A good investment: longer-term cost savings of sensitive parenting in childhood.

BACKGROUND: Good quality parenting in early childhood is reliably associated with positive mental and physical health over the lifespan. The hypothesis that early parenting quality has significant long-term financial benefits has not been previously tested. METHODS: Design: Longitudinal study with follow-up from 2012 to 2016. SETTING: UK multicentre study cohort (London, South-East England). PARTICIPANTS: 174 young people drawn from 2 samples, one at moderate risk of poor outcomes and one at high risk, assessed aged 4-6 years then followed up in early adolescence (mean age 12.1 years). MEA

Exploring trust in religious leaders and institutions as a mechanism for improving retention in child malnutrition interventions in the Philippines: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: In the context of persistent child malnutrition in the Philippines, the objective of this study was to examine how different dimensions of trust affected programme retention and physiological outcomes when a faith-based organisation (FBO) addressed moderate and severe acute malnutrition among children from households experiencing extreme poverty. SETTING: We retrospectively analysed survey data collected by International Care Ministries (ICM) in 2012-2013 across 150 communities in eight provinces (Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Bohol, Palawan, Sarangani, South Cotabato, Sulta

High-risk fertility behavior among reproductive age women in extremely high and very high maternal mortality sub-Saharan African countries.

ABSTRACT: High-risk fertility behavior is a leading contributor to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of high-risk fertility behavior among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted a secondary analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data from eight sub-Saharan African countries with extremely high or very high maternal mortality. A weighted sample of 78,353 reproductive-age women who had given birth in the five years preceding the survey was included. A multilevel mixed-effects binary logistic regression model was

Parental Low Education, Low Income, Deprivation and School Refusal Among Japanese Elementary School Students in First Grade: Results From A-CHILD Study.

BACKGROUND: School refusal has negative consequences throughout life. While parental education and child poverty are closely linked to school refusal, the mechanism by which parental low education influences school refusal in offspring remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined the association between parental low education and several dimensions of child poverty (low income and deprivation) with school refusal among first grade (6-7 years old) elementary school students in Japan. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) study co…

Emotional abuse of girls in Swaziland: prevalence, perpetrators, risk and protective factors and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Research on emotional child abuse in sub-Saharan Africa is scarce. Few studies thus far have examined prevalence, risk and protective factors for emotional child abuse or the associations between emotional abuse and girls' health. METHODS: A nationally representative two-stage, cluster-sampled, household survey of females aged 13-24 years (n = 1244) on childhood abuse victimisation was conducted. Participants completed interviewer-assisted questionnaires. Associations between emotional abuse and putative risk, and protective factors and health outcomes were analyzed using separate

Mothering from the margins: lived experiences of incarcerated substance-abusing mothers and the developmental risks faced by their children in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Children of incarcerated substance-abusing mothers represent a profoundly vulnerable yet under-researched population in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Sri Lanka, the intersection of maternal addiction, incarceration and poverty poses complex threats to child health and development. This study explores the lived experiences of such mothers and the perceived risks their children face. METHODS: A qualitative, phenomenological study was conducted using 10 focus group discussions (FGDs) with 48 incarcerated mothers in Sri Lanka's largest female correctional facility. Part

Understanding orphan and non-orphan adolescents' sexual risks in the context of poverty: a qualitative study in Nyanza Province, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Some studies show orphanhood to be associated with increased sexual risk-taking while others have not established this relationship, but have found factors other than orphanhood as predictors of sexual risk behaviours and outcomes among adolescents. This study examines community members' perceptions of how poverty influences adolescent sexual behaviour and outcomes in four districts of Nyanza Province, Kenya. METHODS: Eight study sites within the four districts were randomly selected. Focus group discussions were conducted with a purposive sample of adolescents, parents and caregi

Screening for financial vulnerability in a paediatric hospital setting: a pilot study of the Financial Risk Questionnaire (FRIQuest).

UNLABELLED: Growing up in poverty can significantly influence child health and access to healthcare. Paediatric healthcare providers can play an important role in identifying families experiencing financial vulnerability. However, various barriers prevent standard poverty screening in paediatric care. To support this, we developed a digital financial vulnerability screening questionnaire: the Financial Risk Questionnaire (FRIQuest). This study describes its development and evaluates its implementation, perceived usefulness, acceptability, and user friendliness. This mixed-methods implementatio

Evaluation and Forecasting Analysis of the Association of Conditional Cash Transfer With Child Mortality in Latin America, 2000-2030.

IMPORTANCE: Latin America has implemented the world's largest and most consolidated conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs during the last 2 decades. As a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, poverty rates have markedly increased, and a large number of newly low-income individuals, especially children, have been left unprotected. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of CCT programs with child health in Latin American countries during the last 2 decades and forecast child mortality trends up to 2030 according to CCT alternative implementation options. The gift of freedom? Exploring the realities of rescue from child trafficking in Ghana.

This paper is a critical reflection on the rescue and reintegration regime associated with the child trafficking intervention in Ghana. The paper acknowledges efforts by anti-trafficking NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisations) to address conditions of poverty, child/youth economic exploitation, and human rights abuses. However, it also observes that these interventions have had very little impact for some of the beneficiaries. Drawing on ethnographic research with young adults considered as trafficked victims by a child rights NGO in Ghana, the paper demonstrates how reintegrated young adults ar

Household Food Insecurity and Parent-to-Child Aggression.

Nearly 13 million children in the United States live in households struggling with food insecurity. Although biosocial theories suggest a strong link between the lack of food and child maltreatment, and a handful of studies have established a correlation between nutritional deficits and family violence, it is unclear if household food insecurity itself is associated with physical and psychological child abuse apart from other issues related to poverty. The current study examines this possibility by analyzing data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study ( n = 2,330). Sixteen percent

What are the factors of parental incarceration that may increase risk of poor emotional and mental health in children of prisoners?

PURPOSE: Globally millions of children have a parent who is imprisoned. Research suggests that this has an adverse impact on the child and imprisonment of a parent is considered to be an adverse childhood experience (ACE). Parental incarceration will not only affect the child but the entire household and may result in further ACEs such as household dysfunction and parental separation making this group of children particularly vulnerable. This scoping review aims to adopt an international perspective to comprehensively examine the extent range and nature of literature both published and grey re

The ecological model and the study of child abuse in Nigeria.

Physical abuse and exploitative child labor are two common forms of child abuse in Nigeria. Exploitative child labor exists in both the formal and informal sectors where children work as hairdressers, beggars' assistants, hawkers, and as factory and agricultural workers under conditions characterized by long hours, hazardous environment, and meager remuneration. Research on the incidence of physical abuse in Nigeria is less systematic, and few empirical studies are available. Physical abuse is primarily the result of corporal punishment which has become excessive. Poverty and the existence of

Malnutrition and impaired immune response to infection.

The cycle of events which leads to an impairment of the immune response in the malnourished child includes poverty, food deprivation and frequent infections. It is of great significance, however, that the marked suppression of the immune response can be repaired reasonably promptly, if the disease commences after the child has attained 1 year of age. Prenatal infection not only generates growth retardation but also a higher maternal to foetal IgG ratio, higher IgM in the neonate and a sustained immune depression. Passive cutaneous anaphylaxis measurements in the baboon skin and specific IgE de

Child and adult disability in the 2000 Census: disability is a household affair.

BACKGROUND: Survey data indicate that individuals with disabilities in the United States often experience less advantageous economic and social resources than individuals without disabilities. Furthermore, they often reside with other individuals with disabilities in the same household. However, less is known about resource availability when multiple child and adult household members have a disability. OBJECTIVE: We use child-level data from the 2000 Census to examine the relationship between aggregation of disability in households with children and education, labor force participation, pover

Involving Parents in Prevention: A Case Example of Research and Intervention Development to Improve Financial Well-Being Support.

The adverse effects on parent and child outcomes of poverty and stressors associated with low income are well established. With notable exceptions, however, the potential role of frontline services in improving family financial well-being is underexplored. This article outlines how patient and public involvement (PPI) was initiated early on in research on financial well-being support (FWbS). It illustrates how research can build on and integrate what parents say about services and how to research them. The involvement work was undertaken in one city in part to inform the adaptation of an incom

The push and pull factors: Adverse childhood experiences and their association with homelessness.

BACKGROUND: A widespread global risk for children is homelessness, often caused by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and leading to dire living conditions. Children may be compelled to live and work on the streets because of economic, social and psychological factors. Knowledge of the patterns of ACEs and their association with homelessness remains unknown in South Africa. AIM: The study explores the patterns of ACEs contributing to childhood homelessness in South Africa to identify immediate causes and underlying factors that sustain the issue. METHOD: A qualitative document analysis was

Benefits of genetically modified crops for the poor: household income, nutrition, and health.

The potential impacts of genetically modified (GM) crops on income, poverty and nutrition in developing countries continue to be the subject of public controversy. Here, a review of the evidence is given. As an example of a first-generation GM technology, the effects of insect-resistant Bt cotton are analysed. Bt cotton has already been adopted by millions of small-scale farmers, in India, China, and South Africa among others. On average, farmers benefit from insecticide savings, higher effective yields and sizeable income gains. Insights from India suggest that Bt cotton is employment generat

The association between childhood maltreatment experiences and the onset of maltreatment perpetration in young adulthood controlling for proximal and distal risk factors.

The evidence for association between child maltreatment victimization and later maltreatment perpetration is both scant and mixed. The objective of the present study was to assess the association between childhood maltreatment experiences and later perpetration of maltreatment in young adulthood controlling for proximal young adult functioning, prior youth risk behaviors, and childhood poverty. The study included 6,935 low-income children with (n=4,470) or without (n=2,465) maltreatment reports prior to age 18 followed from ages 1.5 through 11 years through early adulthood (ages 18-26).
