Convergent evolution of small body size occurs across many vertebrate clades and may reflect an evolutionary response to shared selective pressures. However it remains unclear if other aspects of phenotype undergo convergent evolution in miniaturized lineages. Here we present a comparative analysis of body size and shape evolution in marine angelfishes (Pomacanthidae), a reef fish family characterized by repeated transitions to small body size. We ask if lineages that evolve small sizes show convergent evolution in body shape. Our results reveal that angelfish lineages evolved three different

The occurrence of Sciadicleithrum variabilum on the gills of discus Symphysodon aequifasciatus larvae 7 days after hatching is reported for the first time. This suggests that altricial larvae are susceptible to Monogenea following gill differentiation and before complete yolk resorption.

Advances in genome sequencing have greatly accelerated the identification of sex chromosomes in a variety of species. Many of these species have experienced structural rearrangements that reduce recombination between the sex chromosomes, allowing the accumulation of sequence differences over many megabases. Identification of the genes that are responsible for sex determination within these sometimes large regions has proved difficult. Here, we identify an XY sex chromosome system on LG19 in the West African cichlid fish Chromidotilapia guntheri in which the region of differentiation extends ov

Secretory granule ultrastructure of teleost inner dental epithelial (IDE) cells has been reported to be similar to procollagen granules of other cells synthesizing collagen. This study describes the ultrastructure of secretory products in odontogenic cells during enameloid matrix formation in cichlids after inhibition of granule secretion with colchicine. Thirty-six fish were injected with 0.1 mg colchicine, then three were killed first at 2-hr intervals for 12 hr, then daily for 5 days. Tooth buds were processed for transmission electron microscopy, and ultrastructural alterations were assess

Metacercariae of species of Euclinostomum have been found encysted in kidney, liver, and muscles of several fish species, while adults occur in the mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and upper esophagus of fish-eating birds. The aim of this work was to gather molecular and morphological data from the type species, Euclinostomum heterostomum, as a starting point for needed revisions of the genus. Metacercariae were collected from cichlids in Lake Kinneret, Israel, and all were identified as E. heterostomum based on morphology. This identification was further confirmed by principal components anal

Sixteen countries, including Bangladesh, have reported the presence of tilapia lake virus (TiLV), an emerging tilapia pathogen. Fish polyculture is a common farming practice in Bangladesh. Some unusual mortalities reported in species co-cultivated with TiLV-infected tilapia led us to investigate whether any of the co-cultivated species would also test positive for TiLV and whether they were susceptible to TiLV infection under controlled laboratory experiments. Using 183 samples obtained from 15 farms in six districts across Bangladesh, we determined that 20% of the farms tested positive for Ti

The high demand for food consequently increases the entry of agricultural residues into water resources, and this phenomenon can affect non-target organisms in different ways. Environmentally relevant pesticide effects (per se or in combinations) are scarce in the scientific literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate: (1) the presence of pesticide residues in an important Brazilian source of water supply and power generation (Jacuí river), during 1 year of monitoring. (2) in a laboratory study verify the effects of the most frequently, herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide

Selective breeding is a potent method for developing strains with enhanced traits. This study compared the growth performance and stress responses of the genetically improved Abbassa Nile tilapia strain (G9; GIANT-G9) with a local commercial strain over 12 weeks, followed by exposure to stressors including high ammonia (10 mg TAN/L), elevated temperature (37 °C), and both for three days. The GIANT-G9 showed superior growth, including greater weight gain, final weight, length gain, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio, as well as a lower feed conversion ratio and condition factor

The present study aimed to characterize the behavior and evaluate the electromyographic (EMG), electrocardiographic (ECG), and respiratory responses of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) when exposed to different concentrations of Camphor (CPR) as a potential anaesthetic in immersion and recovery baths. The goal was to determine the impact of CPR on muscle, cardiac, and respiratory functions, and assess its suitability as an anesthetic for tilapia. Therefore, juvenile fish (38.2 ± 5.5 g) were acclimatized in aquaria for 20 days under controlled environmental and water quality conditions. Fou

Geophagus brasiliensis, popularly known as acará, is a common fish in lentic freshwater environments in South America. This species has a detritivorous-iliophagous or omnivorous feeding habit, with high food plasticity; however, there are no studies describing its intestinal tract histologically. Therefore, the present study analysed through histological and histochemical techniques the intestines of the acará. Adult specimens were collected with gillnets, anaesthetized and euthanized. Then, the fish were submitted to biometry and dissection to remove fragments of intestines. The samples were

BACKGROUND: Dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water is a vital abiotic factor in aquatic animal farming. A hypoxic environment affects the growth, metabolism, and immune system of fish. Glycolipid metabolism is a vital energy pathway under acute hypoxic stress, and it plays a significant role in the adaptation of fish to stressful environments. In this study, we used multi-omics integrative analyses to explore the mechanisms of hypoxia adaptation in Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT, Oreochromis niloticus).
RESULTS: The 96 h median lethal hypoxia (96 h-LH50) for GIFT was determined by line

The current work intended to inspect the hepato-nephrotoxicity of gibberellic acid (GA3) in juvenile of Oreochromis niloticus as well as the possibility of restoration after dietary addition of different concentrations of Spirulina platensis (SP). Fishes were evenly assorted into five groups: Group I assigned as control, Group II fed on basal diet and exposed to 150 mg/L gibberellic acid (GA3). The 3rd, 4th, and 5th groups exposed to150 mg/L gibberellic acid (GA3) and previously fed for two months on SP supplemented diets at levels of 5, 20, and 100 g/kg, respectively. Fish serum were utilized

Several diagnostic tools are available for veterinarians and fish health professionals to evaluate fish health and their abnormalities. However, reference data regarding the character and size of fish blood cells are limited. The purpose of this study was to analyze the morphology and morphometry of normal blood cells in zebrafish (Danio rerio), common carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio), and tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). To get a representative sample, we took blood from ten 6-mo old healthy fish from each species. Fish were purchased from an ornamental fish market and the local government fish

BACKGROUND: Aplocheiloid killifishes (Cyprinodontiformes, Aplocheiloidei) inhabiting Africa, America, and South Asia are unique in that embryos of annual species are capable of entering a state of diapause and becoming extremely stress resistant. Distribution of aplocheiloids is a biogeographical enigma: how freshwater fish managed to cross long-distance oceanic barriers to become intercontinentally distributed? As a hypothesis, we proposed their embryos to be a dispersal stage. To test it, we compared embryonal development in seawater and freshwater incubated eggs of Aplocheilus lineatus from
