Risperidone for controlling aggressive behavior in a mentally retarded child: a case report.

Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic agent with dopamine and serotonin antagonistic effects. It is an effective treatment for reducing aggressive behavior in adults with mental retardation. The use of risperidone in a severely mental retarded child with aggression is described. Risperidone was able to reduce the aggressive behavior in this patient. No serious side effect was found. This case illustrated that risperidone is effective and well tolerated in treating aggressive behavior in children with severe mental retardation. However, the anti-aggressive effect of risperidone in mentally r

Self-injurious behavior associated with clonidine withdrawal in a child with Tourette's disorder.

A 7-year-old boy with Tourette's disorder, atypical pervasive developmental disorder, borderline mental retardation, and a history of self-injurious behavior was treated for 21 months with clonidine transdermal patches at doses ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 mg weekly. When withdrawn from clonidine over 4 weeks to assess the need for continued therapy, the patient developed multiple self-destructive behaviors involving the theme of suffocation. The importance of careful clinical monitoring of the behavior of patients undergoing withdrawal from prolonged treatment with high doses of clonidine is empha

Exposure to partner violence and child behavior problems: a prospective study controlling for child physical abuse and neglect, child cognitive ability, socioeconomic status, and life stress.

Previous research suggests an association between partner violence and child behavior problems. However, methodological shortcomings have precluded the formation of directional conclusions. These limitations include failure to control for the effects of child physical abuse and general life stress, employment of nonrepresentative samples from battered women's shelters, and reliance on a single contemporaneous reporter, usually the mother, for information on both independent and dependent measures. This study used prospective, longitudinal data (N = 155) and multiple informants to examine the r

Childhood sun safety at different ages: relations between parental sun protection behavior towards their child and children's own sun protection behavior.

BACKGROUND: Sunburns during childhood are strongly associated with development of melanoma in later life. While parents play an important role in children's sun protection, insight in possible shifts in behavioral responsibility from parents towards their children and the possible effect of children's sex is important for targeting sun safety interventions throughout childhood and adolescence. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey study was conducted among a representative sample of Dutch parents (N = 1053) of children aged between 4 and 13 years old. Questionnaires measured both parental and

Sex and age as moderators in the expression of internalizing and externalizing behaviors: insights from the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL).

BACKGROUND: Children referred for anxiety disorders frequently show both internalizing and externalizing problems, but the role of sex and age in shaping these behavioral expressions remains unclear. Prior research suggests sex differences may shift across development, yet findings have been inconsistent. METHODS: We analyzed data from 600 children (ages 6-17; 53.2% male) referred to a pediatric anxiety specialty clinic in the Northeastern United States between 2013 and 2021. Parents completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL/6-18). Ordinary least squares regression models with an interacti

Disruptive Behaviors across Different Disorders: Evaluation of a Clinical Sample Using the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory.

OBJECTIVE: The study reports the prevalence of disruptive behaviors in a help-seeking sample of young children across a diverse range of clinical diagnoses (based on ICD-10). METHOD: The Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI), a parent rating scale of disruptive behaviors, was completed on 310 children (2-11 years) at three child and adolescent psychiatry clinics in three German states (Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony); the majority of children were outpatients. RESULTS: Mean intensity scores of disruptive behaviors differed significantly by diagnostic group, with the lowest ratings within a co

Comparative Evaluation of Child Behavior Checklist-Derived Scales in Children Clinically Referred for Emotional and Behavioral Dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: We recently developed the Child Behavior Checklist-Mania Scale (CBCL-MS), a novel and short instrument for the assessment of mania-like symptoms in children and adolescents derived from the CBCL item pool and have demonstrated its construct validity and temporal stability in a longitudinal general population sample. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the construct validity of the 19-item CBCL-MS in a clinical sample and to compare its discriminatory ability to that of the 40-item CBCL-dysregulation profile (CBCL-DP) and the 34-item CBCL-Externalizing Scale. METHODS:

Perceived Child Vulnerability and Protective Behavior by Parents of Children with Chronic Kidney Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in childhood not only impacts the child itself, but may also result in higher stress and anxiety in parents. This study aims to assess whether these parents perceive their child as more vulnerable and use more protective parenting behavior, compared to parents of healthy children. Additionally, it explores the associations of perceived child vulnerability (PCV) and overprotection (OP) with parenting stress and anxiety, and various clinical and sociodemographic variables. METHODS: Both parent groups completed a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Child

Cross-informant agreement between caregivers and teachers for prosocial behavior across child welfare settings.

Healthy social functioning has been a growing focus for understanding children's positive development and well-being. Despite the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of behavior rating scales, there has been a rising issue of concern in both practice and research applications regarding rating scales and its low cross-informant agreement. The present study aimed to analyze the extent to which caregivers and teachers agree about children's prosocial behaviors, identify whether there were differences in the degree of agreement across child welfare settings, and ultimately offer recommendations for

Behavior modification of aggressive children in child welfare: evaluation of a combined intervention program.

Children and adolescents with aggressive disorders are prevalent in child welfare settings. Therefore, the assumption is that child welfare services would benefit from a cognitive-behavioral intervention. This study investigates whether implementation of the training with aggressive children (TAC) could improve the outcome of child welfare. Twelve children (average age 10 years), diagnosed with an oppositional defiant disorder or a conduct disorder, are treated either with a child welfare program or with a combined intervention of child welfare program and TAC. Before and immediately after com

A prospective study of child maltreatment and self-injurious behavior in a community sample.

In conjunction with prospective ratings of child maltreatment (i.e., sexual abuse, physical abuse, and physical neglect) and measures of dissociation and somatization, this study examined prospective pathways between child maltreatment and nonsuicidal, direct self-injurious behavior (SIB; e.g., cutting, burning, self-hitting). Ongoing participants in the Minnesota Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (N = 164; 83 males, 81 females) completed a semistructured interview about SIB when they were 26 years old. SIB emerged as a heterogeneous and prominent phenomenon in this low-income, mixed-

Attachment and behavior problems in middle childhood as reported by adult and child informants.

The predictive relation between attachment and mother, teacher, and self-reported psychopathology was examined for a diverse socioeconomic status French Canadian sample of 96 children. Attachment classifications were assigned on the basis of reunion behavior with mother when the children were approximately 6 years old, and child problem behavior was assessed 2 years later using the Child Behavior Checklist (mother report), the Social Behavior Questionaire (teacher report), and the Dominic Questionnaire (child self-report). Results indicated that both insecure/ambivalent and insecure/controllin

Effects of deviant child behavior on parental distress and alcohol consumption in laboratory interactions.

Levels of adult distress and ad lib alcohol consumption following interactions with child confederates were investigated in parents of children with no diagnosable psychiatric disorders. Sixty parents (20 married couples and 20 single mothers) interacted with boys trained to enact behaviors characteristic of either normal children or "deviant" children with externalizing behavior disorders--attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). Relative to the normal child role, interactions with deviant confederates were rated as signi

Temperamental origins of child and adolescent behavior problems: from age three to age fifteen.

We assessed relations between early temperament and behavior problems across 12 years in an unselected sample of over 800 children. Temperament measures were drawn from behavior ratings made by examiners who observed children at ages 3, 5, 7, and 9. Factor analyses revealed 3 dimensions at each age: Lack of Control, Approach, and Sluggishness. Temperament dimensions at ages 3 and 5 were correlated in theoretically coherent ways with behavior problems that were independently evaluated by parents and teachers at ages 9 and 11, and by parents at ages 13 and 15. Lack of Control was more strongly a

Prenatal heat and air pollution exposure alter progesterone and child behavior: A longitudinal study.

Prenatal heat exposure may be linked to childhood behavioral difficulties, but the underlying endocrine mechanisms and moderating effects of air pollution remain poorly understood. This study examined potential interactions between prenatal heat and air pollution in relation to child behavior through alterations in progesterone levels. Data from a birth cohort (Stress in Pregnancy Study, 2009-2014) included 256 children with predominantly racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, recruited from two New York City prenatal clinics. Heat exposure was determined by trimester-specific exposure to summer

Child Sexual Abuse Material Users on the Darknet: Psychiatric Morbidities Related to Offence Behavior.

Individuals engaging in child sexual abuse often present pedophilic interest, but the other psychiatric morbidities among undetected users of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) are largely unknown. We mapped the psychiatric profile of 160 mainly male and primarily non-convicted anonymous Darknet-recruited adult CSAM users. The participants' psychiatric morbidities were analyzed descriptively, and correlations between sexual pathologies known as risk factors for committing child sexual abuse (paraphilias, hypersexuality) and CSAM offense behavior (viewing time, content) were examined in a serie

Paternal Incarceration and Adolescent Delinquency: Role of Father Engagement and Early Child Behavior Problems.

Paternal incarceration is an important predictor of teen delinquency, but the factors that may explain this relationship-such as early child problem behaviors and level of father engagement-have not been adequately explored. The current longitudinal study examined paternal history of incarceration as a predictor of teen self-reported delinquency over a 15-year gap, considering early child problem behaviors and father engagement as mediators. Sex differences in these relationships were also evaluated. This four-wave longitudinal study included an analytic sample of 4897 teens who participated i

Disruptive child behavior severity and parenting program session attendance: Individual participant data meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We tested if baseline disruptive child behavior problem severity predicts parental attendance at sessions of a parenting group program. METHOD: We used a database of randomized trials of the Incredible Years parenting program in Europe and restricted the sample to participants randomized to the intervention arm. Using baseline Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory scores, we distinguished between trial-level problem severity and child-level problem severity, compared linear and quadratic functional forms at both levels, and considered cross-level interactions, all in a multilevel Poisson

Prospective Association of Parenting Stress with Later Child Behavior Problems in Early Childhood Autism.

PURPOSE: Autistic children are reported to display higher levels of externalizing and internalizing behaviors than neurotypical children, and their parents report more stress than parents of neurotypical children. It is unclear whether child behavior difficulties contribute to increased parenting stress, whether parenting stress contributes to child behavior difficulties, or whether the relationship may be bidirectional. METHODS: We investigated prospective bidirectional associations between parenting stress and child externalizing and internalizing behaviors when autistic children were aged

Children with sexual behavior problems: Ties to child maltreatment, family functioning, and help-seeking.

Although the literature on children's sexual behavior problems (SBPs) has indicated that maltreatment and family dysfunction are linked to SBPs, several facets of these factors have remained unexamined. Prior research has largely focused on SBPs more broadly, though interpersonal SBPs (ISBPs) are likely a distinct, more severe SBP subtype. The aim of the current study was to examine potentially relevant, unexplored factors, including the number of types of and total allegations of maltreatment as well as familial characteristics (i.e., parenting attitudes and behaviors, discipline methods, fam
