Menière's disease is a chronic inner ear disorder characterized by recurrent vertigo attacks, tinnitus, and fluctuating hearing loss, which may progress to severe sensorineural hearing impairment in a subset of patients. Since 2015, international consensus criteria distinguish between definite and probable disease. Current therapeutic strategies follow a stepwise approach, ranging from non-ablative to ablative interventions. Cochlear implantation (CI) has emerged as an effective option for auditory rehabilitation and has also shown beneficial effects on vertigo and tinnitus. Combined strategie

The technical fitting of cochlear implant (CI) systems is a central component of the CI care process. On the one hand, this consists of a standardized procedure, while on the other, the individual needs of the patient are taken into account. It starts with the "initial fitting" during basic therapy, where the initial focus is on achieving a satisfactory impression of sound and loudness. In the follow-up therapy, fine adjustment is carried out to achieve the best possible speech perception in quiet and in noise. The aim is to individually adjust the CI processor to audiological targets. The fit

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Cochlear implantation has demonstrated benefit for restoring hearing in patients with Ménière's disease. We sought to examine disease and management factors that may influence postoperative speech performance and vertigo control.
METHODS: A single-center retrospective chart review between 2010 and 2023 of patients with Ménière's disease receiving a cochlear implant (CI). The primary outcome was 1-year postoperative word recognition score on Consonant-Nucleus-Consonant (CNC) testing. Postoperative vertigo control was assessed as a secondary outcome. Variables inclu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To evaluate whether cochlear implantation can mitigate tinnitus perception and its discomfort among patients with severe-to-profound hearing loss, in order to provide an answer on a possible treatment for a health condition with high prevalence and impact on quality of life.
RECENT FINDINGS: Tinnitus can develop after peripheral hearing loss and is associated with altered auditory processing. It does not only involve auditory structures but also aberrant neural activity and interaction with other regions of the Central Nervous System associated with emotion, attention, angu

Cochlear implants have successfully improved hearing in severe and profoundly deaf patients in addition to improving their quality of life. Implant extrusion and wound infection of a cochlear implant are one of the most common postoperative complications, although it does not occur frequently (1.5%-5% of cases).1,2 We present a case of an extruding cochlear implant with dehiscence that was successfully reimplanted, a procedure of which there have been few previous reports in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Describe the first case of cochlear implantation (CI) for auditory rehabilitation of a patient with craniometaphyseal dysplasia (CMD) and progressive mixed hearing loss.
PATIENTS: A 65-year-old woman with known autosomal dominant CMD presented with progressive mixed hearing loss and declining benefit from conventional hearing aids. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperostosis of the entire craniofacial skeleton. Hearing evaluation demonstrated pure-tone thresholds in the profound range bilaterally by air conduction, and bone conduction thresholds that ma

The indications for cochlear implantation (CI) have expanded over the last few years. There is evidence that some adult patients with pre- or perilingual onset of deafness may gain from implantation. Similarly, CI in patients with single-sided deafness may offer significant benefits in terms of quality of life and social as well as academic development. In this setting, directional hearing may be restored and speech comprehension, especially in noise, may be optimized. In patients with intractable tinnitus and profound hearing loss, CI not only improves speech perception, but also helps to red

Cochlear implant (CI) fitting is the technical adjustment of a CI processor to the individual needs of a subject. Fitting comprises the choice of stimulation strategy and determination of the lower and upper stimulation levels for the individual. This electrical dynamic range defines the stimulation range for the real-time functioning of the CI system. All of the CI manufacturers provide a large set of parameters which have to be optimized for proper hearing and speech comprehension. As a consequence of the widening of indication criteria for CIs and lowering the age of implantation for childr

OBJECTIVE: To review the alternative techniques in cochlear implantation and to compare the complications with different techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who had undergone cochlear implantation were reviewed. Those patients who were operated using alternative techniques were selected and evaluated for the cause of their hearing loss and for the type of alternative technique that was utilized. Complication types and rates in these patients were evaluated.
RESULTS: In total, 38 patients were operated using alternative techniques following preoperative or intraoperative findings. The

OBJECTIVE: Identify variables associated with paediatric access to cochlear implants (CIs).
DESIGN: Part 1. Trends over time for age at CI surgery (N = 802) and age at hearing aid (HA) fitting (n = 487) were examined with regard to periods before, during, and after newborn hearing screening (NHS). Part 2. Demographic factors were explored for 417 children implanted under 3 years of age. Part 3. Pre-implant steps for the first 20 children to receive CIs under 12 months were examined.
RESULTS: Part 1. Age at HA fitting and CI surgery reduced over time, and were associated with NHS implementati

IMPORTANCE: Though the effects of cochlear implantation (CI) on patients with hearing loss has been well described, its effect on the auditory and vestibular symptoms in patients with Ménière's disease (MD) has not been firmly established.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether CI in patients with MD improves hearing performance as measured by standard post-CI audiometric testing and to describe the impact of CI on subjective auditory and vestibular quality-of-life measures.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective review of all patients with MD 18 years or older who met diagnostic criteri

OBJECTIVES: To report patient outcomes after transcanal endoscopic cochlear implantation for sensorineural hearing loss.
PATIENTS: Males and female subjects more than 7 years old with sensorineural hearing loss (confirmed with audiologic studies) were selected. CT imaging was used to rule out any anatomic anomalies of the temporal bone. Smaller pediatric patients whose canal might still be growing and who might have a higher incidence of otitis media and otitis externa were excluded. Obese adults whose canal skin was too thick to allow good access down the ear canal were also excluded.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implantation is a safe surgery for restoration of hearing in profoundly deaf candidates. Profound deafness may at times, manifest as a part of a syndrome associated with cardiac anomalies. Cardiac co-morbidities may influence cochlear implantation in a spectrum of ways from minor intra operative issues to major life threatening complications. Issues related to pre operative, intra operative and post operative care needs to be addressed by an efficient in house cardiologist.
OBJECTIVES: Our retrospective study was aimed at analyzing the various cardiac co-morbidities enc

OBJECTIVES: We describe our experience of intraoperative and postoperative complications of cochlear implantation in an adult population.
METHODS: Between April 1986 and June 2010, the senior author (A.S.) performed 449 cochlear implantations in two different institutions. Of these, 212 implantations were in adults. The operative techniques were similar in all cases.
RESULTS: Complications were observed in 12 of the 212 adult cases (5.7%), of which 10 were major (4.7%) and 2 minor (1%). In 7 cases, reimplantation was necessitated by device failure (6 cases; 2.8%) or device extrusion (1 case;

Imaging procedures are a mainstream tool in the daily ENT workflow. Cochlear Implant patients are representing a special population with specific demands for imaging. There are different imaging techniques available for pre-operative evaluation, surgery and postoperative controls with different indications and consequences. High-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are mainly used in the evaluation process. New procedures, as digital volume tomography, are increasingly used intra- and postoperatively. Especially the intracochlear positioning in malformations of the inn
