The developmental course of illicit substance use from age 12 to 22: links with depressive, anxiety, and behavior disorders at age 18.

BACKGROUND: Previous theory and research suggest links between substance use and externalizing behavior problems, but links between substance use and internalizing problems are less clear. The present study sought to understand concurrent links among diagnoses of substance use disorders, internalizing disorders, and behavior disorders at age 18 as well as developmental trajectories of illicit substance use prior to and after this point. METHODS: Using data from 585 participants in the Child Development Project, this study examined comorbidity among substance use, behavior, and internalizing d

Contribution of family violence to the intergenerational transmission of externalizing behavior.

Research finds that early antisocial behavior is a risk for later intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and victimization, and that children's exposure to their parents' IPV is a risk for subsequent behavior problems. This study tests whether intimate violence (IPV) between partners contributes independently to the intergenerational transmission of antisocial behavior, using the Children in the Community Study, a representative sample (N = 821) followed for over 25 years in 6 assessments. The present study includes a subsample of parents (N = 678) and their offspring (N = 396). We test

Does Parental Mental Health Moderate the Association between Parenting Stress and Child Externalizing Behaviors Among Autistic Children?

Parents of autistic children experience significant parenting stress, which is prospectively associated with increases in child externalizing behaviors. However, family factors that place specific families at risk for experiencing the negative impacts of parenting stress on child externalizing behaviors have not been identified. The present study examined whether parental mental health moderates the association between parenting stress and child externalizing behaviors. Parents of 501 autistic children (Mage=5.16yrs) completed the Parenting Stress Index and Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory. Par

Pediatric feeding disorders.

Pediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children. Consequences of feeding disorders can be severe, including growth failure, susceptibility to chronic illness, and even death. Feeding disorders occur in children who are healthy, who have gastrointestinal disorders, and in those with special needs. Most feeding disorders have underlying organic causes. However, overwhelming evidence indicates that abnormal feeding patterns are not solely due to organic impairment.

Multiple Family Groups to reduce child disruptive behavior difficulties: moderating effects of child welfare status on child outcomes.

Children who remain at home with their permanent caregivers following a child welfare (CW) involvement (e.g., investigation, out-of-home placement) manifest high rates of behavioral difficulties, which is a risk factor for further maltreatment and out-of-home placement if not treated effectively. A recently tested Multiple Family Group (MFG) service delivery model to treat youth Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) has demonstrated effectiveness in improving child behavior difficulties among hard-to-engage, socioeconomically disadvantaged families by addressing parenting skills, parent-child r

Intimate Partner Violence and Child Behavioral Problems in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Research in high-income countries has repeatedly demonstrated that intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by women negatively affects the health and behavior of children in their care. However, there is little research on the topic in lower- and middle-income countries. The population-based Asenze Study gathered data on children and their caregivers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This data analysis explores the association of caregiver IPV on child behavior outcomes in children <12 years old and is the first such study in Africa. METHODS: This population-based study was set

Multidimensional scaling of pediatric sleep breathing problems and bio-behavioral correlates.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Complex relationships exist between pediatric sleep disorders and daytime behavior. Using a multidimensional scaling model, we investigated these relationships in 126 children with sleep breathing disorders (SBD). METHOD: Validated questionnaires on nighttime behavior, daytime behavior, and respiratory health were administered to a large number of school children in Belgium. Children who met the criterion of having at least one sleep-related breathing problem (three or more times per week during the past six months) were selected for further analyses. A total of 26 indicator

Families and the origins of child behavior problems.

This article reviews recent research into the relationship between family variables and child behavior. Although a diversity of factors may be associated with the development and maintenance of conduct/oppositional disorders in children, of primary importance are the moment-to-moment interactions that the child has with his or her primary caregivers. These are often marked by coercive, aggressive behaviors that may be functional for parents and children within the family system. However, the likelihood that parents will engage in coercive interactions with the child is also related to the latt

Prenatal bisphenol A exposure and maternally reported behavior in boys and girls.

Prenatal exposure to gonadal hormones plays a major role in the normal development of the male and female brain and sexually dimorphic behaviors. Hormone-dependent differences in brain structure and function suggest that exposure to exogenous endocrine disrupting chemicals may be associated with sex-specific alterations in behavior. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an environmental chemical that has been shown to alter estrogen, androgen, and thyroid hormone signaling pathways. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest associations between prenatal exposure to BPA and child behavior, however data a

Psychoeducation focused on family accommodation: a practical intervention for parents of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that is frequently diagnosed in children and adolescents. In pediatric OCD, family plays an important role in the development and maintenance of the disease. In this relationship, both genetic and behavioral factors, such as parental modeling and family accommodation, are significant. Parental modeling concerns the daily enactment of dysfunctional behavioral patterns by a parent with OCD, which may influence children. Family accommodation, in contrast, describes the direct participation of parents in their child's compulsive ri

Measurement bias in caregiver-report of early childhood behavior problems across demographic factors in an ECHO-wide diverse sample.

BACKGROUND: Research and clinical practice rely heavily on caregiver-report measures, such as the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 (CBCL/1.5-5), to gather information about early childhood behavior problems and to screen for child psychopathology. While studies have shown that demographic variables influence caregiver ratings of behavior problems, the extent to which the CBCL/1.5-5 functions equivalently at the item level across diverse samples is unknown. METHODS: Item-level data of CBCL/1.5-5 from a large sample of young children (N = 9087) were drawn from 26 cohorts in the Environmental infl

Associations among child maltreatment, non-suicidal self-injury and internet addiction in adolescents: Longitudinal mediation of symptoms of complex posttraumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUNDS: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and internet addiction are behavioral problems influenced by environmental factors, with child maltreatment emerging as an important risk factor. Complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is closely associated with child maltreatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations among child maltreatment, NSSI and internet addiction, focusing on the mediating role of CPTSD symptoms. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study collected three-wave data from 454 Chinese adolescents with a six-month interval. Child maltreatment wa

Maternal immune and affiliative biomarkers and sensitive parenting mediate the effects of chronic early trauma on child anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Chronic early trauma alters children's stress reactivity and increases the prevalence of anxiety disorders; yet the neuroendocrine and immune mechanisms underpinning this effect are not fully clear. Animal studies indicate that the mother's physiology and behavior mediate offspring stress in a system-specific manner, but few studies tested this external-regulatory maternal role in human children exposed to chronic stress. METHODS: We followed a unique cohort of children exposed to continuous wartime trauma (N = 177; exposed; N = 101, controls; N = 76). At 10 years, maternal and ch

The association between mothers' psychopathology, childrens' competences and psychological well-being in obese children.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of childhood obesity is rapidly increasing, and many obese children suffer from emotional and behavior problems and mental disorders. Associations with social stigmatization of obesity, maternal psychopathology, socioeconomic status (SES) and resilience factors are discussed. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesize maternal psychopathology to have an impact on the psychological well-being of an obese child. We further hypothesize that competence factors within the child are important key factors that influence the way a child deals with the psychological burden of obesity. METHO

Randomized controlled trial of Functional Family Therapy for offending and antisocial behavior in UK youth.

BACKGROUND: Youth offending and antisocial behavior (ASB) are associated with low quality mental health and relationships and usually lead to poor adult functioning; they are very costly for society. Family interventions are effective in children but there are few reliably effective and inexpensive interventions for adolescents. Functional Family Therapy (FFT) is an evidence-based intervention but seldom tested outside the United States. METHODS: One hundred and eleven adolescents (10-17 years of age, M = 15.0, SD = 1.63) and their families were randomized to FFT + Management As Usual (MAU) (

Effects of adverse childhood experiences on behavior in adolescence: Insights from brain imaging and genetic risk.

Adolescence is a critical developmental stage, and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important environmental factors influencing behavior. However, the relationship between ACEs, individual behavior, brain mechanisms, and the role of genetic risk remains underexplored. In this study, data from 9796 youths aged 9-13 years in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study were analyzed, including 67 ACE-related variables and 30 behavioral outcomes. Using sparse canonical correlation analysis, we identified two distinct patterns: a parental mental health-child psychopathology, lin
