial problems of asylum seekers' children, and differences herein by informant (parents, teachers, and children). To this end, we obtained data on psychosocial problems among a random sample of 267 children aged 4 to 16, living in Dutch asylum seekers' centers, using the multi-informant Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire. The results show that t

A case of atresia of the left coronary ostium revealed by neonatal heart failure is reported. The initial diagnosis was anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. At surgery performed in this 6-week old infant the diagnosis was amended and the malformation was repaired. Soon after the operation the child rapidly developed hypertrophic "myocardiopathy" of the left ventricle. Seven and a half months later, he is asymptomatic and the echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular systolic function are gradually returning to normality. Atresia of the left coronary os

97 cases of typhoïd fever in child are reported. This disease remains frequent and even severe in tropical zone where its evolution is of endemoepidemic type. Established fever, in spite of an appropriate treatment, is one of the main features of this disease. A certain number of clinical signs call for it; although classical, some others are less significant. Complications are frequent, without any correlation between the date of hospitalizing and the beginning of the disease. They are sometimes severe but mortality rate during hospitalization is quite low. Leukoneutropenia and thrombopenia a
