The first-degree consanguineous relatives of 46 patients with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease were examined for the presence of articular chondrocalcinosis. In 5 cases the process was familial, with 17 persons in the oldest living generation (mean age 69 +/- 7.4) showing radiographic evidence of calcified cartilage. The clinical syndrome was characterized by a female predominance, late onset of symptoms with mild arthritic manifestations, and oligoarticular chondrocalcinosis. These data suggest that the familial type of CPPD crystal deposition disease is more

Studying one hundred cases of simple gonarthrosis we found only one supra trochlear femoral erosion (STFE). Such a lesion was discovered in 14 cases among 150 chondrocalcinosis with arthrosic lesions. The cases involving STFE trend to a commun marked chondro-osteolytic evolution. The caracteristic patella sizes show clearly that STFE is not in relation with en anomaly of patella (patella alta...). The upper osteophyte of the patella presents only a minor importance in the formation of STFE. This STFE formation begins probably with a progressive chondro-osteolysis of patella and trochlea. Then,

Chondrocalcinosis is known to be common in hyperparathyroidism. In order to discover the effect of parathyroidectomy on chondrocalcinosis and to investigate this association further, we studied two groups of patients. In one group were 41 postparathyroidectomy patients, and in the other 100 admissions to the acute geriatric unit. The total incidence of chondrocalcinosis in the parathyroidectomy group was 32%, and in the elderly control group 11%. There was little or no osteoarthrosis in these patients. It was found that chondrocalcinosis occurred in the normal population from the age of 75 and

BACKGROUND: Chondrocalcinosis is manifested by crystalline deposits of calcium commonly found during primary TKA for osteoarthritis. Its frequency among patients undergoing TKA is poorly defined, as is its influence on pain or function after TKA.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The purposes of this study are to (1) determine the prevalence of chondrocalcinosis in patients undergoing TKA for osteoarthritis; (2) evaluate the effect of chondrocalcinosis on ROM and The Knee Society scores; (3) determine if patients with chondrocalcinosis and severe synovitis who underwent synovectomy are at risk for lower po

BACKGROUND: Coexistence of degenerative arthritis and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystals (or radiological chondrocalcinosis) with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knees is frequent at the time of arthroplasty. Several studies suggest more rapid clinical and radiographic progression with CPPD than with OA alone. However, it is unclear whether chondrocalcinosis predisposes to higher risks of progression of arthritis in other compartments.
QUESTION/PURPOSES: We questioned whether chondrocalcinosis influences clinical scores, degeneration of other compartments, rupture of the ACL, survivor

Familial predisposition to chondrocalcinosis (CC) due to calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition is described in five English kindreds. Two families were characterized by premature-onset polyarticular CC with little associated structural arthropathy. In one of these families, recurrent childhood fits were strongly associated with subsequent development of CC. Affected members of the other three families resembled sporadic disease in showing predominantly late-onset, oligoarticular CC with mild arthritis and destructive change in only one case. Knee synovial fluid levels of in

OBJECTIVES: Chondrocalcinosis, characterized by calcium crystal deposition within articular cartilage, affects 5-15% of the general population and has recently been identified as an osteoarthritis risk factor. However, Its biological pathways remain unclear. We conducted a genome-wide association study of radiographically defined chondrocalcinosis knee and hand to identify its genetic determinants.
METHODS: GWAS analyses of knee, hand, and combined chondrocalcinosis included up to 9,317 Rotterdam Study participants, with replication inthe Versus Arthritis Osteoarthritis Genetics study and the

We report a case of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition (CPPD) disease presenting as acute arthritis of the left wrist. A 66-year-old woman with no significant family history was admitted with a 7-day history of swelling, persistent pain, and limitation of motion in her left wrist. She reported no recent trauma, surgery, or severe illness, and had no known comorbidities other than mild hypertension treated with low-dose thiazide diuretics. She was not on chronic glucocorticoids or other immunosuppressive drugs. Plain radiographs of her wrist, obtained during the initial days of

INTRODUCTION: Chondrocalcinosis results from calcium pyrophosphate crystals deposition in the joints. We report an exceptional case of aseptic psoas abscess with a deposition of calcium pyrophosphate crystals.
CASE REPORT: A 92-year-old man presented to our department for an acute onset of inflammatory pain in the left hip. Computed tomography detected a coxofemoral arthritis and multiple intramuscular collections located in the iliopsoas muscle and the gluteus minimus. A sample of the fluid was obtained with a guided aspiration, and its analysis revealed an inflammatory liquid with no bacter

OBJECTIVE: To identify pathogenic mutations that reveal underlying biological mechanisms driving osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: Exome sequencing was applied to two distant family members with dominantly inherited early onset primary OA at multiple joint sites with chondrocalcinosis (familial generalised osteoarthritis, FOA). Confirmation of mutations occurred by genotyping and linkage analyses across the extended family. The functional effect of the mutation was investigated by means of a cell-based assay. To explore generalisability, mRNA expression analysis of the relevant genes in the disco

Background. Silicoanthracosis is a pneumoconiosis due to occupational inhalation of silica and carbon dusts. Clinically, it can be associated with vasculitis or rheumatoid arthritis. In association with these diseases, silicoanthracosis can present within the lung with multiple pulmonary nodules which, as a differential diagnosis, can mimic metastatic disease or multiple abscesses. Case Presentation. We present the case of a 62-year old former pit worker with pulmonary nodules, chondrocalcinosis due to calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD), and a history of renal cancer. Extra-articular calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition is not rare, but physical disability is nevertheless unusual in such cases. We report the case of an elderly female with calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease, who presented with multiple tendon ruptures. The origin of the crystals and the mechanism of the rupture are discussed.

Tophaceous pseudogout is a calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal (CPPD) deposition disease that frequently affects elderly patient in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). A diagnosis of CPPD deposition disease in the TMJ is challenging due to its mimicking of other benign and malignant entities. Surgical exploration followed by histologic examination is by far the most frequently used diagnostic modality. We present a case of an 87-year-old female who presented with a right TMJ mass. A final diagnosis of tophaceous pseudogout was made on cellular material obtained by ultrasound-guided fine-nee

INTRODUCTION: Isolated tophaceous gout of the knee is a rare presentation, requiring a high degree of suspicion to differentiate it from chondrocalcinosis. If left untreated, chronic tophaceous gout can cause internal derangements and cartilage damage to the knee.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old male presented with a painful, swollen knee joint with stiffness. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed Arthrofibrosis with features of synovitis. Arthroscopic evaluation showed synovitis with chalky deposits over the chondral surfaces, menisci, anterior cruciate ligament and over synovium, which was typ

PURPOSE: Chondrocalcinosis can be associated with an inflammatory arthritis and aggressive joint destruction. There is uncertainty as to whether chondrocalcinosis represents a contraindication to unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). This study reports the outcome of a consecutive series of patients with chondrocalcinosis and medial compartment osteoarthritis treated with UKA matched to controls.
METHODS: Between 1998 and 2008, 88 patients with radiological chondrocalcinosis (R-CCK) and 67 patients with histological chondrocalcinosis (H-CCK) were treated for end-stage medial compartment a

The gene for familial chondrocalcinosis (MIM 118600; gene symbol CCAL2) has been localized to a 0.8-cM interval on the short arm of chromosome 5, between the polymorphic microsatellite markers D5S416 and D5S2114. We have undertaken the physical and transcript mapping of this interval, as well as regions telomeric to the interval, in an attempt to define ultimately the gene for this disorder. The physical map is composed of YAC, BAC, PAC, and cosmid resources and spans a physical distance of approximately 0.3 Mb. Using cDNA selection, we have identified eight novel transcripts in and around the

An association between urate gout and chondrocalcinosis has been suggested in several studies, but the situation remains ill-defined because of lack of appropriate controls, small numbers of patients studied, or retrospective investigation. An association has also been claimed between gout and avascular necrosis of the femoral head. 138 patients with gout and 142 non-gouty control subjects were carefully matched for age and x-rays were taken of the knees and pelvis. Chondrocalcinosis of the knees was detected in 8 patients with gout (5.8%), no cases being found in the control group. The differ
