Specific distribution pattern of nerve fibers containing catecholamine-synthesizing enzymes, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and C-terminal flanking peptide of NPY (CPON) in the pineal gland of the chinchilla (Chinchilla laniger)--an immunohistochemical study.

The sympathetic nerve fibers originating from the superior cervical ganglia and supplying the pineal gland play the most important role in the control of the pineal activity in mammals. NPY and CPON are also present in the majority of the pinealopetal sympathetic neurons. In this study, immunohistochemical techniques were used to demonstrate the existence and coexistence of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DbetaH) as well as NPY and CPON in the nerve fibers supplying the chinchilla pineal gland. Ten two-year-old female chinchillas housed in natural light conditions were us

Oviduct morphology and estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ expression in captive Chinchilla lanigera (Hystricomorpha: Chinchillidae).

Chinchilla lanigera is a hystricomorph rodent from South America whose reproductive biology presents particular characteristics that distinguishes it from other Rodentia species, such as low reproductive rate, seasonal breeding pattern, and long estrous cycle. Nevertheless, reproductive features in female chinchillas are still poorly investigated, with a scarce knowledge concerning the estrous cycle and the histology of reproductive organs. In this study, we investigate the morphology, histomorphometry, secretory activity, and immunolocalization of estrogen receptors ERα and ERβ in oviducts of

Dynamic Properties of Tympanic Membrane in a Chinchilla Otitis Media Model Measured With Acoustic Loading.

Otitis media is the most common infectious disease in young children, which results in changes in the thickness and mechanical properties of the tympanic membrane (TM) and induces hearing loss. However, there are no published data for the dynamic properties of the TM in otitis media ears, and it is unclear how the mechanical property changes are related to TM thickness variation. This paper reports a study of the measurement of the dynamic properties of the TM in a chinchilla acute otitis media (AOM) model using acoustic loading and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). AOM was created through trans

Effect of topical glucocorticoid treatment in chinchilla model of lipopolysaccharide induced otitis media with effusion.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of topical treatment with three glucocorticoids in lipopolysaccharide induced otitis media with effusion (OME). METHODS: Chinchillas were divided into seven treatment groups consisting of vehicle and three glucocorticoids: dexamethasone sodium phosphate (DSP), fluticasone propionate (FP), and hydrocortisone, each at concentrations of 0.1% and 1.0%. LPS (300 μg) was injected into the superior bullae of chinchillas to induce OME. Animals were treated with test substances at -2, 24, and 48 h relative to LPS inoculation. After 96 h, chinchillas were euthanized,

Phase-locked responses to tones of chinchilla auditory nerve fibers: implications for apical cochlear mechanics.

Responses to tones with frequency < or = 5 kHz were recorded from auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) of anesthetized chinchillas. With increasing stimulus level, discharge rate-frequency functions shift toward higher and lower frequencies, respectively, for ANFs with characteristic frequencies (CFs) lower and higher than approximately 0.9 kHz. With increasing frequency separation from CF, rate-level functions are less steep and/or saturate at lower rates than at CF, indicating a CF-specific nonlinearity. The strength of phase locking has lower high-frequency cutoffs for CFs >4 kHz than for CFs < 3 k

Delayed mitochondrial dysfunction in apoptotic hair cells in chinchilla cochleae following exposure to impulse noise.

Apoptotic death of hair cells (HCs) in the cochlea has been found following exposure to intense noise. The current study was designed to examine the mitochondrial energetic function of HCs during the course of noise-induced apoptosis. Two aspects of the mitochondrial energetic function, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), were examined in HCs of chinchilla cochleae following exposure to a series of 75 pairs of impulse noises at 155 dB pSPL. The results showed that nuclear condensation and uptake of propidium iodide or trypan blue appeared at 10 mi

F-actin cleavage in apoptotic outer hair cells in chinchilla cochleas exposed to intense noise.

Apoptosis is an active cell death pathway involved in a variety of pathological conditions, including noise-induced outer hair cell (OHC) death. During this process, the cytoskeletal proteins have been found to be either damaged and/or enzymatically disassembled in several cell types, leading to formation of apoptotic manifestations. This study was designed to examine the cleavage of filamentous actin (F-actin), an important cytoskeletal protein, in the cochlear OHCs after noise exposure. Chinchillas were exposed to a 4 kHz narrow band noise at 106 dB SPL for 1 h and cochleas were either colle

Changes in cochlear antioxidant enzyme activity after sound conditioning and noise exposure in the chinchilla.

Exposure to low level noise prior to a high level exposure reduces noise-induced hearing loss in mammals. This phenomenon is known as sound conditioning or 'toughening'. Reactive oxygen intermediates have been implicated in noise-induced cochlear damage. To evaluate if in situ antioxidant processes may play a role in the toughening phenomenon initiated by low level noise exposure we analyzed glutathione reductase, gamma-glutamyl cysteine synthetase, and catalase in stria vascularis and organ of Corti fractions from cochleae of chinchillas exposed to a sound conditioning paradigm. Effects of prestimulatory carbogen inhalation on noise-induced temporary threshold shifts in humans and chinchilla.

Human subjects and chinchilla breathed either Carbogen or compressed air prior to high level sound stimulation. Following stimulation, threshold shifts and recovery to prestimulation thresholds were monitored. Behavioral audiometry was used for human subjects and electrocochleography was utilized to measure noise-induced threshold shifts in the animals. Results were similar for both human and animal subjects in that preinhalation of Carbogen (05 percent 02 and 5 percent CO2) was seen to decrease the amount of temporary threshold shift (TTS) and to increase recovery rate. Further, histologic st

Discharge patterns in the cochlear nucleus of the chinchilla following noise induced asymptotic threshold shift.

Chinchillas were exposed to an 86 dB SPL octave band of noise centered at 4.0 kHz for 3.5--5 days. The noise elevated the hearing thresholds between 4.0 and 16.0 kHz to between 60 and 75 dB SPL. Measurements from single neurons in the cochlear nucleus revealed abnormalities in the response properties of neurons with characteristic frequencies (CF) above 2.0 kHz. Units above 2.0 kHz had elevated thresholds (between 50 and 90 dB SPL) and broad tuning curves due to a greater loss in sensitivity near CF than at lower frequencies. The tuning curve Q10dB values for high frequency neurons were genera

Improvement of Mechanical Stability for Single Unit Recording Based on Skull Cap in Living Chinchilla.

Three-point head fixation was constructed to provide mechanical stability for single unit recording (SUR) on vestibular sensory system in living chinchilla previously. However, it is no more qualified to this work when the stimulation intensity becomes large because of frequent unit losing and neuron damage, which strongly implies that the mechanical stability has been broken during the stimulation. Here, we constructed a novel head fixation (skull cap assistant head fixation) provided by skull cap on the basis of three-point head fixation in order to improve the mechanical stability for SUR u

A natural zoonotic giardiasis: Infection of a child via Giardia cysts in pet chinchilla droppings.

Here, we report a case of direct zoonotic transmission of giardiasis between a pet chinchilla and a human. Microscopic and molecular examinations of stool samples from a child and samples of chinchilla droppings revealed cysts/DNA of Giardia intestinalis. The transmission from the chinchilla to the child has been confirmed as coprophagous after the 1-year-old toddler ingested pet chinchilla droppings. Molecular analysis of the gdh gene from both hosts classified the G. intestinalis cysts into the assemblage B genetic group, which has been previously shown to be characteristic of both human and

Dynamic property changes in stapedial annular ligament associated with acute otitis media in the chinchilla.

Located at the end of the ossicular chain, the stapedial annular ligament (SAL) serves as a closed yet mobile boundary between the cochlear fluid and stapes footplate. It is unclear how SAL properties change with acute otitis media (AOM). This paper reports the measurements of SAL dynamic properties in chinchilla AOM model using dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and frequency-temperature superposition (FTS) principle. AOM was analyzed in two infection groups: 4 days (4D) and 8 days (8D) post induction. SAL specimens were measured using DMA at three temperatures: 5, 25, and 37°C. To extend the

Comparison otitis media due to types 3 and 23 Streptococcus pneumoniae in the Chinchilla model.

Only a few pneumococcal serotypes are responsible for the majority of cases of acute otitis media due to Streptococcus pneumoniae in children. The immunopathogenesis of otitis media cause by two serotypes, type 3 and 23, was studied in chinchillas. Chinchillas with type 23 pneumococcal otitis media were capable of clearing the infection over a six-week period without treatment, whereas the type 3 infection persisted throughout the six-week study. In addition, bacteremia or meningitis occurred more frequently and earlier with type 3 pneumococcal otitis media than with type 23. The resolution of

Differentiating the Physiological Signatures of Cochlear Synaptopathy and Inner Hair Cell Damage in a Chinchilla Model.

Aging and noise over-exposure lead to complex mixtures of cochlear degradation that impair the structure and function of outer hair cells, inner hair cells (IHCs), and the cochlear nerve. However, IHC damage and cochlear synaptopathy (CS) remain pathologies "hidden" from the audiogram. This study aimed to identify and differentiate the physiological signatures of these two distinct pathologies using promising non-invasive assays: Envelope Following Responses (EFRs), Auditory Brainstem Response (ABRs), Wideband middle-ear reflexes (WB-MEMRs), and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs

Tinnitus and inferior colliculus activity in chinchillas related to three distinct patterns of cochlear trauma.

A longstanding hypothesis is that tinnitus, the perception of sound without an external acoustic source, is triggered by a distinctive pattern of cochlear hair cell (HC) damage and that this subsequently leads to altered neural activity in the central auditory pathway. This hypothesis was tested by assessing behavioral evidence of tinnitus and spontaneous neural activity in the inferior colliculus (IC) after unilateral cochlear trauma. Chinchillas were assigned to four cochlear treatment groups. Each treatment produced a distinctive pattern of HC damage, as follows: acoustic exposure (AEx): sp
