Severe neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus successfully treated with rituximab: an alternative to standard of care.

Demyelinating syndrome secondary to systemic lupus erythematosus (DS-SLE) is a rare encephalomyelitis burden with a high risk of disability and death. We report on a 49-year-old Caucasian woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complicated by severe cognitive dysfunction, brainstem disease, cranial nerve palsies, weakness and numbness in limbs and multiple discrete magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) areas of damage within the white matter of semioval centers, temporal lobe, external capsule, claustrum, subinsular regions and midbrain. She also had multiple mononeuritis diagnosed through se

A cholinergic hypothesis of the unconscious in affective disorders.

The interactions between distinct pharmacological systems are proposed as a key dynamic in the formation of unconscious memories underlying rumination and mood disorder, but also reflect the plastic capacity of neural networks that can aid recovery. An inverse and reciprocal relationship is postulated between cholinergic and monoaminergic receptor subtypes. M1-type muscarinic receptor transduction facilitates encoding of unconscious, prepotent behavioral repertoires at the core of affective disorders and ADHD. Behavioral adaptation to new contingencies is mediated by the classic prototype rece

Organization of multisynaptic inputs to the dorsal and ventral dentate gyrus: retrograde trans-synaptic tracing with rabies virus vector in the rat.

Behavioral, anatomical, and gene expression studies have shown functional dissociations between the dorsal and ventral hippocampus with regard to their involvement in spatial cognition, emotion, and stress. In this study we examined the difference of the multisynaptic inputs to the dorsal and ventral dentate gyrus (DG) in the rat by using retrograde trans-synaptic tracing of recombinant rabies virus vectors. Three days after the vectors were injected into the dorsal or ventral DG, monosynaptic neuronal labeling was present in the entorhinal cortex, medial septum, diagonal band, and supramammil

Neuroanatomical correlates of neuropsychiatric symptoms in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease research has largely concentrated on the study of cognitive decline, but the associated behavioural and neuropsychiatric symptoms are of equal importance in the clinical profile of the disease. There is emerging evidence that regional differences in brain atrophy may align with variant disease presentations. The objective of this study was to identify the regions of decreased grey matter (GM) volume which were associated with specific neuropsychiatric behaviours in patients with mild Alzheimer's disease. Voxel-based morphometry was used to correlate GM derived from T(1)-wei

MR of childhood metachromatic leukodystrophy.

PURPOSE: To investigate the MR findings of childhood metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD). METHODS: Nine MR imaging studies in seven children (five girls and two boys, 10 to 32 months old) with MLD were evaluated retrospectively for the extent and progression of white matter abnormalities and the presence of contrast enhancement. RESULTS: All seven cases showed symmetric, confluent high signal intensity on T2-weighted images in the periventricular white matter and centrum semiovale. A posterior predominance of white matter abnormalities was noted in all cases. Although initially spared from de

Morphological alterations in neocortical and cerebellar GABAergic neurons in a canine model of juvenile Batten disease.

The pathogenesis of brain dysfunction in a canine model of juvenile Batten disease was studied with techniques designed to determine sequential changes in mitochondrial morphology and cytochrome oxidase (CO) activity, and in neurons and synapses using gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a neurotransmitter. Histochemical and immunocytochemical methods were employed. Mitochondrial alterations were found in a select population of nonpyramidal neurons in neocortex and claustrum, and in cerebellar basket cells. Proportions of affected neurons at any one time remained constant over the disease course,

Topography of Pick body distribution in Pick's disease: a contribution to understanding the relationship between Pick's and Alzheimer's diseases.

A case of Pick's disease with the onset at 51 years old and a 15-year clinical course was studied. The brain, weighing 740 g, showed striking atrophy limited to the frontal and temporal lobes and inferior parietal lobules of both sides. The topographic distribution of Pick bodies (PBs) was investigated; PBs were present most densely in the amygdaloid, hippocampus, innominate substance, posterior cingulate and insula, inferior parietal lobule, posterior inferior temporal gyrus, and fusiform and lingular gyri. They were present less densely in the anterior frontal and temporal gyri, occipital gy

The effects of deep-reaching lesions in the cortical face area on phonation. A combined case report and experimental monkey study.

The present study compares the phonatory ability of a patient with a deep-reaching left-sided lesion in the region of the cortical face area with that of two squirrel monkeys in which the patient's lesion has been reduplicated bilaterally. The lesion involved Broca's area, the inferior pre- and postcentral cortex, rolandic operculum, inferior parietal cortex insula, claustrum, parts of the putamen and white matter underlying the inferior frontoparietal and insular cortex. While the squirrel monkey did not show any phonatory deficits, the patient became aphonic for more than 10 weeks following

Levodopa challenge neuroimaging of levodopa-related mood fluctuations in Parkinson's disease.

Some patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) develop dose-related fluctuations in mood. This may reflect alterations in dopamine-influenced brain circuits that mediate emotion. However, there is no available information to localize which dopamine-influenced neurons may be most affected. Eight patients with PD and clinically significant levodopa-related mood fluctuations (mania, depression, or anxiety) were compared to 13 patients with similarly severe PD and fluctuations of motor function but not of mood. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured with positron emission tomograph

Functional Neural Architecture of Working Memory in Musicians: An ALE Meta-Analysis and Review.

Musical expertise is often associated with enhanced cognitive abilities, underpinned by neural mechanisms unique to musicians. Research has provided evidence of associations between musical training and functional aspects of cognition. However, the neural changes associated with musical expertise, particularly in relation to working memory, remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to examine differences in functional neural activity between musicians and non-musicians during working memory tasks. Meta-analytic connectiv

Exploring the predictive value of lesion topology on motor function outcomes in a porcine ischemic stroke model.

Harnessing the maximum diagnostic potential of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) by including stroke lesion location in relation to specific structures that are associated with particular functions will likely increase the potential to predict functional deficit type, severity, and recovery in stroke patients. This exploratory study aims to identify key structures lesioned by a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) that impact stroke recovery and to strengthen the predictive capacity of neuroimaging techniques that characterize stroke outcomes in a translational porcine model. Clinically rele

A basic MRI anatomy of the rat brain in coronal sections for practical guidance to neuroscientists.

Identification of the brain structures in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the rat is very important for the experimental work of many neuroscientists. Our intention was to recognize most of the structures without overlapping the MRI sections with the histological templates. Three live rats were used for this study who were examined in a micro-MRI apparatus by performing T2-weighted sequences in serial brain sections. Most of the white matter structures were easily identified, e.g. the anterior commissure, corpus callosum with forceps minor and major, cingulum, external and internal cap

Axonal regrowth of layer II-III visual-projecting cortical neurons in rats fails beyond eye opening.

Fetal neurons (embryonic age E16) of occipital origin grafted in the visual cortex of albino rats at increasing postnatal stages (P0, P7, P15, P30, P60, P120) can be activated by photic stimulation. Inputs originate from five major areas of the brain ipsilateral to the graft, namely, the claustrum, the periallocortex/proisocortex, the isocortex, the visual thalamus, and some unspecific subthalamic and hypothalamic nuclei. All inputs decrease in number with the age at which grafting was performed. Isocortical afferents exhibit furthermore a progressive laminar shaping. In neonates, layer II-III

Imaging of Status Epilepticus.

MRI plays an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of status epilepticus (SE). Approximately half of patients with SE do not have pre-existing epilepsy, and the cause of de novo SE is frequently unknown. The role of MRI in the identification of causes of SE is invaluable. MRI is often helpful as a diagnostic tool in cases of non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) with ambiguous EEG findings. Thus, MRI is recommended for all patients presenting with de novo SE, patients with known epilepsy with the first episode of SE and NCSE with equivocal EEG. Different peri-ictal MRI (PMA) alterati

Expression, distribution, and function of sex hormone receptors in the rabbit brain.

Sex hormones such as estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone are crucial for vertebrate brain functions by interacting with their specific receptors. In rabbits, these hormones regulate sexual behavior, scent marking, nest building, and nipple searching across different brain regions. However, information on sex hormone receptors in the rabbit brain is limited. We examined intracellular progesterone (PR), estrogen (ER), and androgen receptors (AR) in the rabbit brain. PR activation by progesterone is associated with pregnancy and maternal behaviors like nest building and nipple searching. PR

Adult-onset epilepsy with startle-induced seizure after febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome: A case report.

Startle-induced seizure is a rare type of reflex seizure triggered by unexpected sensory stimuli that often occurs in children with early acquired cerebral lesions or brain malformations. We report a unique case of adult-onset epilepsy with startle-induced seizures. A 24-year-old woman had suffered high fever and focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures. A diagnosis of febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) was made based on the febrile infection occurring 7 days to 24 h before the onset of status epilepticus, which met all criteria for cryptogenic new-onset refractory status epil

Pattern of abnormalities on gray matter in patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis: An updated meta-analysis.

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a prevalent form of epilepsy originating in the temporal lobes. A common pathological feature is hippocampal sclerosis (HS), characterized by the loss of neuronal cells, which is associated with the typical temporal mesial lobe epilepsy (MTLE). In this study, we aimed to analyze gray matter alterations in patients with MTLE with right and left hemisphere HS using voxel-based morphometry and compare them with control groups. A meta-analysis was performed based on the guidelines contained in the Protocol Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-An

A Postsynaptic Density Immediate Early Gene-Based Connectome Analysis of Acute NMDAR Blockade and Reversal Effect of Antipsychotic Administration.

Although antipsychotics' mechanisms of action have been thoroughly investigated, they have not been fully elucidated at the network level. We tested the hypothesis that acute pre-treatment with ketamine (KET) and administration of asenapine (ASE) would modulate the functional connectivity of brain areas relevant to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, based on transcript levels of Homer1a, an immediate early gene encoding a key molecule of the dendritic spine. Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 20) were assigned to KET (30 mg/kg) or vehicle (VEH). Each pre-treatment group (n = 10) was randomly split in

A Dysfunctional Descending Pain Modulation System in Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review and ALE Meta-Analysis.

Pain, a physiological protective mechanism, turns into a complex dynamic neural response when it becomes chronic. The role of neuroplastic brain changes is more evident than the peripheral factors in the maintenance, modulation and amplification of chronic low back pain (cLBP). In this background, we summarise the brain changes in cLBP in a coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies. Databases ('PubMed', 'Scopus' and 'Sleuth') were searched till May 2022 and the activity pattern was noted under the 'wit
