Hybrid Renal Cortical Imaging with Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography/Computed Tomography in a Pediatric Patient with Severe Caudal Regression Syndrome.

Caudal regression syndrome (CRS) or sacral agenesis is a rarely seen malformation with a varying degree of structural abnormalities, including multiorgan system dysfunctions, reported with higher incidence among children of mothers with diabetes, as in this case. Spinal anomalies can range from coccyx hemiagenesis to the total absence of lower lumbar vertebrae and sacrum in most severe cases. Herein, we have presented a 9-year-old patient with CRS who had renal failure. Technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid renal scintigraphy revealed bilaterally non-functioning kidneys with no renal cortical

Stress distribution changes in bovine vertebrae just below the endplate after sustained loading.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the pattern of stress distribution in the vertebral body just behind the endplate, and to document its changes due to sustained loading. METHODS: Twelve fresh bovine coccygeal motion segments were dissected and tested. Each specimen was axially loaded with a sustained compressive force of 50% of its estimated compressive strength. Before loading, after 1.5 h and after 3 h of loading, the distribution of the axial pressure under the bottom vertebra (i.e., just below its top endplate) was recorded at three force levels (25%, 37.5% and 50% of the estimated compressive stre

Sacrococcygeal chordoma in a 9-year-old boy.

A case of sacrococcygeal chordoma in a 9-year-old boy is presented. The symptoms at presentation were pain in both legs and sacrococcygeal region for the last two years that increased in the last four weeks irradiating mainly to the left leg. X-ray and CT scan examinations of the lumbar region revealed an expansive process in the coccygeal region with multiple calcifications and a partially eroded coccyx. There was no invasion of the retroperitoneum and regional lymph nodes. A biopsy was performed and showed cords and nests of cells with large cytoplasm, sometimes vacuolated, nuclei with moder

The release of endogenous norepinephrine from the coccygeal artery of spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar-Kyoto rats.

The potassium (K+)-induced release of endogenous norepinephrine from the coccygeal artery of spontaneously hypertensive rats has been studied as a function of the development of hypertension. The absolute amount of norepinephrine released by potassium was greater in spontaneously hypertensive rat than the normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rat, regardless of age or blood pressure. However, the %-fractional release was elevated only in the rats with chronic hypertension. Preincubation of tissues with the alpha 2-antagonist, yohimbine, significantly enhanced norepinephrine overflow in all tissues studied

[Arachnoid cyst of the cauda equina: a contribution to the etiology of coccygodynia].

The authors report a case of arachnoid cyst of cauda equina with severe chronic coccygodynia. The value of radioculography in the diagnosis of this condition is pointed out. Resection of the cyst abolished coccygodynia completely and permanently. No case of arachnoid cyst causing coccygodynia has been found in the available literature.

Posterior Detachment of the Anorectum Following Blunt Trauma to the Perineum.

To the best of our knowledge, there have been few reports in the literature about perineal injury without an associated pelvic fracture. In this report, we are going to discuss the mechanism, management, and outcome of two cases of perineal injury associated with car accidents. The two cases, one male and one female, presented with sustained isolated soft tissue injuries to the perineum. Both cases revealed a separated anorectum from the coccyx and sacrum without detectable damage to the lumen or surrounding sphincter. Pelvis fracture was not present in either case nor did the urinary bladder

Clinical and Radiological Characterization of an Infant with Caudal Regression Syndrome Type III.

Caudal regression syndrome is a rare disorder of developmental failure of lumbosacral vertebra and corresponding spinal cord during notochord formation. The severity varies from absent coccyx to complete absence of lumbosacral vertebra and caudal spinal cord. Both genetic and environmental factors are believed to play roles in aetiopathogenesis of caudal regression. The authors report a two-month-old child born to a diabetic mother, in whom the diagnosis of caudal regression syndrome type III was confirmed based on clinical and radiological characteristics. The child was managed by the multidi

[Axial and semi-axial views of the pelvis in bone scintigraphy. Technic, anatomy, limitations, possibilities].

A new method of skeletal scintigraphy offering axial views of the pelvis is described. The anatomy, method of examination, limits and advantages of the axial pelvis views are given by reporting on the scintigraphic examinations (167 axial pelvis views) of 50 patients with 52 increased uptakes of the isotope in the pelvis region. The standard ventral and dorsal pelvis views represented all increased uptakes. However, when employing the axial views the localisation and extent of the tracer accumulation could be more precisely determined in 73%. In 27% no additional information was given. This ne

Sacrococcygeal teratoma with severe gluteal deformation in a young woman: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is a germ cell tumor derived from primitive germ layers. While SCTs are a common neoplasm in infants and children, they are very rare in adults. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 24-year-old Afghan woman with a severe gluteal deformity, who suffered from pelvic pain and difficulty in sitting and walking. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: SCT is an important differential diagnosis for a presacral mass that can be identified through performing both magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans. When the lesion grows posteriorly to the cocc

Primary Neuroendocrine Tumor of the Lumbar Spine: Rare Tumor Mimicking Nerve Sheath Tumor of the Spine.

Neuroendocrine tumors (Carcinoid tumors) generally arise from enterochromaffin cells of gut and bronchi. Primary carcinoid tumors of spine are extremely rare and have been described in sacrum and coccyx. Primary carcinoid tumors involving the spinal cord are still rarer, and review of literature revealed only two cases reported. Our patient a 39-year-old male had diagnosed as a case of nerve sheath tumor (intradural extramedullary) at LV4 region on neuroimaging. However, postoperatively, the tumor turned out to be a rare primary spinal carcinoid tumor on histopathological examination and immun

Investigation of the impact of image-guided radiotherapy selection on image registration results and non-coding RNAs for cervical cancer patients.

Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) is a crucial technique in cervical cancer treatment, enabling precise targeting of tumor tissues while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. Kilovoltage cone-beam computed tomography (KVCBCT) is commonly used for IGRT, allowing for real-time imaging of tumor position and anatomy during treatment sessions. However, the selection of optimal landmarks for image registration in IGRT remains a topic of investigation. This study investigated role of IGRT in cervical cancer treatment by analyzing eight cervical cancer patients treated at Univer

Non-neurodestructive ganglion impar blocks for coccydynia and related disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND/IMPORTANCE: Chronic coccydynia is a challenging condition to manage. Conflicting evidence exists regarding the role of the ganglion impar in coccygeal nociception. When conservative treatments fail, minimally invasive interventions at the ganglion impar may be effective in providing relief. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ganglion impar blocks (GIBs) for the management of chronic coccydynia. EVIDENCE REVIEW: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Relevant s

Acute coccydynia related to precoccygeal calcific tendinitis.

Symptomatic deposits of calcium hydroxyapatite have been reported in various sites other than the shoulders or hips. Sudden-onset coccydynia can lead to the discovery of calcific deposition in the precoccygeal region. We present the case of precoccygeal calcific tendinitis in a patient with acute coccydynia.

Quantitative paleoparasitology applied to archaeological sediments.

Three techniques to extract parasite remains from archaeological sediments were tested. The aim was to improve the sensibility of recommended paleoparasitological techniques applied in archaeological remains. Sediment collected from the pelvic girdle of a human body found in Cabo Vírgenes, Santa Cruz, Argentina, associated to a Spanish settlement founded in 1584 known as Nombre de Jesús, was used to search for parasites. Sediment close to the skull was used as control. The techniques recommended by Jones, Reinhard, and Dittmar and Teejen were used and compared with the modified technique prese

Coccydynia: a woman's tail.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on coccydynia with specific reference to those cases of pregnancy and birth-related onset. METHOD: Databases (Medline, CINAHL, MIDIRS) were searched using the keywords coccydynia, coccygodynia, coccyx, spine, pelvis, injury, and trauma. The references contained within this review are those which give clear information about clinical cases and are least anecdotal. FINDINGS: Much of the literature is of poor quality when judged by current standards. Where there is no other literature older references remain of interest. There is little information about inci

Clonal telomeric fusions and chromosome instability in a subcutaneous sacrococcygeal myxopapillary ependymoma.

Subcutaneous sacrococcygeal myxopapillary ependymoma (SSME) is a very rare neurologic tumor with no demonstrable connection to the spinal column. Little is known of its etiology, clinical characteristics, or cytogenetics. Giemsa-band analysis revealed a stemline karyotype showing 62 chromosomes. Sidelines within the tumor showed clonal telomeric fusions resulting in dicentric chromosomes involving the fusion of numerous chromosomes. Recurrent telomeric fusions resulted in the progressive deletion of chromosome bands 11q25 and 11q23 and subsequently the entire long arm. This is the first case o
