ADHD Follow-Up in Adulthood among Subjects Treated for the Disorder in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service from 1995 to 2015.

Background and Objectives: ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity and can persist in adulthood. The aim of this study is to deepen knowledge about adult ADHD follow-up. Materials and Methods: This observational study consists of one retrospective part aimed at collecting records of children and adolescents treated for ADHD in the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) from 1995 to 2015 and, successively, at identifying their adult follow-up in Adult Mental Health Service (AMHS); the second part consists of ADHD scale admi

Protocol for a randomized controlled trial comparing the Circle of Security-parenting (COS-P) with treatment as usual in child mental health services.

BACKGROUND: The quality of a child's attachment to its primary caregiver plays an important role for its long-term socioemotional development. While 'secure' attachment is associated with better outcomes, 'insecure' attachment is associated with a higher risk of externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Children referred to mental health services show much higher rates of insecure attachment than the general population, yet the parent-child relationship is rarely in treatment focus. Attachment quality is closely associated with parental sensitive responsiveness that is target of attachment-bas

Scaling-up Child and Youth Mental Health Services: Assessing Coverage of a County-Wide Prevention and Early Intervention Initiative During One Fiscal Year.

PURPOSE: In the U.S., the percentage of youth in need of evidence-based mental health practices (EBPs) who receive them (i.e., coverage rate) is low. We know little about what influences coverage rates. In 2010, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (LACDMH) launched a reimbursement-driven implementation of multiple EBPs in youth mental health care. This study examines two questions: (1) What was the coverage rate of EBPs delivered three years following initial implementation? (2) What factors are associated with the coverage rates? METHODS: To assess coverage rates of publicly i

Referrals for suicidality to a UK child and adolescent mental health service: an evaluation of the policy and practice context of response to suicidal young people.

AIMS AND METHOD: We reviewed referrals mentioning suicidality to a Scottish CAMHS. The referrals were from January to June 2019 and 2022. We recorded the referral reason and outcome and compared these to the National CAMHS Service Specification (2020). RESULTS: Of 2,753 referrals, 560 (20.34%) mentioned suicidality. Of these, 82.4% were accepted. The majority of those rejected were from outside the region, already in the CAMHS, or provided insufficient information. The majority did not include any risk assessment (43.6%) or safety planning (67.7%). We identified lack of clarity in the Nationa

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presentations among referrals to a child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) inpatient unit in Ireland.

This retrospective chart review aimed to identify the intersection between young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)'s needs and CAMHS inpatient service needs. A retrospective chart review was conducted on all referrals to a CAMHS inpatient unit over three years (n = 352). Referrals which specified a formal diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of ASD were identified (n = 111), and basic demographic data were collected. Young people with either a formal or suspected diagnosis of ASD referred to the unit presented with a wide range of co-occurring conditions. Of these young people, 30 were ad

What are practitioners' views of how digital health interventions may play a role in online child sexual abuse service delivery?

INTRODUCTION: Online child sexual abuse (OCSA) affects considerable numbers of children globally and is associated with a variety of mental health problems. Existing practitioner studies suggest that young people are infrequently asked about online abuse and practitioners have a fragmented understanding of the problems experienced or how they might approach them. There are very few evidence-based interventions that guide clinical assessment or practice. Digital Health Interventions (DHIs) have the potential to be an effective option where children and young people's services are challenged, in

Transitions from child and adolescent to adult mental health services for eating disorders: an in-depth systematic review and development of a transition framework.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs) peak in mid-to-late adolescence and often persist into adulthood. Given their early onset and chronicity, many patients transition from child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to adult mental health services (AMHS) for ongoing, speciality ED care. This transition typically occurs at 18 years of age, when important biological, psychosocial, and vocational changes take place. Thus, smooth and effective transitions are paramount for ensuring service continuity, as well as reducing the risk of ED relapse and premature death. Here, we synthesized evide

A Psychoeducational Workshop for the Parents of Young Voice Hearers: A Preliminary Investigation into Acceptability and Outcomes in an NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.

BACKGROUND: Hearing voices is a common experience in young people and can be associated with distress, self-harm, and an increased risk of attempting suicide. Many parents lack confidence in supporting young people who are distressed by voices. However, there are currently no evidence-based interventions to support the parents of young voice hearers. METHOD: This was an uncontrolled study exploring the preliminary acceptability and outcomes of a psychoeducation workshop for the parents of young people experiencing distressing voices within a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

Maternal and Child Health Care Service Disruptions and Recovery in Mozambique After Cyclone Idai: An Uncontrolled Interrupted Time Series Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change-related extreme weather events have increased in frequency and intensity, threatening people's health, particularly in places with weak health systems. In March 2019, Cyclone Idai devastated Mozambique's central region, causing infrastructure destruction, population displacement, and death. We assessed the impact of Idai on maternal and child health services and recovery in the Sofala and Manica provinces. METHODS: Using monthly district-level routine data from November 2016 to March 2020, we performed an uncontrolled interrupted time series analysis to assess cha

The prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV cascade analysis tool: supporting health managers to improve facility-level service delivery.

BACKGROUND: The objective of the prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (pMTCT) cascade analysis tool is to provide frontline health managers at the facility level with the means to rapidly, independently and quantitatively track patient flows through the pMTCT cascade, and readily identify priority areas for clinic-level improvement interventions. Over a period of six months, five experienced maternal-child health managers and researchers iteratively adapted and tested this systems analysis tool for pMTCT services. They prioritized components of the pMTCT cascade for inclusion, disseminat

Child health nurses' experiences of using the Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model or current standard practice in the Swedish child health services to address psychosocial risk factors in families with young children - A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) is often hidden, and the youngest children are often those most exposed. CM can be prevented through programs that address risk factors, but few primary prevention strategies have been evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the experiences of nurses using the Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model compared to nurses using current standard practice in the Swedish child health services (CHS) to address psychosocial risk factors in the family environment. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Nurses at 27 child health centers in the CHS in the county of Dalarna, Sweden pa

Barriers and facilitators to implementing social prescribing in child and adolescent mental health services: a qualitative analysis using the consolidated framework for implementation research.

INTRODUCTION: Interventions are urgently needed for young people waiting for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in England. Long waits can worsen mental health, increase distress for young people and families, and place additional pressure on already stretched services. Social prescribing, a referral system for connecting individuals with resources in the community via one-to-one support from a link worker, has not been routinely implemented or evaluated for young people on CAMHS waitlists. It remains unclear whether, and under what conditions, social prescribing can be implem

Interactions among poverty, gender, and health systems affect women's participation in services to prevent HIV transmission from mother to child: A causal loop analysis.

Retention in care remains an important issue for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programs according to WHO guidelines, formerly called the "Option B+" approach. The objective of this study was to examine how poverty, gender, and health system factors interact to influence women's participation in PMTCT services. We used qualitative research, literature, and hypothesized variable connections to diagram causes and effects in causal loop models. We found that many factors, including antiretroviral therapy (ART) use, service design and quality, stigma, disclosure, spouse/partner

Access and utilisation of reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health services among women who inject drugs in coastal Kenya: Findings from a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: The Kenyan government has committed to increasing access to comprehensive reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health (RMNCH) services. However, inequalities still exist. Women who inject drugs are an important sub-population for public health interventions, yet their RMNCH needs have largely been overlooked. Additionally, there is a lack of research to inform RMNCH interventions for this sub-population. METHODS: In 2015, we undertook interviews and focus group discussions with 45 women who inject drugs and five key stakeholders to understand these women's RMNCH experience

Associations Between Family Factors and Mental Health Service Use Among Children with Physical Illness: the Mediating Role of Child Psychopathology Trajectories.

This study investigated whether child psychopathology trajectories mediate the association between parent psychological distress/family functioning and mental health service use (MHSU) among children with a chronic physical illness (CPI). Data come from a longitudinal study of 263 children and youth aged 2-16 years diagnosed with a CPI and their parents assessed at baseline, six, 12, and 24 months. Parent psychological distress was measured by creating a composite score from the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scale, and family functioning

Structural and interagency influences on mandated health assessments for children in out-of-home care in Sweden: a qualitative study of child protection services workers.

BACKGROUND: Children in out-of-home care (OOHC) have significantly poorer physical, mental and dental health than their peers. In Sweden, child protection services (CPS) are required to initiate health assessments (HAs) when a child is placed in OOHC. Despite this statutory requirement, fewer than half of eligible children undergo an HA. Factors influencing implementation remain poorly understood. METHODS: This qualitative study explored CPS caseworkers'change experiences of initiating and coordinating HAs for children placed in OOHC in Sweden. Five semi-structured focus group discussions wer
