This study conducted a preliminary examination on cognitive reserve (CR) as a modifier of symptom expression in subjects with autopsy-confirmed chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The sample included 25 former professional football players neuropathologically diagnosed with CTE stage III or IV. Next of kin interviews ascertained age at cognitive and behavioral/mood symptom onset and demographic/athletic characteristics. Years of education and occupational attainment defined CR. High occupational achievement predicted later age at cognitive (p=0.02) and behavioral/mood (p=0.02) onset. Educa

Much of the research on delaying the onset of symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has focused on pharmacotherapy, but environmental factors have also been acknowledged to play a significant role. Bilingualism may be one factor contributing to 'cognitive reserve' (CR) and therefore to a delay in symptom onset. If bilingualism is protective, then the brains of bilinguals should show greater atrophy in relevant areas, since their enhanced CR enables them to function at a higher level than would be predicted from their level of disease. We analyzed a number of linear measurements of brain atrophy

An elderly person who lives alone must often be autonomous and self-sufficient in daily living activities. We explored if living alone and marital status were associated with mild cognitive impairment and low cognitive reserve in a sample of Mexican women aged 60+ attending continuing education courses using a cross-sectional design. Objective cognitive functions were assessed using the MMSE and Blessed Dementia Scale. We administered the Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire. Independence skills were assessed with the Katz index and Lawton index. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used.

This study investigates how cognitive reserve (CR), developed through education and other cognitive activities, can slow cognitive dysfunction in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) patients by examining cerebral white matter fiber connectivity. We prospectively enrolled 125 patients with CSVD from the Department of Neurology between 2021 and 2023, including 69 patients with no cognitive impairment (nonCI) and 56 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Patients were divided into low cognitive reserve (LCR) and high cognitive reserve (HCR) subgroups based on the median of years of educa

Cognitive reserve, a component of resilience, may be conceptualized as the ability to overcome accumulating neuropathology and maintain healthy aging and function. However, research measuring and evaluating it in American Indians is needed. We recruited American Indians from 3 regional centers for longitudinal examinations (2010-13, n = 818; 2017-19, n = 403) including MRI, cognitive, clinical, and questionnaire data. We defined cognitive reserve by measuring the residual from individual regressions of cognitive tests over imaged brain volumes, adjusted for age and sex. Analyses examined three

The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) is being considered in the field of substance use disorder (SUD) by observing that there are individuals whose brain alterations are not related to the cognitive symptomatology they present. Our aims were to characterise the possible neuropsychological deficits in a sample of subjects with SUD compared to healthy controls and to determine whether the degree of CR is a mediator in the cognitive functioning of these patients. To perform these objectives, the study involved a sample of subjects with SUD in outpatient treatment and a healthy control group. A C

INTRODUCTION: Sex differences exist in Alzheimer's disease (AD) treatment response, but the role of sex in disease development and progression remains unclear.
METHODS: We performed multimodal analyses of AD biomarker-positive individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI; MCI n = 593, AD n = 270) and National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (MCI n = 436, AD n = 174). Baseline gray matter volume (GMV) was compared by sex. In ADNI, tau positron emission tomography burden and cerebrospinal fluid growth-associated protein 43 (G

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) refers to differences in the adaptability of cognitive processes that modify the impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology on cognitive performance. Currently there are no established blood-based biomarkers of CR in prodromal AD. In this study, we operationalize CR as memory reserve, defined as moderation (attenuation) of the CSF pTau181-memory association. DNA methylation (DNAm) integrates genetic and environmental influences and may capture biological processes that mitigate the impact of AD pathology on memory. We aimed to identify blood DNAm loci that

IntroductionCognitive reserve (CR) buffers against cognitive manifestations of neurodegenerative disease; little is known about CR and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS). We investigated CR moderation on the relationship between AD-related cortical changes and NPS.MethodsCross-sectional data from 455 participants in COMPASS-ND were analyzed. CR score (CRS) was operationalized from education, occupation, and mentally stimulating activities; NPS were assessed using the Mild Behavioral Impairment Checklist. Logistic regression modelled the relationship between hippocampal volume/entorhinal thickness

Cognitive Reserve (CR) is a theoretical construct that influences the onset and course of cognitive and structural changes that occur with aging and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). There is a paucity of research that examines the relationship of CR and brain volumes in amnestic (aMCI) and nonamnestic (naMCI) separately. This study is a retrospective chart review of MCI patients who underwent neuropsychological evaluation and brain MRI with NeuroReader™ (NR). NR is an FDA-cleared software that standardizes MRI volumes to a control sample. Classifications of aMCI and naMCI were based on Peterse

BACKGROUND: The cognitive reserve (CR) theory aims to explain the disparity often observed between brain damage and its clinical manifestation.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the CR theory in young-onset Alzheimer's disease (YOAD), a population not previously investigated in this context. The goal is to assess whether, similar to late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), a high CR delays diagnosis but may accelerate cognitive decline.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study including 72 patients (ages: 46-64) who were diagnosed with possible YOAD. They were followed up for three years, using the Mini-Men

In a recent study we showed that Cognitive Reserve (CR) did not significantly predict the neuropsychological outcomes of patients with severe Acquired Brain Injury (sABI), after a rehabilitation program. The present study aims to extend the previous results by assessing the role of CR on long-term neuropsychological outcomes of a subgroup (N = 27) of that same population. Patients took part in a telephone interview, where Tele-Global Examination Mental State (Tele-GEMS) and Glasgow Outcome Scale Extended (GOS-E) were administered. A linear regression model was conducted considering Tele-GEMS a

INTRODUCTION: The main objective of cognitive stimulation therapies is to promote the plasticity and learning ability that the individual is still in possession of in old age and to delay the clinical manifestations of neurodegenerative processes such as Alzheimer-type dementia. There are variables that can mediate the benefits of the intervention, such as the cognitive reserve.
AIM: To determine whether there is an interaction between the level of reserve and cognitive stimulation, and if it influences the cognitive performance of subjects with Alzheimer-type dementia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:

Background and Objectives: The optimal assessment of cognitive function, including the impact of education, is crucial in managing Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to evaluate the role of cognitive reserve (CR), represented by the metabolic status of regions of the cerebral cortex, to evaluate cognitive decline considering the educational attainment of patients with AD. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database, and selected 124 patients who underwent both baseline F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and F-18 florbetaben (FBB) positro

BACKGROUND: Social health is increasingly recognised as an important factor influencing cognitive ageing and experiences of dementia. Yet definitions and measurements remain inconsistent, and evidence on how social health relates to cognitive outcomes remains limited.
AIM AND METHODS: This narrative review presents the conceptual framework and synthesises the empirical findings from the Social Health and Reserve in the Dementia Patient Journey (SHARED) consortium, established to advance understanding of social health across the continuum from preclinical cognitive change to dementia, with a c

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve (CR) may be beneficial to the physical function of the elderly.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the association of CR proxies and composite CR capacity with physical function in older adults while considering age and sex.
METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 4,714 participants living in rural China (age≥60 years) who were dementia-free. Structural equation modeling was used to generate a composite CR score by integrating early-life education, midlife occupational complexity, and late-life mental activity and social support. The Short Phys

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with a high prevalence among the elderly and a huge personal and societal impact. Recent epidemiological studies have indicated that the incidence and age of onset of sporadic AD can be modified by lifestyle factors such as education, exercise, and (early) stress exposure. Early life adversity is known to promote cognitive decline at a later age and to accelerate aging, which are both primary risk factors for AD. In rodent models, exposure to 'negative' or 'positive' early life experiences was recently found to mo
