New insights into structural alteration of enamel apatite induced by citric acid and sodium fluoride solutions.

Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy and complementary scanning electron microscopy were applied to analyze the surface structure of enamel apatite exposed to citric acid and to investigate the protective potential of fluorine-containing reagents against citric acid-induced erosion. Enamel and, for comparison, geological hydroxylapatite samples were treated with aqueous solutions of citric acid and sodium fluoride of different concentrations, ranging from 0.01 to 0.5 mol/L for citric acid solutions and from 0.5 to 2.0% for fluoride solutions. The two solutions were applied either

Influence of manganese on morphology and cell wall composition of Aspergillus niger during citric acid fermentation.

Morphology and cell wall composition of Aspergillus niger were studied under conditions of manganese sufficient or deficient cultivation in an otherwise citric acid producing medium. Omission of Mn2+ (less than 10(-7) M) from the nutrient medium of Aspergillus niger results in abnormal morphological development which is characterized by increased spore swelling, and squat, bulbeous hyphae. Fractionation and analysis of manganese deficient cell walls revealed increased chitin and reduced beta-glucan contents as well as reduction of galactose containing polymers, as compared to cell walls from m

Monocarboxylate permease gene SsMP1 regulates Sporisorium scitamineum mating, pathogenicity and absorption and transport of citric acid.

Sugarcane is an important sugar crop, and smut disease caused by Sporisorium scitamineum poses a severe threat with limited control measures. This study is based on transcriptome sequencing data from two distinct pathogenic strains of Sporisorium scitamineum generated in our laboratory. Among the significantly differentially expressed genes, we identified a gene predicted to encode a monocarboxylate permease, which we designated SsMP1. To investigate its biological function, SsMP1 knockout and complemented mutants were generated using PEG-mediated protoplast transformation. Our results showed

Kinetic optimization in green metal recovery: Citric acid vs glycine for sustainable Li-ion battery recycling.

Due to the natural depletion and potential toxicity of some metals in lithium ion batteries (LIB), it is getting important to recover valuable metals such as Li and Co from spent LIBs. This study used citric acid or glycine to leach the valuable metals from cathode materials of these spent LIBs such as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) or lithium manganese oxide (LMO) batteries. The effects of concentrations of the citric acid or glycine, solid-liquid ratio, and H2O2 on the leaching rate of valuable metals were investigated by a batch experiment. The leached Mn2 + and Li+ in the solution were recov

Citric acid-crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel microneedles enable gentle loading and rapid transdermal delivery of insulin.

Transdermal insulin delivery using microneedle (MN) systems provides a promising, patient-friendly alternative to conventional subcutaneous injections. In this study, we developed a citric acid crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel microneedle (CMC-CA HMN) system capable of efficient insulin loading and rapid, pH-triggered release. Thermal esterification produced a CMC-CA hydrogel enriched with abundant carboxyl groups, facilitating electrostatic insulin loading under acidic conditions and immediate release at physiological pH. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed su

Lysine and citric acid based pegylated polymeric dendritic nano drug delivery carrier and their bioactivity evaluation.

The main objective of this work is to synthesize multifunctional nanodendritic structural molecules that can effectively encapsulate hydrophilic as well as hydrophobic therapeutic agents. Four different types of fourth-generation lysine-citric acid based dendrimer have been synthesized in this work: PE-MC-Lys-CA-PEG, TMP-MC-Lys-CA-PEG, PE-MS-Lys-CA-PEG, and TMP-MS-Lys-CA-PEG. The antibacterial drug cefotaxime (CFTX) was further conjugated to these dendrimers. The dendrimer and drug-dendrimer conjugate structures were characterized with the help of FTIR,1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. Zeta si

Citric acid-modified pH-sensitive bone-targeted delivery of estrogen for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Bone targeted delivery of estrogen offers great promise for the clinical application of estrogen in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP). However, the current bone-targeted drug delivery system still has several issues that need to be solved, such as the side effects of bone-targeted modifier molecules and the failure of the delivery system to release rapidly in the bone tissue. It is important to aggressively search for new bone-targeted modifier molecules and bone microenvironment-responsive delivery vehicles. Inspired by the distribution of citric acid (CA) mainly in bone tis

Citric acid modified ultrasmall copper peroxide nanozyme for in situ remediation of environmental sulfonylurea herbicide contamination.

Herbicide residues in the environment threaten high-quality agriculture and human health. Consequently, in situ remediation of herbicide contamination is vital. We synthesized a novel self-catalyzed nanozyme, ultrasmall (2-3 nm) copper peroxide nanodots modified by citric acid (CP@CA) for this purpose, which can break down into H2O2 and Cu2+ in water or soil. Ubiquitous glutathione reduces Cu2+ into Cu+, which promotes the decomposition of H2O2 into •OH through a Fenton-like reaction under mild acid conditions created by the presence of citric acid. The generated •OH efficiently degrade nicosu

Nano Fe2O3 embedded in montmorillonite with citric acid enhanced photocatalytic activity of nanoparticles towards diethyl phthalate.

Nano-Fe2O3 embedded in montmorillonite particles (Fe-Mt) were prepared to degrade diethyl phthalate (DEP) with citric acid (CA) under xenon light irradiation. Compared to pristine montmorillonite (Na-Mt), the embedding process increased 14.5-fold of iron content and 1.8-fold of specific surface area. The synthesized Fe-Mt have more oxygen vacancies than Fe2O3 nanoparticles (nFe2O3), which could induce more reactive oxygen species (ROSs) generation in the presence of CA under xenon lamp irradiation. Fe-Mt with CA enhanced photo-assisted degradation of DEP 2.5 times as compared to nFe2O3 with CA

Size-Controlled Preparation of Gold Nanoparticles Deposited on Surface-Fibrillated Cellulose Obtained by Citric Acid Modification.

Cellulose-based functional materials have gained immense interest due to their low density, hydrophilicity, chirality, and degradability. So far, a facile and scalable preparation of fibrillated cellulose by treating the hydroxy groups of cellulose with citric acid (F-CAC) has been developed and applied as a reinforcing filler for polypropylene composite. Herein, a size-selective preparation of Au nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by F-CAC is described. By modifying the conditions of transdeposition method, established in our group previously, a transfer of Au NPs from poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)

Growth/no growth interfaces of table olive related yeasts for natamycin, citric acid and sodium chloride.

The present work uses a logistic/probabilistic model to obtain the growth/no growth interfaces of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Wickerhamomyces anomalus and Candida boidinii (three yeast species commonly isolated from table olives) as a function of the diverse combinations of natamycin (0-30 mg/L), citric acid (0.00-0.45%) and sodium chloride (3-6%). Mathematical models obtained individually for each yeast species showed that progressive concentrations of citric acid decreased the effect of natamycin, which was only observed below 0.15% citric acid. Sodium chloride concentrations around 5% slightl

Cementogenesis and soft tissue attachment after citric acid treatment in a human. An electron microscopic study.

The four maxillary incisors and two maxillary premolars of a 25-year-old male patient were used to study epithelial and connective tissue attachment 67 days and 164 days after flap surgery and cutting of an horizontal intradentinal groove near the buccal cervical region. Three teeth were topically conditioned for 3 minutes with citric acid pH = 1. The three other teeth were used as controls. The histologic examination was carried out in double-blind conditions; the examiners did not know which specimens were acid treated until the end of the study. Two of the three cases treated with citric ac

Hypercalcemia in acute uremia and following citric acid administration: differential effect on parathyroid gland microtubule content.

Hypercalcemia, which occurs 4 hr after bilateral nephrectomy in normal rats, is not seen 4 hr after either bilateral ureterotomy or sham surgery. These results indicate that it is loss of renal mass per se, not the uremic syndrome, which is responsible for the hypercalcemia. Citric acid levels also increase 4 hr after nephrectomy, and a degree of hypercalcemia and hypercitricemia comparable to that which follows nephrectomy can be produced by administration of citric acid to normal rats. In an attempt to evaluate the role of the parathyroid gland in the development of hypercalcemia in these tw
