Bullying victimisation and perpetration of foster and kinship youth in the USA.

BACKGROUND: Childhood bullying can result in serious injury. Our objective was to compare bullying victimisation and perpetration of school-aged youth from 2018 to 2022 in different households: foster care, kinship care and birth families. A second objective examined correlations between bullying and adverse childhood experiences, child gender, age and race while stratifying by household type. METHODS: The 2018-2022 samples of the National Surveys of Children's Health were used. Bullying victimisation and perpetration were reported by caregivers and ranged from none, yearly, monthly to weekly

Child abuse and neglect in institutional settings, cumulative lifetime traumatization, and psychopathological long-term correlates in adult survivors: The Vienna Institutional Abuse Study.

Child maltreatment (CM) in foster care settings (i.e., institutional abuse, IA) is known to have negative effects on adult survivor's mental health. This study examines and compares the extent of CM (physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; physical and emotional neglect) and lifetime traumatization with regard to current adult mental health in a group of survivors of IA and a comparison group from the community. Participants in the foster care group (n = 220) were adult survivors of IA in Viennese foster care institutions, the comparison group (n = 234) consisted of persons from the Viennese po

Foster Care and Health in Medicaid-Enrolled Children Experiencing Parental Opioid Use Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: The burden of the US opioid crisis has fallen heavily on children, a vulnerable population increasingly exposed to parental opioid use disorder (POUD) in utero or during childhood. A paucity of studies have investigated foster care involvement among those experiencing parental opioid use during childhood and the associated health and health care outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the health and health care outcomes of children experiencing POUD with and without foster care involvement. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based cohort study used nationwide Medicaid cla

Image, measure, figure: a critical discourse analysis of nursing practices that develop children.

Motivated by discourses that link early child development and health, nurses engage in seemingly benign surveillance of children. These practices are based on knowledge claims and technologies of developmental science, which remain anchored in assumptions of the child body as an incomplete form with a universal developmental trajectory and inherent potentiality. This paper engages in a critical discursive analysis, drawing on Donna Haraway's conceptualizations of technoscience and figuration. Using a contemporary developmental screening tool from nursing practice, this analysis traces the effe

The impact of childhood trauma, congregate care placement, and social support on foster youth depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Foster youth placed in congregate care often report more risk and fewer protective factors for mental health compared to foster youth residing in other settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address a gap in the literature by examining how childhood trauma and perceived social support are associated with depressive symptoms among youth with histories of residential care or group home placement. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Secondary analysis was employed using data from the "Voyages" study. Foster youth (N = 404) completed a battery of surveys including demographics, placement hist

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in foster care adolescent populations.

BACKGROUND: Children in foster care and institutional settings experience disproportionately high rates of mental health disorders, yet large-scale data on psychiatric comorbidities in this population remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence and patterns of psychiatric diagnoses within one year of placement in foster care or institutional care, with attention to demographic disparities and comorbidity burden. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used de-identified electronic health record data from the TriNetX network, identifying U.S. children placed in foster or institution

The blind men and the elephant: Identification of a latent maltreatment construct for youth in foster care.

Child maltreatment is a major public health concern due to its impact on developmental trajectories and consequences across mental and physical health outcomes. Operationalization of child maltreatment has been complicated, as research has used simple dichotomous counts to identification of latent class profiles. This study examines a latent measurement model assessed within foster youth inclusive of indicators of maltreatment chronicity and severity across four maltreatment types: physical, sexual, and psychological abuse, and neglect. Participants were 500 foster youth with a mean age of 12.

The case of an abused child exposed to the direct danger of serious damage to health in the form of a permanent mental illness.

Prolonged exposure to violence in any form takes a toll on children's health. It may increase the risk of multiple mental disorders appearing in adult life. Such disorders may be of severe intensity, and in extreme cases, they can even disable normal functioning both individually and socially. The present case concerns an eight-year-old girl subjected to all forms of abuse (sexual, physical, psychological and negligence) in her biological family. The foster parents made a notification of a suspected criminal offence based on their multiple observations of behavioral disorders of the child. Aft

Factors associated with caregiver stability in permanent placements: a classification tree approach.

OBJECTIVE: Identify individual and environmental variables associated with caregiver stability and instability for children in diverse permanent placement types (i.e., reunification, adoption, and long-term foster care/guardianship with relatives or non-relatives), following 5 or more months in out-of-home care prior to age 4 due to substantiated maltreatment. METHODS: Participants were 285 children from the Southwestern site of Longitudinal Studies of Child Abuse and Neglect (LONGSCAN). Caregiver instability was defined as a change in primary caregiver between ages 6 and 8 years. Classificat

Potentially traumatic events in foster youth, and association with DSM-5 trauma- and stressor related symptoms.

BACKGROUND: In DSM 5, three disorders are related to trauma and/or maltreatment: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder (DSED) but how these disorders relate to each other and to traumatic events is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We examined 1. Prevalence of Potentially Traumatic Events (PTEs) and poly-victimization for youths in foster care. 2. Associations between single/multiple PTEs and PTSD, DSED, and the two symptom-clusters that constitute RAD: Failure to seek/accept comfort (RAD A), and Low social-emotional responsive

Rapid Growth Of Antipsychotic Prescriptions For Children Who Are Publicly Insured Has Ceased, But Concerns Remain.

The rapid growth of antipsychotic medication use among publicly insured children in the early and mid-2000s spurred new state efforts to monitor and improve prescription behavior. A starting point for many oversight initiatives was the foster care system, where most of the children are insured publicly through Medicaid. To understand the context and the effects of these initiatives, we analyzed patterns and trends in antipsychotic treatment of Medicaid-insured children in foster care and those in Medicaid but not in foster care. We found that the trend of rapidly increasing use of antipsychoti

Youth who remain in care: Exploring factors influencing participation in extended foster care.

BACKGROUND: Young adults aging out of foster care face a higher risk for negative adult outcomes, including homelessness, substance abuse, mental health issues, lower levels of education and employment, and financial instability, all of which affect their transition to adulthood. Extended foster care provides ongoing support to these young adults, yet participation remains low. OBJECTIVE: This study explores associated factors, both demographic and foster care-related, of extended foster care participation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study sample included 45,292 young adults in the United

Investigating the impact of Out-of-Home Care on early childhood development.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood development is influential for life course capability. Children exposed to child maltreatment and at high risk of harm may be removed for their safety, but the effect on child development is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: To assess developmental vulnerability at school commencement across five developmental domains to ascertain whether removal of children with substantiated maltreatment to foster/kinship care is likely protective, or not, of developmental vulnerabilities. METHODS: The study drew on linked-data for a South Australian population birth cohort (2003 to 2014)

"I definitely want grandbabies": Caregivers of adolescents with perinatally-acquired HIV reflect on dating and childbearing.

INTRODUCTION: Parents and caregivers of typically developing teens are often a source of information about sexual health and relationships. However, little is known about the information offered to adolescents with perinatally acquired HIV (APHIV) by caregivers who may provide support and guidance to their teen as they explore sexuality and childbearing. METHOD: This qualitative exploratory study involved the in-depth interviews of 18 caregivers (17 females), including biological mothers (9), relatives (5), and adoptive/foster mothers (4), who care for APHIV. Interviews explored views regardi

"Strap up:" Sexual socialization and safer sex practices among African American youth in foster care.

Adolescent sexual health is often reflected through a problem-oriented lens. This serves to reinforce prevailing sexual scripts and cultural images of disenfranchised youth. Very little is known about the support young people in foster care, particularly youth of color, need to stay sexually healthy and safe. This article presents data on the sources and types of sexual socialization experiences that supported African American transitional age youth in foster care to protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The Role of Integrated Care in a Medical Home for Patients With a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is an umbrella term used to describe preventable birth defects and intellectual and/or developmental disabilities resulting from prenatal alcohol exposure. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a previous clinical report in which diagnostic criteria for a child with an FASD are discussed and tools to assist pediatricians with its management can be found. This clinical report is intended to foster pediatrician awareness of approaches for screening for prenatal alcohol exposure in clinical practice, to guide management of a child with an FASD after the dia
