The potential of transcranial magnetic stimulation for population-based application: a region-based illustrated brief overview.

The awareness of the global trends in neuroscience study, especially in the cognitive neuroscience field, should be increased. One notable approach is the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) not only as a research tool but also as a choice for treatment and rehabilitation in neurological disorders, such as post-stroke hemiplegia, visuospatial neglect syndrome, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and psychiatric conditions such as major depression and schizophrenia. All of these occur in significant numbers in highly populated regions. This paper briefly discusses the basic protocols and potent

The social-emotional processing stream: five core constructs and their translational potential for schizophrenia and beyond.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive neuroscience approaches to translational research have made great strides toward understanding basic mechanisms of dysfunction and their relation to cognitive deficits, such as thought disorder in schizophrenia. The recent emergence of Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience has paved the way for similar progress to be made in explaining the mechanisms underlying the social and emotional dysfunctions (i.e., negative symptoms) of schizophrenia and that characterize virtually all DSM Axis I and II disorders more broadly. METHODS: This article aims to provide a roadmap

The social life of Pavlovian learning.

This article proposes that Pavlovian learning contributes to the formation and stabilization of social beliefs and collective commitments. We argue that associative processes linking reward and threat to social cues shape how beliefs acquire affective salience, motivational persistence, and resistance to revision. Within this framework, social cognition is conceptualized not as a purely inferential process, but as one constrained by affective learning mechanisms operating across distributed neural systems involved in reward, threat processing, and contextual regulation. Appetitive learning may

Getting a grip on problem gambling: what can neuroscience tell us?

UNLABELLED: In problem gamblers, diminished cognitive control and increased impulsivity is present compared to healthy controls. Moreover, impulsivity has been found to be a vulnerability marker for the development of pathological gambling (PG) and problem gambling (PrG) and to be a predictor of relapse. In this review, the most recent findings on functioning of the brain circuitry relating to impulsivity and cognitive control in PG and PrG are discussed. Diminished functioning of several prefrontal areas and of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) indicate that cognitive-control related brain

A translational neuroscience & computational evaluation of a D1R partial agonist for schizophrenia (TRANSCENDS): Rationale and study design of a brain-based clinical trial.

Despite decades of research, cognitive impairment remains a critical untreated symptom for many patients with schizophrenia. One way to accelerate the development of pro-cognitive therapies for schizophrenia is to evaluate compounds using biomarker approaches tailored to relevant neural mechanisms. While D1/D5 receptor (D1R/D5R) agonism has been extensively studied in neuroscience, its therapeutic potential for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia remains untapped. The Translational Neuroscience & Computational Evaluation of a D1R Partial Agonist for Schizophrenia (TRANSCENDS) clinical trial

A Review of Neuroimaging Studies on Working Memory Paradigms in Patients with Bipolar Disorder.

New brain technologies including neuroimaging studies are powerful means for providing new insights into clinical and cognitive neuroscience. Bipolar disorder is a severe chronic phasic mental disease characterized by various cognitive dysfunctions. Working memory is one prominent domain of cognitive impairment in bipolar disorder. Disruptions in working memory are observed even in euthymic bipolar patients which makes it a potential endophenotypic marker for the disorder. Finding such markers may help in providing firm neurobiological basis for psychiatric nosologies and symptomatic presentat

Despite the lack of progress in the curative treatment of mental illness, especially schizophrenia, the accumulation of neuroscience data over the past decade suggests the re-conceptualization of schizophrenia. With the advent of new biomarkers and cognitive tools, new neuroscience technologies such as functional dynamic connectivity and the identification of subtle clinical features; it is now possible to detect early stages at risk or prodromes of a first psychotic episode. Current concepts reconceptualizes schizophrenia as a neurodevelopmental disorder at early onset, with polygenic risk an

The NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) Initiative and Its Implications for Research on Personality Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We discuss the implications of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative for neuroscience research on personality disorder (PD). To organize our review, we construct a preliminary conceptual mapping of PD symptom criteria onto RDoC constructs. We then highlight recent neuroscience research, often built around concepts that correspond to RDoC elements, and discuss the findings in reference to the constructs we consider most pertinent to PD. RECENT FINDINGS: PD symptoms were strongly conceptually tied to RDoC constructs within the Social Processes domain, implicating bra

GenCPM: a toolbox for generalized connectome-based predictive modeling.

Understanding brain-behavior relationships and predicting cognitive and clinical outcomes from neuromarkers are central tasks in neuroscience. Connectome-based Predictive Modeling (CPM) has been widely adopted to predict behavioral traits from brain connectivity data; however, existing implementations are largely restricted to continuous outcomes, often overlook essential non-imaging covariates, and are difficult to apply in clinical or disease cohort settings. To address these limitations, we present GenCPM, a generalized CPM framework implemented in open-source R software. GenCPM extends tra

Labyrinthine and Neuroscientific Impact of Schizophrenia in the Criminal Justice System.

Schizophrenia, a complex neuropsychiatric condition, manifests with severe neurobiological and psychosocial symptoms, including psychosis, cognitive dysfunction, and social withdrawal. Neuroscience links these symptoms to synaptic malfunctions and neurotransmitter dysregulation, leading to a profound disconnection from reality. The disorder significantly affects cognitive, affective, and behavioral functions, causing considerable neuropsychological distress and functional impairments. The interplay of schizophrenia with the criminal justice system is complex, often exacerbating psychiatric sti

Callosal lesions and behavior: history and modern concepts.

Callosotomy has played a unique role in the treatment of epilepsy and in the understanding of human brain function. The pioneering work of Dejerine and Liepmann presenting the first findings of callosal lesion pathology at the turn of the 20th century was accepted but then quickly forgotten. Two schools resurrected the phoenix of callosal syndromes: Roger Sperry and Michael Gazzaniga leading in experimental neuroscience, and Norman Geschwind leading in clinical neurology. Callosotomy remains an effective technique to treat atonic, tonic, and tonic-clonic seizures, especially in patients with s

Bridging metabolic and computational accounts of efficient information processing.

Although abstract computational models in neuroscience omit biochemical detail, metabolic considerations still apply through abstract measures of efficient information processing. Against Haueis and Colaço's claim that such measures are too generic to discriminate among competing models, I argue that coding efficiency and related measures are commonly applied to evaluate and generate specific cognitive models.

Time Cognition: Entangled Neuronal Firing.

The neuroscience of time frequently focuses on either measuring short time intervals (sensory timing) or reproducing them (motor timing); during cognition, the two are integrated. New experiments using a combined sensory and motor timing task suggest that neuronal firing during the sensory and motor phases are linked.

Basic and functional effects of transcranial Electrical Stimulation (tES)-An introduction.

Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) has been gaining increased popularity in human neuroscience research during the last years. Among the emerging NIBS tools is transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), whose main modalities are transcranial direct, and alternating current stimulation (tDCS, tACS). In tES, a small current (usually less than 3mA) is delivered through the scalp. Depending on its shape, density, and duration, the applied current induces acute or long-lasting effects on excitability and activity of cerebral regions, and brain networks. tES is increasingly applied in different d

Frontal lobe neurology and the creative mind.

Concepts from cognitive neuroscience strongly suggest that the prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a crucial role in the cognitive functions necessary for creative thinking. Functional imaging studies have repeatedly demonstrated the involvement of PFC in creativity tasks. Patient studies have demonstrated that frontal damage due to focal lesions or neurodegenerative diseases are associated with impairments in various creativity tasks. However, against all odds, a series of clinical observations has reported the facilitation of artistic production in patients with neurodegenerative diseases affectin

No child left without a brain scan? Toward a pediatric neuroethics.

Brain research is yielding new information about the development of cognitive and behavioral traits in children--and how development can go off track. This is information parents, teachers, and others will use to help with problems from dyslexia to drug abuse. But with this information, often technical, come many questions. Will knowledge from brain scans be used to label children early in life? How will confidentiality be maintained as diverse providers, some of them commercial, compete for patients? Should government pay for scanning all children to identify not only potential problems but a
