An investigation focused on the transformation and distribution behaviors of trace elements and natural radionuclides around a coal gangue brick plant was conducted. Simultaneous sampling of coal gangue, brick, fly ash and flue gas were implemented. Soil, soybean and earthworm samples around the brick plant were also collected for comprehensive ecological assessment. During the firing process, trace elements were released and redistributed in the brick, fly ash and the flue gas. Elements can be divided into two groups according to their releasing characteristics, high volatile elements (releas

This study investigates steam washing (SW) as an innovative pretreatment for municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) dechlorination, useful for a more effective stabilization in cementitious matrix. By using a detailed analytical approach (XRPD, XRF, ICP-MS, IRMS, SEM) and geochemical modeling, great focus is dedicated on pollutant leaching reduction and changes in ash physicochemical characteristics as a function of exposure time. The research demonstrates that SW removes up to 70 % cadmium, 17 % zinc, and 10 % lead, primarily by dissolving the soluble and carbonate/hydroxide fra

The effects of calcium-to-silicon ratio on the properties of fly ash (FA)-based tobermorite and its removal performance of Zn2+ and Mn2+ were studied. The calcium-to-silicon ratio had a significant effect on the structural properties of the tobermorite samples. The specific surface area, pore volume, and average pore size of mesoporous tobermorite samples with different calcium-to-silicon ratios (0.8TOB, 1.2TOB, and 1.6TOB) were much larger than those of FA, and those of 1.2TOB were the largest, which were 53.29 m2/g, 0.448 cm3/g, and 30.50 nm, respectively. The removal efficiencies of Zn2+ an

Two environmental problems exist in some tropical and subtropical areas: the Aedes aegypti (L.) (Ae. aegypti) mosquito and thousands of tons of heavy oil fly ash (HOFA) from power plants. Herein, micro/nanoparticles of HOFA have been utilized as a larvicide against Ae. aegypti without any chemical or biological additive materials. We estimated the accumulative mortalities in the third instar after 24/48 h (h). We found that after 24 h of exposing the larvae to the HOFA microsized, the LC50 and LC90 were 0.55 and 4.87 mg/ml, respectively, while they were 0.10 and 0.36 mg/ml after 48 h. At the s

Inhibition mechanisms of sulfur-, nitrogen- and phosphorus- based inhibitors on the de novo synthesis of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) were studied by exploring speciation evolution of carbon, chorine and copper in fly ash under laboratory-scale experiments. Significant inhibition of PCDD/Fs by thiourea (TUA) and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) was observed as 97.2% and 98.2%, respectively, except for potassium dihydrogen phosphate (PDP). ADP and PDP exhibited better inhibition on PCDFs than on PCDDs, whereas TUA exhibited the opposite effect. After adding i

The management and control of mercury emissions from waste incinerators have become more significant, because waste incinerators are sinks to treat mercury-containing consumer products. This study investigated the effects of mercury concentrations and waste incineration temperatures on mercury speciation using a lab-scale experimental instrument. The removal characteristics of different mercury species were also investigated using an apparatus to simulate the fabric filter with a thin layer of additives such as Ca(OH)2 and NaHCO3, activated carbon (AC), and fly ash. HgCl2 generation rates peak

This paper presents the study of the immobilization of heavy metals like Pb, Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn by fly ash based geopolymers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of fly ash based geopolymeric solidification/stabilization technology. For S/S of waste, geopolymer as a binding agent was mixed with waste at different ratios. For initial waste characterization, contaminants concentration and some physical waste characterization such as dry density, bulk density, specific gravity, porosity, moisture holding capacity, and moisture content were determined. Waste and geopolyme

Nano-structured zinc sulfide (Nano-ZnS) has been demonstrated to be a promising alternative to activated carbon (AC) for controlling mercury emission from coal combustion flue gas. The ultimate fate of the mercury-laden Nano-ZnS after mercury capture is mostly disposed in landfill with fly ashes. Thus, the stability of mercury adsorbed on the Nano-ZnS is of considerable significance in the secured disposal of fly ash after mercury removal and in the commercial application of the Nano-ZnS sorbent for removal of mercury from coal combustion flue gas. In this work, a modified toxicity characteris

To investigate the contamination levels of respirable dust released in the work environment and the induced workers' health risk at a coal-fired power plant, we collected 405 dust samples from different dusty workstations by personal sampling during the coal-fired power generation process. Then, an inhalation risk assessment model from the USEPA was combined with the Monte Carlo simulation method to quantitatively evaluate the health risk caused by dust inhalation. Of 10 workstations researched, the dust concentration in the most workstations exceeded the prescribed occupational exposure limit

Emitted pollutants from the Agios Dimitrios lignite-fired power plant in northern Greece show a very strong linear correlation with the free calcium oxide content of the lignite ash. Dust (fly ash) emissions are positively correlated to free calcium oxide content, whereas sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions are negatively correlated. As a result, at present, the Agios Dimitrios Power Plant operates very strictly within the legislative limits on atmospheric particulate emission. In the present study, the factors to be considered in assessing the impact of lignite combustion on the environment are pr

The residue concentrations and congener profiles of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) were examined in fly ash and bottom ash released from different thermal industrial processes in Vietnam. PCDD/F concentrations and toxic equivalents (TEQs) in the ash samples varied greatly and decreased in the following order: steel making > aluminum recycling > medical waste incinerator > boilers > municipal waste incinerator > tin production > brick production > coal-fired power plant. Both the precursor and de novo synthesis were estimated as possible formation mechanisms of dioxins in th

This work investigates the catalytic performance of unmodified waste-to-energy (WtE) ash for nitrogen oxides (NOx) abatement via selective catalytic reduction. NOx conversions up to 44% were measured in a simulated flue gas (2,600 ppm NO, 9,700 ppm CO, 1.8% H2O). Pretreatment substantially enhanced NO conversion relative to the as-received ash, with H2 pretreatment yielding up to 91% conversion. Characterization revealed a low surface area (17.8 m2 g-1), SiO2-CaO-Al2O3 matrix, and trace Fe, Mn, and Cu. Temperature-programmed reduction and thermal analysis indicated redox-active, non-metallic s

The widespread incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) has raised concerns regarding environmental pollution caused by the hazardous heavy metal lead (Pb) in fly ash (FA), necessitating safe treatment prior to landfill disposal. This study developed a novel organic chelating agent-TA (The chelating agent is named as an acronym derived from the two primary monomers), a trithiocyanuric acid-functionalized allylthiourea macromolecule, and evaluated its effectiveness in stabilising Pb in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA). Compared to conventional organic chelating agents suc

Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA) has been used for CO2 sequestration, but the synergistic effects of mechanical and ammonium salt treatment on both sequestration efficiency and treatment safety require further study. This study proposed an integrated approach that combined ball milling, ultrasound, and ammonium salt treatment to enhance CO2 sequestration efficiency in FA while significantly reducing heavy metal content, thereby ensuring its safe recycling and utilization. The results demonstrated that optimal CO2 sequestration efficiency and minimal heavy metal leaching wer

Waste-to-energy fly ash can be repurposed if treated to limit the leaching of potentially toxic elements such as Zn. Ashes with lime additives can be stabilised via gypsum formation, while those without additives are better suited for acid-leaching treatment (and material recovery). In this study, ashes from grate-fired boilers - three without lime addition and one ash with lime addition - were treated by acid-leaching and gypsum stabilisation, respectively. By combining X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and sequential leach

The fly ash (FA) from the combustion of heavy oil in power stations is characterized by fine particles containing toxic metals. The sample utilized in this study was gathered from the dust precipitators of seven heavy-oil-consuming Iranian power plants. Substantial quantities of heavy metals, particularly vanadium, iron, and nickel, have been detected in the sample, indicating both its potential utility and hazard to the soil and groundwater. The harmful consequences of FA disposal on the environment have led to the adoption of recycling as a treatment approach in this study. The valorization

In this study, an N-P-containing compound (ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP)) and an auxiliary material (CaO) were used to inhibit the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). ADP significantly inhibited the formation of PCDD/Fs by the inhibition efficiencies of 98.45% for total concentration and 96.55% for toxic concentration. ADP was the best single inhibitor on toxic PCDFs (96.55%), and the inhibition on toxic PCDDs improved after ADP (90.91%) coupled with CaO (95.69%). In the temperature range of 300-350 °C, ADP inhibited the carbon gasification by reducing

Incineration has emerged as one of the acceptable ways to treat municipal solid waste (MSW) due to its potential in reducing the mass and volume of the waste. However, it produces two major by-product residues, namely MSW-bottom ash (MSW-BA) and MSW-fly ash (MSW-FA). These residues have gained great attention to their hazardous nature and potential to be reused and recycled. In this paper, the physicochemical characterizations of the MSW-BA and the MSW-FA were performed, followed by a systematic investigation of metals extraction from MSW-BA and MSW-FA. Various extracting agents were used to i
