The Office of Solid Waste of the US Environmental Protection Agency determines the hazards of wastes produced by the organic chemical manufacturing industry. Based on these determinations, regulations have been laid down for many wastes under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Additional wastes from this industry will be considered for regulation following further study and evaluation. Among the wastes under study are hexachlorobenzene (HCB)-containing wastes. Simple procedures for extraction and chromatographic determination of dimethachlon residues in fresh tobacco leaves and cut-tobacco are described. The determination was carried out by capillary gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD) and confirmed by GC-MS. The mean recoveries and relative standard deviation (RSD) were 93.2%~112.9% and 3.5%~6.7%, respectively at levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 mg/kg. The limit of determination was 0.001 mg/kg. Tobacco samples in routine check were successfully analyzed using the proposed method.

We have designed and synthesized the novel p-type polymer containing thienothiophene, thiophene and fluorene with OTFT characteristics. The polymer was synthesized by the palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction with thienothiophene derivatives, thiophene derivatives and fluorene derivatives. Bulky arylstannanes and bulky aroyl chlorides are good reaction partners for the synthesis of two-, three-, and even four-ortho-substituted benzophenones, in good to excellent isolated yields (47-91%). Three simple and direct routes, with differential advantages, are proposed: (i) a catalyst-free protocol, in o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) at 180 °C; (ii) a room temperature protocol, using AlCl(3) (0.5 equiv), in dichloromethane (DCM); and (iii) a solvent-free, indium-promoted procedure. A radical mechanism is proposed for the indium-mediated reactions.
