Randomized studies of the physiological and clinical consequences of cholecystectomy for uncomplicated gallbladder stones are very scarce. Bile acid malabsorption is increased postoperatively, probably giving rise to diarrhea in a few sensitive individuals. Preexisting abdominal distension and fat intolerance most often persist postoperatively. In adequately selected patients, abdominal pain may subside in 75% or more. The presence of functional bowel disease should always be considered in patients with uncomplicated gallstones.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Significant postoperative bile leaks occur in approximately 1% of patients. The goal of endoscopic therapy is to eliminate the transpapillary pressure gradient, thereby permitting preferential transpapillary bile flow rather than extravasation at the site of leak.
METHODOLOGY: Sixty-four patients were retrospectively evaluated. Endoscopic treatment comprised endoscopic sphincterotomy followed by insertion of a naso-biliary drainage or a stent. Retained stones were extracted by standard procedures.

1389 laparoscopic operations were fulfilled for chronic and acute cholecystitis. In 41 patients (3%) it was necessary to pass on to laparotomy. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of performing cholecystocholangiography through a central venous pressure catheter during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. In 1780 patients the results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LCH) conduction for 1992-1997 period were analysed. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LCE) was performed in 410 patients with calculous cholecystitis. Acute phlegmonous cholecystitis was in 14 patients. The indications for the LCE were similar to the indications for "open" cholecystectomy. The specific features of LCE are analysed. The long-term follow up period was from 3 to 16 months.
