Small cell osteosarcoma of the parietal region: a unique case at an unusual site.

Small cell osteosarcoma is a rare tumour that histologically mimics Ewing sarcoma, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and lymphoma, the presence of osteoid being diagnostic. This variant needs different management protocol, being non-radiosensitive and behaving more aggressively than conventional osteosarcoma. The aim of this article is to highlight such an entity at an unusual site--the parietal region--with unique diagnostic, treatment and prognostic considerations in a 16-year-old girl.

Uterine cervical carcinosarcoma with heterologous mesenchymal component: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Carcinosarcomas of the uterine cervix are very rare. Most of them have a homologous mesenchymal component, and cervical carcinosarcomas with a heterologous mesenchymal component are limited to nine cases. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old Japanese woman was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a ureteral stone. Imaging studies detected an indistinct cervical mass. A histopathological diagnosis of the cervical biopsy was a carcinosarcoma. A total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy was carried out upon a diagnosis of stage Ib1 cerv

Prostaglandin D synthase (beta-trace) in meningeal hemangiopericytoma.

The level of prostaglandin D synthase (PGDS), a major protein constituent of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), is altered in various brain diseases, including meningitis. However, its role in the brain remains unclear. PGDS is mainly synthesized in the arachnoid cells, the choroid plexus and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system. Among brain tumors, meningiomas showed intense immunoreactivity to PGDS in the perinuclear region. Thus, PGDS has been considered a specific cell marker of meningioma. In this study, we examined 25 meningeal hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) and found that 16 of the tumors

A Case Study of a High-Grade Serous Carcinoma of the Fallopian Tube Transformed into Carcinosarcoma at the Site of Peritoneal Dissemination With Immunohistological Evidence of an Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition.

We report a patient in whom a primary high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) of the fallopian tube transformed into a carcinosarcoma at the site of peritoneal dissemination, and immunohistological analysis suggested the involvement of an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The patient, a 70-year-old woman, had an abdominal mass palpated on admission, and a laparotomy was performed after a close examination. The resected right fallopian tube was cystically dilated, and a solid mass was observed in its lumen. The histological diagnosis was HGSC of the right fallopian tube with a papillary or co

Clinical diagnostic and radiographic features of a primary intradural spinal chondrosarcoma in a young adult: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS) is an aggressive subtype of chondrosarcoma that occurs extremely rarely in the central nervous system. Patients often present with pain or sensorimotor deficits, and resection is considered the gold standard. The role of adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy is largely unknown. OBSERVATIONS: A 22-year-old male presented with a 4-month history of progressive back and bilateral leg pain. He underwent imaging workup with magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine and was found to have an intradural, extramedullary, heterogeneously enhancing mass

An update of molecular pathology of bone tumors. Lessons learned from investigating samples by next generation sequencing.

The last decade has seen the majority of primary bone tumor subtypes become defined by molecular genetic alteration. Examples include giant cell tumour of bone (H3F3A p.G34W), chondroblastoma (H3F3B p.K36M), mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (HEY1-NCOA2), chondromyxoid fibroma (GRM1 rearrangements), aneurysmal bone cyst (USP6 rearrangements), osteoblastoma/osteoid osteoma (FOS/FOSB rearrangements), and synovial chondromatosis (FN1-ACVR2A and ACVR2A-FN1). All such alterations are mutually exclusive. Many of these have been translated into clinical service using immunohistochemistry or FISH. 60% of cen

Combination of microsurgery and Gamma Knife surgery for the treatment of intracranial chondrosarcomas.

OBJECT: Intracranial chondrosarcomas have a high risk of recurrence after surgery. This retrospective study of patients with intracranial chondrosarcoma was conducted to determine the long-term results of microsurgery followed by Gamma Knife surgery (GKS) for residual tumor or recurrence. METHODS: The authors treated nine patients whose median age was 36 years. Seven patients had low-grade chondrosarcomas (LGCSs), whereas mesenchymal chondrosarcomas (MCSs) were diagnosed in two. Radiosurgery was performed in eight patients, whereas one patient declined further surgical intervention and tumor-

Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone: a case report.

Chondrosarcoma is a malignancy of the mesenchymal tissue derived from transformed cells that produce the cartilage matrix. In the neck area, it represents less than 0.5% of malignant tumor pathology. Chondrosarcoma of the hyoid bone is extremely rare, only 20 cases having been published so far (PubMed 2014). We present the case of a 30-year-old patient from the urban area, admitted in the ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) Emergency Service with inspiratory dyspnea, dysphagia, stomatolalia, with evolutive and progressive clinical history of 2-3 months. Endoscopic examination revealed a pharyngolaryngeal

[Rare malignant laryngeal tumors].

Six rare malignant tumors were found in a group of 136 laryngeal malignancies accessioned between 1990 and 1992. The other 130 neoplasms were squamous cell carcinomas. One case each of an adenocarcinoma, a mucoepidermoid carcinoma and an undifferentiated carcinoma of nasopharyngeal type were of epithelial origin; a case of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma, a chondrosarcoma and a plasmacytoma were of mesenchymal origin. The clinical presentations, histological findings, and therapy employed in the six cases are discussed and the available literature reviewed.

Primary chondrosarcoma of ethmoid bone in a 6-year-old child.

Chondrosarcoma (CS) is a distinctly uncommon tumor in young patients and tends to be located in the extremities. Cartilaginous tumors in young patients are benign tumors. We report a case of a childhood CS in a 6-year-old boy who presented with right-sided proptosis. Radiological examination revealed a large destructive mass in right ethmoidal sinus extending into the surrounding sphenoidal sinus, intracranially, and the into right orbit, causing proptosis. Biopsy of the mass showed characteristic features of a well-differentiated CS. There are no reports of CS presenting as proptosis and aris

Presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma in cats.

Following unilateral enucleation, 4 Domestic Shorthair cats with an average age of 12.5 years (range: 9-16 years) were histologically diagnosed with a presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin). Medical records and follow-up were available for 3 of the 4 cats. Clinically, only 1 eye was affected in each cat; a mass lesion was noted in 2 cats, and a neoplasm was suspected in the other 2 cats. Grossly, 3 tumors presented as coalescing, poorly demarcated, white, friable masses filling the vitreous and intraocular ch

Sox9 expression is not limited to chondroid neoplasms: variable occurrence in other soft tissue and bone tumors with frequent expression by synovial sarcomas.

The transcription factor Sox9 is known to play a crucial role in normal chondrogenesis, and antibodies against Sox9 have been proposed as a diagnostic tool for neoplasms with chondroid differentiation. However, the pattern of Sox9 immunohistochemical expression by other bone and soft tissue neoplasms, as well as its diagnostic specificity, remain unexplored. The authors have performed immunohistochemistry with antibodies against Sox9 in 106 chondroid and nonchondroid bone and soft tissue neoplasms. Moderate to intense Sox9 nuclear staining was observed in 14/20 chondrosarcomas (70%), and in 24

Primary intracranial myxoma of the lateral skull base: a rare entity in clinical practice.

Myxomas are rare benign tumors arising from mesenchymal tissues throughout the body. These tumors are usually seen in the atrium of the heart and the jawbone. Involvement of the skull base with intracranial extension is extremely rare, and only a few cases of primary intracranial myxomas have been described in the literature. A rare case of primary myxoma of the temporal bone is presented in this article. The patient underwent a skull base surgery with a pre-diagnosis of possible chondrosarcoma. The tumor pathology revealed a diagnosis of myxoma with bone and meningeal involvement. Despite the

Primary osseous tumors of the orbit.

This review article focuses on the various primary osseous tumors of the orbit. Due to overlapping clinical, radiologic, and histologic features, differentiating these entities can pose significant challenges diagnostically. In this review, emphasis is placed on key distinguishing clinical, morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular characteristics. Also described are important prognostic details, recurrence risks, and the gold standard treatment methods for each entity. Relevant genetic syndrome associations are additionally covered. Orbital bone entities discussed include osteoma, osteoid

A case of von Recklinghausen's disease with bilateral pheochromocytoma-malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors of the adrenal and gastrointestinal autonomic nerve tumors.

A 48-year-old man with neurofibromatosis type 1 presented with chest pain, paroxysmal hypertension, tachycardia, and progressive respiratory insufficiency. Clinical investigation displayed calcified tumors in the anterior mediastinum and pararenal region. Histological examination at autopsy revealed composite tumors consisting of pheochromocytoma and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) at two sites: the left adrenal gland and the region surrounding the inferior vena cava, probably corresponding to the right adrenal gland. The MPNST component showed a varied histological appearance,

Induction of new-bone formation in the host bed by human bone-tumor transplants in athymic nude mice.

UNLABELLED: Specimens of twelve osteosarcomas, five chondrosarcomas, one giant-cell tumor, and five extraskeletal soft-tissue sarcomas were transplanted into male athymic nude (nu/nu) mice. Survival of the transplant was determined by the volume-doubling time and the sex chromatin of the tumor cells obtained from two female patients. By these criteria and the similarity of the histological composition of the original tumor and the transplant, survival occurred in four of twelve osteosarcomas and four of five chondrosarcomas. Without any local infiltration of lymphocytes or plasma cells, or oth

What is new about the molecular genetics in matrix-producing soft tissue tumors? -The contributions to pathogenetic understanding and diagnostic classification.

Soft tissue tumors encompass a wide variety of mesenchymal neoplasms exhibiting diverse clinical, pathologic, and molecular features. Among these, osteoid and/or chondroid matrix deposition in some soft tissue tumors represents a noticeable characteristic. Unlike matrices present in bone tumors where they likely reveal the respective cells of origin (i.e., osteoblastic or chondroblastic precursors), those existing in soft tissue tumors more often denote a metaplastic phenomenon and reflect the diversity of differentiation these tumors can display. While many soft tissue tumor types can occasio
