Operationalizing Social Environments in Cognitive Aging and Dementia Research: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Social environments are a contributing determinant of health and disparities. This scoping review details how social environments have been operationalized in observational studies of cognitive aging and dementia. METHODS: A systematic search in PubMed and Web of Science identified studies of social environment exposures and late-life cognition/dementia outcomes. Data were extracted on (1) study design; (2) population; (3) social environment(s); (4) cognitive outcome(s); (5) analytic approach; and (6) theorized causal pathways. Studies were organized using a 3-tiered social ecolog

Aging Heads of State: The Politics of Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Increasing life expectancy may explain why more elderly candidates appear to be running for office. This raises general questions regarding the specific risks of old age and frailty in demanding political positions. Therefore, I tried to give important contemporary examples of elderly leaders, study the mean age of leading political figures over the last 3 decades and present historical examples of heads of state with age-associated brain diseases and cognitive deficits. I reviewed the literature on mental illness and politics and analyzed the ages of international political leader

The impact of cataract surgery on cognitive function in an aging population.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the relationship between cognitive function and cataract surgery, as it is rarely addressed, and yet is becoming increasingly important as the number of elderly people in the world continues to rise. RECENT FINDINGS: From US Census and international data, it is expected that the predicted proportion of people over 65 years of age in a number of countries will increase drastically over a half century. Therefore, the percentage of patients with cataracts and cognitive impairment, which are both age-related diseases, will be expected to rise as well. Although there a

Role of stress, depression, and aging in cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.

Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder and the most common cause of progressive cognitive dysfunction and dementia. Despite considerable progress in elucidating the molecular pathology of this disease, we are not yet close to unraveling its etiopathogenesis. A battery of neurotoxic modifiers may underpin neurocognitive pathology via deleterious heterogeneous pathologic impact in brain regions, including the hippocampus. Three important neurotoxic factors being addressed here include aging, stress, and depression. Unraveling "upstream pathologies" due to the

Differential balance of prefrontal synaptic activity in successful versus unsuccessful cognitive aging.

Normal aging is associated with a variable decline in cognitive functions. Among these, executive function, decision-making, and working memory are primarily associated with the prefrontal cortex. Although a number of studies have examined the structural substrates of cognitive decline associated with aging within this cortical area, their functional correlates remain poorly understood. To fill this gap, we aimed to identify functional synaptic substrates of age-associated frontal-dependent deficits in layer 2/3 pyramidal neurons of medial prefrontal cortex of 3-, 9-, and ≥ 23-month-old Fische

Sexual dimorphism in healthy aging and mild cognitive impairment: a DTI study.

Previous PET and MRI studies have indicated that the degree to which pathology translates into clinical symptoms is strongly dependent on sex with women more likely to express pathology as a diagnosis of AD, whereas men are more resistant to clinical symptoms in the face of the same degree of pathology. Here we use DTI to investigate the difference between male and female white matter tracts in healthy older participants (24 women, 16 men) and participants with mild cognitive impairment (21 women, 12 men). Differences between control and MCI participants were found in fractional anisotropy (FA

Can meditation slow rate of cellular aging? Cognitive stress, mindfulness, and telomeres.

Understanding the malleable determinants of cellular aging is critical to understanding human longevity. Telomeres may provide a pathway for exploring this question. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. The length of telomeres offers insight into mitotic cell and possibly organismal longevity. Telomere length has now been linked to chronic stress exposure and depression. This raises the question of mechanism: How might cellular aging be modulated by psychological functioning? We consider two psychological processes or states that are in opposition to one another-threat

Longitudinal analysis of abnormal domains comprising mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during aging.

Research directed towards early diagnosis and therapy of dementia demands rapid identification of prodromal mild cognitive impairment (MCI). A longitudinal study was designed to clarify whether different domains of cognitive impairment, tested by Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), help predict dementia. After 3.74+/-2.94 years of follow-up among 291 cognitively normative volunteers, 73 developed MCI. During the next 3.88+/-3.01 years of MCI follow-up, 47.9% of MCI developed dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT), 20.5% of MCI developed vascular dementia (VaD) and 31.5% maintained persistent MCI

Clinical cognition in the age of cardiovascular AI.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly entering cardiovascular medicine through electrocardiography, imaging, wearable monitoring, risk prediction, heart failure management, and clinical decision support. Its value, however, should not be judged only by technical accuracy, speed, or computational sophistication. Cardiovascular care requires clinicians and teams to convert multimodal, longitudinal, incomplete, and context-dependent information into action under uncertainty. This Perspective argues that AI should be understood not as a replacement for clinical intuition, but as a cognitive inst

Cognitive resilience in ageing: determinants and interventions.

Understanding the factors that contribute to the preservation of cognitive abilities into advanced age despite brain injury or disease is a key goal of ageing research. Up until the last two decades, the extent of brain pathology could only be fully appreciated at autopsy. Advances in laboratory and imaging biomarkers now mean that cognitive function can be understood in the context of markers of brain injury and specific pathologies (eg, Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body disease, and cerebrovascular disease). Knowledge on the characteristics of individuals displaying cognitive resilience and its

Ageing-Related Neurodegeneration and Cognitive Decline.

Neuropathological assessment was conducted on 1630 subjects, representing 5% of all the deceased that had been sent to the morgue of Uppsala University Hospital during a 15-year-long period. Among the 1630 subjects, 1610 were ≥41 years of age (range 41 to 102 years). Overall, hyperphosphorylated (HP) τ was observed in the brains of 98% of the 1610 subjects, and amyloid β-protein (Aβ) in the brains of 64%. The most common alteration observed was Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) (56%), followed by primary age-related tauopathy (PART) in 26% of the subjects. In 16% of the subjects,

Listening with an Ageing Brain - a Cognitive Challenge.

Hearing impairment has been recently identified as a major modifiable risk factor for cognitive decline in later life and has been becoming of increasing scientific interest. Sensory and cognitive decline are connected by complex bottom-up and top-down processes, a sharp distinction between sensation, perception, and cognition is impossible. This review provides a comprehensive overview on the effects of healthy and pathological aging on auditory as well as cognitive functioning on speech perception and comprehension, as well as specific auditory deficits in the 2 most common neurodegenerative

Hearing Impairment and Cognition in an Aging World.

With the increasing number of older adults around the world, the overall number of dementia cases is expected to rise dramatically in the next 40 years. In 2020, nearly 6 million individuals in the USA were living with Alzheimer's disease, the most common type of dementia, with anticipated growth to nearly 14 million by year 2050. This increasing prevalence, coupled with high societal burden, makes prevention and intervention of dementia a medical and public health priority. As clinicians and researchers, we will continue to see more individuals with hearing loss with other comorbidities inclu

HIV, aging, and cognition: emerging issues.

The prevalence of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder has not changed from the pre- to the potent antiretroviral therapy era, remaining at approximately 50%. In research settings, mild neurocognitive disorder (MND) and so-called asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI) are now more common than HIV-associated dementia. The diagnosis of ANI is misleading because functional deficits, when tested in a laboratory, and degree of neuropsychologic testing abnormalities are often comparable in patients with ANI and those with symptomatic MND. Age-related comorbidities increase the risk of cognit

Cognitive dysfunction and the neurobiology of ageing in cats.

With improvements in nutrition and veterinary medicine the life expectancy of pet cats is increasing. Accompanying this growing geriatric population there are increasing numbers of cats with signs of apparent senility. A recent study suggests that 28 per cent of pet cats aged 11 to 14 years develop at least one geriatric onset behavioural problem, and this increases to over 50 per cent for cats of 15 years of age or older. While behavioural changes may result from systemic illness, organic brain disease or true behavioural problems, the possibility of age-related cognitive dysfunction is often

Normative Cognitive Decline in Old Age.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize trajectories of normative cognitive aging. METHODS: Older persons without dementia at study enrollment (n = 1,010) had annual cognitive testing for up to 24 years (mean = 9.9 years, standard deviation = 5.0), died, and underwent a neuropathologic examination to quantify 9 postmortem markers of common neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular conditions. To accommodate the heterogeneity in cognitive trajectories, we used functional mixed effects models, which allow individuals to have different patterns of cognitive decline under a unified model structure. RESULTS: In a

Shiftwork experience, age and cognitive performance.

Changes of alertness and cognitive efficiency has been suggested in people whose circadian rhythms are disrupted, e.g. night or shift-workers. Data from field and laboratory studies have demonstrated short-term cognitive disturbances related to circadian rhythm disruption. By contrast, little is known about the long-term consequences of chronic sleep deprivation, as can be observed with shift-work, on cognitive abilities. The present paper is aimed at evaluating, on a large cross-sectional sample of workers, the long-term influence of shift-work on verbal memory and speed performances. Partici

Cognitive-Motor Dual Task Training Synergistically Improves Aging-related Cognitive Dysfunction By Reducing TMAO and Suppressing TXNIP/NLRP3 Pathway.

Cognitive dysfunction is highly prevalent in older adults and severely impairs daily activities and quality of life. Rehabilitation training alleviates aging-related cognitive dysfunction (ARCD); however, the mechanisms underlying differential effects of different training regimens remain poorly understood. Motor training relieves TMAO-triggered neuroinflammation, while cognitive training (CT) improves ARCD via suppression of chronic inflammatory signaling. Cognitive-motor dual-task training (CMDT) yields more obvious cognitive protection than single-mode training, yet the molecular mechanisms

Different hypothalamic regions in late-onset Alzheimer's disease and aging: involvement and links with cognitive and non-cognitive features.

Early-onset Alzheimer's disease (EOAD) and late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) have different clinical and neuroimaging characteristics, and non-cognitive deficits usually observed are suggestive of hypothalamic dysfunctions. Here, we assessed in vivo the hypothalamic volumetry in EOAD and LOAD and explored its association with cognitive and non-cognitive features. The hypothalamus and its subunits were segmented on T1-weighted MRIs from 14 younger and 23 elderly controls (EC), 14 EOAD, and 28 LOAD. Amyloid or fluid biomarker confirmation was not available for all participants, and diagnosti

Associations of benzodiazepine use with cognitive ability and age-related cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: It remains uncertain whether long-term use of benzodiazepines is associated with age-related cognitive decline, and if cognitive ability in early life is the driver of any association. This study examines the association of cognitive ability in young adulthood with later use of benzodiazepines and explores whether the use of benzodiazepines during adult life is associated with cognitive decline in late midlife. METHODS: The study samples include cognitive tests on the Børge Priens Prøve (BPP) from the conscription board examination (age 19 years) from 335 513 men born 1949-1961 an
