Human T lymphotropic virus type 1 is associated with some neurologic diseases, mainly human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. Human T lymphotropic virus type 2 has also been associated with similar cases of human T lymphotropic virus type 1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, but evidences for a definitive relationship are less clear. On the other hand, neurologic manifestations of HIV infection are quite common, affecting more than one third of patients in HIV clinics. Seroepidemiologic studies show that HIV-infected individuals ar

The disease course of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is often altered by existing or newly acquired coinfections. Treatment or prevention of these concomitant infections often improves the quality and duration of life of HIV-infected persons. The impact of helminth infections on infections with HIV is less clear. However, HIV is frequently most problematic in areas where helminth infections are common. In advance of the widespread distribution of drugs for elimination of lymphatic filariasis, we assessed the prevalence of active Wuchereria bancrofti infection among HIV-positive patients in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Persons with HIV are frequently coinfected with hepatitis C virus. We review recent data on the epidemiology and natural history of hepatitis C in HIV-infected persons.
RECENT FINDINGS: One-quarter of persons with HIV in Europe and the USA also have hepatitis C, but its prevalence in other areas is under 10%. Outbreaks of acute hepatitis C among men having sex with men have been described in Europe. Hepatitis C is the cause of more than three-quarters of liver-related deaths in HIV-seropositive individuals; however, liver-related morbidity and mortality are declining or sta

The declining incidence of AIDS-related opportunistic diseases among people with HIV infection has shifted the focus of clinical management to prevention and treatment of comorbidities such as chronic liver disease. The increased risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related advanced liver disease in people with HIV infection makes early HCV diagnosis a priority. To assess HCV prevalence and predictors of HIV/HCV coinfection, we have conducted a retrospective analysis of people enrolled in the CAESAR (Canada, Australia, Europe, South Africa) study, a multinational randomized placebo-controlled study

Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading global cause of infectious disease. Growing evidence suggests that TB significantly increases the risk of comorbidity in HIV+ patients, particularly acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Prognosis is often poor, highlighting the need for early prevention and intervention. However, exact mechanisms linking HIV-Mtb coinfection and stroke remain poorly understood. A review of articles from 2016 to 2026 was conducted to study the risk of ischemic stroke and treatment strategies in HIV-Mtb coinfection. Both HIV and Mtb can increase stroke risk, but pathogenesis of the coinfect

The mpox virus (MPXV) is a zoonotic pathogen that has been causing a worldwide pandemic outbreak since 2022, posing a significant threat to global public health security. During this outbreak, monkeypox has been more prevalent among immunocompromised individuals, particularly those infected with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). We report a case of a 21-year-old male patient with advanced AIDS in China who developed severe complications, including skin tissue infection, proctitis, and conjunctivitis, following monkeypox infection. Despite early aggressive treatment, the patient ultimately su

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In countries like Sudan, where several infectious diseases are prevalent, health care providers should not be satisfied with initial detection of a single pathogen and whenever it is feasible, they should investigate coinfections. Infections with high mortality or severe morbidity should be prioritized during the differential diagnosis particularly for diseases with similar clinical manifestations to reduce the death and disability rates. However, this requires substantial improvement in the diagnostic capacity.

BACKGROUND: Virus, particularly respiratory tract virus infection is likely to co-occur in children with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Study focusing on the association between common viruses coinfection and children with CAP is rare. We aimed to study the association between seven common viruses coinfection and clinical/laboratory indexes in children with CAP.
METHODS: Six hundred and eighty-four CAP cases from our hospital were enrolled retrospectively. Seven common viruses, including influenza A (FluA), influenza B (FluB), human parainfluenza virus (HPIV), Esptein-Barr virus (EBV), c

The co-occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) infection poses a significant global health challenge. Treatment of HIV and TB co-infection often necessitates combination therapy involving antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV and anti-TB medications, which introduces the potential for drug-drug interactions (DDIs). These interactions can significantly impact treatment outcomes, the efficacy of treatment, safety, and overall patient well-being. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the DDIs between anti-HIV and anti-TB drugs as well as potential a

BACKGROUND: We describe clinicoepidemiologic characteristics of mpox-chickenpox coinfection in Nigeria.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was performed of confirmed mpox cases in Nigeria from January 2022 to March 2023. Mpox and chickenpox were confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
RESULTS: Of 94 (60.0%) suspected cases, 56 had confirmed mpox, of whom 16 (28.6%) had chickenpox coinfection. The median age of confirmed mpox cases was 29 years (interquartile range, 20-37 years), 24 were men (60.7%), 6 (10.7%) were bisexual, and 5 (8.9%) died. Mpox-chickenpox-coinfect

OBJECTIVE: Syphilis and HIV coinfection is highly prevalent in South Africa, and both can cause neurological complications. We describe the clinical presentation and outcome of neurosyphilis in patients with and without HIV coinfection diagnosed at a tertiary facility, Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), in South Africa.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed folders of adults with positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test in 2018 and 2019, with follow-up data collected until 2022.
RESULTS: HIV-coinfection was identified in 35% of the 69 included patients. Pa

Recently, cases of rhinoorbital mucormycosis in people diagnosed with COVID-19 have been reported from India particularly. Diabetes mellitus though happens to be an independent risk factor both for severe COVID-19 and mucormycosis, administration of steroids is attributed as a precipitating factor for acquiring the comorbid condition. This opportunistic fungal infection is highly angioinvasive in nature because of which, clinical outcome of infection is invariably poor, especially with rhinocerebral or rhinoorbitocerebral variety of mucormycosis. However, effective management depends upon time

While the COVID-19 pandemic takes the world by storm, dengue-endemic regions risk developing a co-epidemic in COVID-19/dengue coinfection. With both infections as causes of high morbidity rates, the potentially fatal outcomes of coinfection are even greater, and several cases are emerging, severe and moderate, showing how common it may become in certain regions. The case reported here shows a 38-year-old male patient with high-grade fever, with complaints of nausea, joint, and muscle aches, all characteristic symptoms of COVID-19 and dengue. Initially suspected of being infected with COVID-19

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), a form of β-Coronavirus of the Coronaviridae family, has been causing infection among humans worldwide leading to a pandemic emergency. New strains of SARS-CoV-2 have been evolving unceasingly, presenting with various systemic and oral manifestations. There has been an increase in the incidence of secondary infection in the coronavirus infected individual either due to pre-existing factors or the virus by itself is causing such infection, which is still unclear. As it is already known, immunocompromised and uncontrolled diabetic pat

As immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly used, clinicians are more frequently encountering the side effects of these therapies. ICIs have been implicated in numerous adverse effects against healthy tissues. We present a case of a patient who developed treatment refractory checkpoint inhibitor colitis. Following colonoscopy, it was discovered that this patient had cytomegalovirus (CMV) coinfection. This case report highlights the importance of undertaking an appropriate assessment, including endoscopic and histologic investigation, of patients with presumed ICI colitis. Accuratel

We report a 50-year-old Thai woman with recent travel to Denmark who presented with acute high-grade fever, vomiting, and myalgia for 1 day. Initial laboratory results revealed leukopenia, elevated aspartate transaminase, and elevated alanine transaminase. Chest radiograph showed no pulmonary infiltration. Reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) of the nasopharyngeal swab detected SARS-CoV-2, and RT-PCR of the blood detected dengue virus serotype 2. COVID-19 with dengue fever co-infection was diagnosed. Her symptoms were improved with supportive treatment. Integration of clinical manifestations, hi

The H1N1 influenza infection usually coincides with the typical scrub typhus season in North India. This leads to diagnostic difficulties due to their similar and non-specific symptoms. We describe three patients with confirmed co-infection of pandemic (H1N1) influenza and scrub typhus who had presented with acute respiratory distress syndrome. A systematic review of database yielded one case of scrub typhus and H1N1 influenza co-infection reported from South Korea. Co-infection of influenza with tropical infections may not be uncommon in endemic countries and hence a high index of suspicion o

OBJECTIVES: International guidelines recommend Mycoplasma genitalium testing, preferably using an assay to detect macrolide resistance-associated mutations, for men presenting with non-gonococcal urethritis, but there is no specific guidance on such testing for men with gonococcal urethritis.
METHODS: This study aimed to estimate the proportion of men with gonococcal urethritis who have coinfection with M. genitalium through a retrospective analysis of cases of symptomatic urethral gonorrhoea at Western Sydney Sexual Health Centre in 2017 and 2018.
RESULTS: Fourteen of 184 (7.6%, 95% CI 3.7
