Cerebral white matter and neurodevelopment of preterm infants after coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis.

OBJECTIVE: Coagulase-negative staphylococci are the most common pathogens causing late-onset sepsis in the neonatal intensive care unit. Neonatal sepsis can be associated with cerebral white matter damage in preterm infants. Neurodevelopment has been shown to be correlated with apparent diffusion coefficients, fractional anisotropy, and axial and radial diffusivities of the white matter. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. SETTING: Twenty-eight-bed neonatal intensive care unit at a tertiary care children's hospital. PATIENTS: Seventy preterm infants (gestational age <32 wks), 28 with coagulas

Identification and antibiotic susceptibility of coagulase negative staphylococci isolated in corneal/external infections.

AIMS: To identify and determine antibiotic susceptibility of coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from patients with chronic blepharitis, purulent conjunctivitis, and suppurative keratitis. METHODS: A retrospective review of all culture positive cases of chronic blepharitis, purulent conjunctivitis, and suppurative keratitis between July 1995 and December 1996 was performed. Cases in which CoNS were the sole isolates were analysed. Species identification was performed by using a commercially available standardised biochemical test system. Antibiotic susceptibility to penicillin, g

Deoxyribonucleic acid base composition and biochemical properties of certain coagulase-negative enterotoxigenic cocci.

Eight coagulase-negative, enterotoxigenic strains of cocci and one weakly coagulase-positive strain isolated from a number of different sources, including cases of food poisoning incidents, were evaluated for their relationship to Staphylococcus aureus on the basis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) buoyant density and physiological studies. One strain of cocci produced enterotoxins A and C, two strains produced types B and C, four strains produced only type C, and one strain only type D. The enterotoxin produced by one strain of cocci was serologically untypable. None of the test organisms produc

Clinical Impact of Vancomycin MIC on Outcomes in Patients With Coagulase-negative Staphylococcal Bacteremia.

PURPOSE: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are Gram-positive organisms that are a known component of normal skin flora and the most common cause of nosocomial bacteremia. For CoNS species, the vancomycin MIC breakpoint for susceptibility set by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute is ≤4 µg/mL. There has been published reports of vancomycin heteroresistance in CoNS with vancomycin MICs of 2 to 4 µg/mL. The aim of this retrospective cohort analysis was to assess the clinical impact of vancomycin MICs <2 µg/mL versus ≥2 µg/mL in adult patients with CoNS bloodstream infections. M

Rapid detection of methicillin resistance in coagulase-negative Staphylococci with the VITEK 2 system.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of the new VITEK 2 system (bioMérieux, Marcy l' Etoile, France) for the detection of methicillin resistance in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) by using AST-P515 and AST-P523 test cards. Analyses of the VITEK 2 oxacillin MIC determination evaluated according to the actual breakpoint (>/=0.5 micro g/ml) of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards resulted in a high sensitivity of 99.2% but a moderate specificity of 80%. The newly included oxacillin resistance (OR) test of the VITEK 2 system displayed a high sensiti

Species dependent variability in the susceptibility of coagulase-negative staphylococci to various antimicrobial agents.

The in-vitro activity of 20 beta-lactam antibiotics and vancomycin was determined against three different species of coagulase-negative-staphylococci. All isolates were susceptible to vancomycin (MIC90 3.12-6.25 mg/l) although occasional tolerance was seen. Most isolates (85%) of Staphylococcus hominis were susceptible to methicillin and other beta-lactams including cephalothin, cefapirin, cefamandole, imipenem and BMY28142, while 90% of Staph. haemolyticus isolates were resistant to these agents. Staph. epidermidis was intermediate in susceptibility with 50% of isolates being methicillin resi

[Healthy carriers of positive staphypococcal coagulase and the prevention of food poisonings in aircraft catering].

The most scrupulous respect should be paid to rules of hygiene in aircraft catering. In addition, human beings are the most dangerous vectors of food poisoning and infection. Enterotoxic staphylococci are responsible for about 75% of such cases. A year-long check was therefore made on the staff of a firm engaged in intercontinental aircraft catering. A total of 1.135 bacteriological examinations were carried out on biological specimens from the oropharyngeal cavity. 9.42% of those engaged in various food preparation processes were identified as healthy carriers of coagulase-positive staphyloco

Quorum-sensing control of sepsis in the coagulase-negative staphylococcal species Staphylococcus haemolyticus.

Quorum sensing is often proposed as a target for antivirulence drug development against bacterial pathogens. Coagulase-negative staphylococci are leading causes of nosocomial blood infections and associated mortality. However, there is a severe lack of understanding how virulence and quorum sensing affect coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis. We show that the Agr quorum-sensing system has a strong impact on mortality from experimental sepsis caused by the exemplary coagulase-negative staphylococcal species Staphylococcus haemolyticus. This was based on strict Agr regulation of phenol-solub

Characterization of indigenous coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from Chinese spontaneously fermented meat products.

Technological, safety-related and volatile properties were analyzed in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolates from Chinese spontaneously fermented meat products. A total of 107 CNS isolates were identified via 16 S rRNA sequencing, and the most recovered species were S. saprophyticus (53.3 %), S. edaphicus (12.1 %), and S. epidermidis (10.3 %). Among them, 58 CNS isolates belonging to 9 species were selected with higher activities of catalase, nitrate reductase, proteolysis, and lipolysis, as well as higher tolerance to stressful environmental conditions. Then, 7 CNS isolates belongin

Phenotypical and Genotypical Antimicrobial Resistance of Coagulase-negative staphylococci Isolated from Cow Mastitis.

The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from dairy cows with subclinical mastitis. Antimicrobial resistance in staphylococci were evaluated by breakpoint values specific to the species (EU-CAST). The presence of resistance-encoding genes was detected by multiplex PCR. A total of 191 CNS isolates were obtained. The CNS isolates were typically resistant to penicillin (67.4%), tetracyc-line (18.9%), and erythromycin (13.7%). CNS isolates (78.0%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial compou

Genotypic Diversity of Methicillin-Resistant Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci Isolated from Inpatients and Outpatients.

We investigated the prevalence of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci (MRCoNS) isolated from hospitalized patients and outpatients (OP). Out of 350 staphylococcal isolates collected from three hospitals, 190 were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). These isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility tests, detection of mecA, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) typing. Among the 190 isolated CoNS, Staphylococcus epidermidis (47.3%) and Staphylococcus haemolyticus (44.2%) were the most prevalent species. Other CoNS species that were isolated were Staphyl

Coagulase-positive staphylococcal necrotizing fasciitis subsequent to shoulder sprain in a healthy woman.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a deep infection of the subcutaneous tissue that progressively destroys fascia and fat; it is associated with systemic toxicity, a fulminant course, and high mortality. NF most frequently develops from trauma that compromises skin integrity, and is more common in patients with predisposing medical conditions such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, alcoholism, renal disease, liver disease, immunosuppression, malignancy, or corticosteroid use. Most often, NF is caused by polymicrobial pathogens including aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. NF caused by Staphylococcu

Coagulase negative staphylococcal peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis patients: review of 232 consecutive cases.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species is the most common cause of peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis; however, the optimal treatment strategy of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species peritonitis remains controversial. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: All of the coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species peritonitis in a dialysis unit from 1995 to 2006 were reviewed. During this period, there were 2037 episodes of peritonitis recorded; 232 episodes (11.4%) in 155 patients were caused by coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species. RESULTS: Th

Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis--the hidden peril of coagulase-negative staphylococcus in blood cultures.

Reported here is a successfully treated case of native mitral valve endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis and a review of 47 similar cases reported in the English literature. In the literature review, perineal skin flora appeared to be the source of the organism in patients with endocarditis. Staphylococcus lugdunensis is generally susceptible in vitro to beta-lactam agents. If speciation is not performed, these bacteria might be mistaken for Staphylococcus epidermidis, a relatively avirulent bacterium that is a common contaminant of cultures. Prompt speciation can lead to earlier
