Jellyfishes represent a group of species that play an important role in oceans, particularly as a food source for different taxa and as a predator of fish larvae and planktonic prey. The massive introduction of artificial sound sources in the oceans has become a concern to science and society. While we are only beginning to understand that non-hearing specialists like cephalopods can be affected by anthropogenic noises and regulation is underway to measure European water noise levels, we still don't know yet if the impact of sound may be extended to other lower level taxa of the food web. Here

Despite growing insights into the composition of marine invertebrate microbiomes, our understanding of their ecological and evolutionary patterns remains poor, owing to limited sampling depth and low-resolution datasets. Previous studies have provided conflicting results that both confirm and deny the existence of phylosymbiosis between marine invertebrates and marine bacteria. Here, we investigated potential animal-microbe symbioses in Pseudoalteromonas, a bacterial genus consistently identified as a core microbiome taxon in diverse invertebrates. Using a pangenomic analysis of 236 free-livin

Understanding factors affecting the susceptibility of organisms to thermal stress is of enormous interest in light of our rapidly changing climate. When adaptation is limited, thermal acclimation and deacclimation abilities of organisms are critical for population persistence through a period of thermal stress. Holobionts (hosts plus associated symbionts) are key components of various ecosystems, such as coral reefs, yet the contributions of their two partners to holobiont thermal plasticity are poorly understood. Here, we tested thermal plasticity of the freshwater cnidarian Hydra viridissima

Like many corals the skeletal organic matrix and associated epithelium of Mycetophyllia reesi is physico-chemically unstable to preparative procedures for electron microscopy. Ethanol cryofracture of mineralized and demineralized material is accompanied by delamination of tissue and skeleton. Filamentous algae occur in the interface and account for some but not all of the separation artifact. Transmission microscopy accompanied by decalcification requires embedment in glycerol jelly to preserve the skeletal organic matrix. Even then, the matrix is not fixed and is not retained within the gel u

In many marine sessile organisms (for example sponges and stony corals) the skeleton is formed by an accretive growth process, where layers of material are secreted on top of each other in a surface normal deposition process. In many of these organisms the growth process exhibits a strong morphological plasticity due to differences in exposure to water movement. In general, many of these organisms tend to form thin-branching growth forms under sheltered conditions, while the growth form gradually transforms into a more compact shape when the exposure of water movement increases. In this paper,

All physicians must be educated in treating injuries incurred when a diver comes into contact with any dangerous marine life. Stinging invertebrates are the most commonly encountered dangerous marine animals. Venomous vertebrate marine animals are less common than stinging invertebrates and easier to recognize. However, they may be much more deadly. Sharks pose the greatest danger to divers. However, bites from other marine animals can be painful, become infected and require extensive medical treatment.

This paper presents a case of Irukandji syndrome (envenomation by the jellyfish, Carukia barnesi) with pulmonary oedema and hypokinetic cardiac failure. This case highlights the need for victims (and operators of tours venturing into the waters of North Queensland) to treat even apparently innocuous stings with vinegar and to avoid freshwater bathing and rubbing of stings immediately after such incidents. It also reinforces the use of phentolamine to treat the symptoms of catecholamine release associated with the syndrome. This patient required inotropic support and further underlines the need

Among parasites with vertebrate hosts, myxozoans (Cnidaria) remain some of the least studied both taxonomically and geographically. We conducted the first reported surveys for myxozoans from amphibian hosts in Ecuador at two localities: a mid-elevation cloud forest on the Chocó region (western slopes of the Andes) and a lowland Amazonian tropical forest, east of the Andes. We sampled 177 gall bladders and 17 kidneys across the surveys. We found no evidence of myxozoans in the cloud forest site. Myxozoans of the genus Cystodiscus were encountered in the gallbladders of multiple amphibian specie

Scyphomedusae (Phylum Cnidaria, Class Scyphozoa) are perceived as a nuisance due to their sudden outbreaks that negatively affect human activities (particularly tourism and fisheries) mainly because of their stings. A brief review of the history of scyphozoan blooms in the Mediterranean and updated information available after 2010 point to an increase in scyphozoan outbreaks. Whilst the negative effects on public health, aquaculture, coastal industrial activities and fisheries operations are undeniable, the effects on the ecosystem are not well defined. We focus on the trophic interactions bet

BACKGROUND: Although cnidarians are mostly marine organisms, the occurrence of freshwater jellyfish frequently arouses the interest of ecologists, due to their sudden and unusual appearances in natural and artificial water bodies around the world.
METHODS: This study describes a series of cases compatible with cnidarian envenomation that occurred coincidentally in time and space with the presence of Craspedacusta sowerbii Lankester, 1880 jellyfish in the province of Misiones (El Saltito stream) in January 2022. A year later, its presence was confirmed in another watercourse of this province (

Six of nine adults who developed Red Sea coral contact dermatitis had seafood allergies. Contact with the "fire" coral was followed by a series of skin eruptions starting with an immediate pruritic urticaria-like lesion which forced the victims out of the water. Within minutes the affected area became erythematous and edematous with eventual blister formation approximately 6 hours after the initial contact. The blisters resolved, leaving violaceous papules and plaques in a streaky fashion corresponding to where the coral brushed the skin. The lesions became shiny and lichenoid in 3 weeks while

Myxobolus dibombensis sp. n. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) is described from the fins of the African carp, Labeobarbus batesii, based on morphological and molecular data. Prevalence of infection was 51.9% (67/129). Ovoid to spherical cyst-like plasmodia were found in the intrasegmental region and among the fin rays. No pathological changes were found in the fish host tissue surrounding the cyst-like plasmodia. Mature myxospores were ovoid in frontal view and lenticular in lateral view, with slightly truncated anterior and rounded posterior ends. Myxospores measured 16.8 (15.8-18.0) μm lo

BACKGROUND: Haloclava producta, the "ghost anemone", is a burrowing sea anemone in estuarine sediments of the US East Coast and Gulf of Mexico. It has never been identified as harmful to human beings; however, residents of Long Island, New York develop a pruritic, erythematous, vesiculopapular dermatitis on areas of the body that contact these organisms. Neither the condition nor its cause has been described in the medical literature.
METHODS: We reviewed information of all water-related dermatitis reported by beach personnel, health providers, and affected swimmers to the Office of Marine Ec

UNLABELLED: Dermatoses caused by marine organisms are frequently seen in dermatology clinics worldwide. Cutaneous injuries after exposure to marine environments include bacterial and fungal infections and lesions caused by aquatic plants and protists. Some of these diseases are well known by dermatologists, such as Vibrio vulnificus septicemia and erysipeloid, but others are uncommon, such as envenomation caused by ingestion or contact with certain dinoflagellates or cyanobacteria, which are associated with rashes that can begin within minutes after exposure. Many marine/aquatic invertebrates,

Complete sexual development is not easily amenable to experimentation in hydra. Therefore, the analysis of gene function and gene regulation requires the introduction of exogenous DNA in a large number of cells of the hydra polyps and the significant expression of reporter constructs in these cells. We present here the procedure whereby we coupled DNA injection into the gastric cavity to electroporation of the whole animal in order to efficiently transfect hydra polyps. We could detect GFP fluorescence in both endodermal and ectodermal cell layers of live animals and in epithelial as well as i

A species of epiphytic Prorocentrum (Dinophyta, Prorocentrales, collected from the macroalga Dictyota dichotoma, was brought into culture. Based on morphological characteristics, this isolate was identified as Prorocentrum belizeanum. Analysis of the culture extract using high-performance liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry indicated the production of okadaic acid, a toxic polyether linked with the human diseases, diarrhetic shellfish poisoning and ciguatera fish poisoning.

Twenty-five years of Australian marine bioresources collecting and research by the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) has explored the breadth of latitudinally and longitudinally diverse marine habitats that comprise Australia's ocean territory. The resulting AIMS Bioresources Library and associated relational database integrate biodiversity with bioactivity data, and these resources were mined to retrospectively assess biogeographic, taxonomic and phylogenetic patterns in cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and central nervous system (CNS)-protective bioactivity. While the bioassays used wer

Ciguatera fish poisoning is an important public health problem wherever humans consume tropical and subtropical fish. It accounts for over half of fish-related poisonings in the United States but is uncommonly diagnosed and underreported. Produced by dinoflagellates, ciguatoxin accumulates up the food chain in herbivorous and carnivorous fishes. Cnidaria jellyfish and related invertebrates) have not previously been associated with direct ciguatera intoxication in humans. We report the first case of ciguatera fish poisoning associated with cnidarian ingestion. A 12-year-old Tongan female presen
