When the Algorithm Becomes the Dietitian: Large Language Model Hallucinations, Algorithmic Food Environments, and the Erosion of Nutritional Autonomy.

Large language models (LLMs) can answer dietary questions, but their use as substitutes for registered dietitians remains insufficiently quantified. Evaluations have identified inaccurate nutrient targets, incomplete clinical advice, and insufficient personalization, alongside useful performance on some general nutrition tasks. Social media and food-delivery interfaces may also influence dietary choices through food cues, social endorsement, and choice architecture. This conceptual perspective presents ADRIFT (Algorithmic Dietary Reconfiguration through Informational, Framing, and Technologica

Easier comparison of bets in evaluation does not reduce classical preference reversals: Evidence against a context-dependent explanation.

In preference reversals, subjects express different rankings over a set of alternatives depending on how preferences are elicited. In classical reversal tasks, for instance, subjects often select a safe bet over a risky one when given a choice between the two in a pair, but then assign a higher monetary evaluation to the risky bet. Motivated by a rich literature on context-dependent preferences, we conjecture that comparisons across bets in a pair can influence both Choice and Evaluation. Yet deciders are less likely to mentally compare the bets in the latter case, as bets are typically evalua

Autonomous behaviour and the limits of human volition.

Humans and some other animals can autonomously generate action choices that contribute to solving complex problems. However, experimental investigations of the cognitive bases of human autonomy are challenging, because experimental paradigms typically constrain behaviour using controlled contexts, and elicit behaviour by external triggers. In contrast, autonomy and freedom imply unconstrained behaviour initiated by endogenous triggers. Here we propose a new theoretical construct of adaptive autonomy, meaning the capacity to make behavioural choices that are free from constraints of both immedi

Comment on "Single-trial spike trains in parietal cortex reveal discrete steps during decision-making".

Latimeret al (Reports, 10 July 2015, p. 184) claim that during perceptual decision formation, parietal neurons undergo one-time, discrete steps in firing rate instead of gradual changes that represent the accumulation of evidence. However, that conclusion rests on unsubstantiated assumptions about the time window of evidence accumulation, and their stepping model cannot explain existing data as effectively as evidence-accumulation models.

Choice mechanisms for past, temporally extended outcomes.

Accurate retrospection is critical in many decision scenarios ranging from investment banking to hedonic psychology. A notoriously difficult case is to integrate previously perceived values over the duration of an experience. Failure in retrospective evaluation leads to suboptimal outcome when previous experiences are under consideration for revisit. A biologically plausible mechanism underlying evaluation of temporally extended outcomes is leaky integration of evidence. The leaky integrator favours positive temporal contrasts, in turn leading to undue emphasis on recency. To investigate choic

Students prefer the immediate feedback assessment technique.

Students responded to a questionnaire after completing classroom examinations using either Scantron forms or the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique. Factor analysis of students' responses yielded six scales unrelated to students' grades and not differing by sex, course, or instructor. Students evaluated on the latter technique scored significantly higher on scales measuring ease of understanding and ease of completing response requirements, perceived fairness of and preference for an answer-until-correct procedure, and enhanced involvement in the test-taking process.

Empirically based methods to assess the preferences of individuals with severe disabilities.

A literature review was conducted to provide a synthesis of 18 years of research on preference assessment with individuals who have severe disabilities (e.g., severe mental retardation, autism, multiple disabilities). Through this synthesis, several procedural variables were identified that may influence the outcome of preference assessment, including context, assessment stimuli, selection response, and format. Recommendations were given for designing preference assessment, and questions were raised for future research.

A behavioral timing intervention upregulates striatal serotonergic markers and reduces impulsive action in adult male mice.

Many studies support the hypothesis that time-based interventions reduce impulsive behavior in rodents. However, few studies have directly assessed 1) how such interventions affect impulsive action rather than impulsive choice, 2) if intervention effects differ by sex, and 3) how time-based interventions affect neurochemistry in regions mediating decision-making and reward. Thus, we assessed how a fixed-interval (FI) intervention initiated during late adolescence and extending into adulthood affected dopaminergic and serotonergic analytes in the frontal cortex and striatum and subsequent impul

Preferences for AI-Enabled Health Care Technologies: Systematic Review of Discrete Choice Experiments and Reporting Quality Assessment Using the DIRECT Checklist.

BACKGROUND: AI is increasingly being integrated into health care, making it important to understand stakeholder preferences for AI-enabled technologies. Although discrete choice experiments (DCEs) are widely used to elicit preferences, evidence on preference attributes, willingness to pay (WTP), and reporting quality in AI-related DCEs has not been systematically synthesized. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesize stakeholder preferences for AI-enabled health care technologies elicited through DCEs and assess reporting quality using the DIRECT (DIscrete choice experiment REporti

Do We Always Need a New Preference Study? A Scoping Review of Promising Research Areas for Meta-Analyses and Benefit Transfers of Patient Preference Studies.

OBJECTIVES: Although patient preference (PP) studies are costly, time intensive, and burdensome on patients, their findings are rarely used beyond the purpose of the original study. If PP study findings could be transferred to other contexts through meta-regression (benefit transfers), resources could be better utilized. We conducted a scoping review to assess the readiness of the current PP study landscape for evidence synthesis and benefit transfers. METHODS: Quantitative PP studies examining risks and benefits of treatments were identified through a systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, and

Patient Preferences for Long-Term Implant Care in Cochlear, Glaucoma and Cardiovascular Diseases.

In the process of developing and implementing innovative implant technologies the consideration of patient preferences can be beneficial for patients, doctors and developers. Nevertheless, in existing literature, there is still scarce knowledge of patients' perspectives on long-term implant care. In this study, three discrete choice experiments (DCEs) were conducted in the context of cochlear implants (CI, n = 92), glaucoma implants (GI, n = 21) and cardiovascular implants (CVI, n = 23), examining the relative importance of attributes of long-term implant care from the patients' perspective. Preferences for cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation care: A discrete choice experiment among patients in Lebanon.

OBJECTIVE: Patient preferences are important in designing optimal rehabilitation care. The aim of this study is to assess preferences for rehabilitation care among two groups of respondents. DESIGN: An online discrete choice experiment survey was carried out. SETTING: We use data for Lebanon, a country where rehabilitation care is still underdeveloped. PARTICIPANTS: Patients who have undergone or are currently undergoing rehabilitation treatment (users) and those who have not (yet) used rehabilitation care (non-users). INTERVENTION: Patients were asked to repeatedly choose between two hypo

Observers penalize decision makers whose risk preferences are unaffected by loss-gain framing.

A large interdisciplinary body of research on human judgment and decision making documents systematic deviations between prescriptive decision models (i.e., how individuals should behave) and descriptive decision models (i.e., how individuals actually behave). One canonical example is the loss-gain framing effect on risk preferences: the robust tendency for risk preferences to shift depending on whether outcomes are described as losses or gains. Traditionally, researchers argue that decision makers should always be immune to loss-gain framing effects. We present three preregistered experiments

Pigeons, unlike humans, do not prefer near hits in a slot-machine-like task.

Slot machines are among the most popular forms of commercial gambling, and the high frequency of losses that come close to winning - near hits - in this game appears to contribute to its popularity. In the present experiment we tested if pigeons, similarly to humans, prefer an alternative that provides near-hit outcomes in a slot-machine-like task. The pigeons received series of three stimuli, one every two seconds: if the three stimuli matched, food was delivered (a win); if they did not match, food was not delivered (a loss). We gave pigeons a choice between two options that provided food wi

Response to Comment on "Single-trial spike trains in parietal cortex reveal discrete steps during decision-making".

Shadlen et al's Comment focuses on extrapolations of our results that were not implied or asserted in our Report. They discuss alternate analyses of average firing rates in other tasks, the relationship between neural activity and behavior, and possible extensions of the standard models we examined. Although interesting to contemplate, these points are not germane to the findings of our Report: that stepping dynamics provided a better statistical description of lateral intraparietal area spike trains than diffusion-to-bound dynamics for a majority of neurons.

Effects of heroin on rat prosocial behavior.

Opioid use disorders are characterized in part by impairments in social functioning. Previous research indicates that laboratory rats, which are frequently used as animal models of addiction-related behaviors, are capable of prosocial behavior. For example, under normal conditions, when a 'free' rat is placed in the vicinity of rat trapped in a plastic restrainer, the rat will release or 'rescue' the other rat from confinement. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of heroin on prosocial behavior in rats. For 2 weeks, rats were given the opportunity to rescue their cagemate

The utility of assessing musical preference before implementation of noncontingent music to reduce vocal stereotypy.

We conducted a modified paired-choice preference assessment and used a multielement design to examine the effects of noncontingent access to high- and low-preference music on vocal stereotypy exhibited by children with autism. For 3 of the 4 participants, high-preference music (a) produced lower levels of vocal stereotypy than low-preference music and (b) reduced vocal stereotypy when compared to a no-interaction condition. Results underscore the potential importance of assessing musical preference prior to using noncontingent music to reduce vocal stereotypy.
