Climate change and human health: impacts, vulnerability and public health.

It is now widely accepted that climate change is occurring as a result of the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere arising from the combustion of fossil fuels. Climate change may affect health through a range of pathways, for example as a result of increased frequency and intensity of heat waves, reduction in cold related deaths, increased floods and droughts, changes in the distribution of vector-borne diseases and effects on the risk of disasters and malnutrition. The overall balance of effects on health is likely to be negative and populations in low-income countries are likel

The Association Between Heat Waves and Other Meteorological Parameters and Snakebites: Israel National Study.

BACKGROUND: Published annual estimates report a global burden of 2.5 million snakebite cases and >100,000 deaths. In Israel, envenomations are the third most frequent cause of poisonings that are of moderate to major clinical severity. Most studies focus on the clinical descriptions of snakebites in tropical climates, and we sought to investigate the association between snakebite frequency and meteorological parameters. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the seasonality of snakebites and evaluate the association between increasingly common heat waves and other meteorological parameters and s

Spatial changes in the distribution of malaria vectors during the past 5 decades in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Global warming and climate change affect various aspects of mankind, including public health. Anopheles mosquitoes are of Public Health importance and can be affected by global warming and other environmental variables. Here, we studied the distribution of Anopheles vectors of malaria in relation to environmental variables in Iran. METHODS: Long-term meteorological and entomological data of about 50 years in retrospect were collected and arranged in a geo-database and analyzed using ArcGIS ver. 9.3 and exported to SPSS ver. 20 for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Distribution maps

[Clinical characteristics, prevention and treatment difficulties, and management strategies for severe acute pancreatitis in cold regions].

The climate and lifestyle in cold regions make hyperlipidemia the primary etiology of pancreatitis in these areas. The disease exhibits a peak incidence in autumn and winter, with a tendency toward severe presentation, poor prognosis, and high recurrence. Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in cold regions is characterized by rapid progression of the early inflammatory response, early onset of organ failure with prominent cardiac and cerebral involvement, a complicated and refractory infection stage, and a long-term predisposition to post-pancreatitis diabetes mellitus. Establishing a regional pan

Preparing plants for improved cold tolerance by priming.

Cold is a major stressor, which limits plant growth and development in many parts of the world, especially in the temperate climate zones. A large number of experimental studies has demonstrated that not only acclimation and entrainment but also the experience of single short stress events of various abiotic or biotic kinds (priming stress) can improve the tolerance of plants to chilling temperatures. This process, called priming, depends on a stress "memory". It does not change cold sensitivity per se but beneficially modifies the response to cold and can last for days, months, or even longer

Impact of climate change on rheumatic diseases: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Although the impacts of climate change on human health conditions are reasonably well documented, specific influences on rheumatic diseases remain incompletely characterized. The goal of this scoping review was to better understand how climate change is impacting rheumatic diseases, either directly or indirectly, as well as how climate change affects the geographical distribution of infectious diseases with arthritogenic manifestations, which will impact rheumatic disease care. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Revi

The Pentatricopeptide Repeat Protein OsPPR7 Confers Cold Tolerance at the Booting Stage in Rice by Regulating ABA and ROS Homeostasis.

Cold stress at the booting stage severely disrupts pollen development and drastically reduces grain yield in rice. Uncovering the genetic basis of cold tolerance is essential for breeding resilient varieties. Here, we identified a cold‑sensitive mutant, csb1, from an EMS‑mutagenized population of the cold‑tolerant japonica variety MK1, which exhibits significantly impaired seed‑setting under cold stress. Genetic analysis indicated that the phenotype is controlled by a single recessive nuclear gene. Using MutMap, we mapped the causal locus to a 26.3-27.0 Mb interval on chromosome 8. Among candi

Neurosensory and vascular symptoms and clinical findings in the hands of Arctic open-pit miners in Sweden and Norway - a descriptive study.

This cross-sectional study aimed to describe exposure to cold climate and hand-arm vibration (HAV) as well as neurosensory and vascular symptoms and clinical findings among open-pit Arctic miners. It was based on data from questionnaires and physical examinations, including 177 men and 75 women from two open-pit mines in Sweden and Norway (response rate 54%). Working outdoors or in an unheated building or machine for at least two hours per day was reported by 44% and HAV exposure of the same duration by 10%. Neurosensory symptoms (e.g. reduced perception of touch) in the hands were reported by

Experimental manipulation of microbiota reduces host thermal tolerance and fitness under heat stress in a vertebrate ectotherm.

Identifying factors that influence how ectothermic animals respond physiologically to changing temperatures is of high importance given current threats of global climate change. Host-associated microbial communities impact animal physiology and have been shown to influence host thermal tolerance in invertebrate systems. However, the role of commensal microbiota in the thermal tolerance of ectothermic vertebrates is unknown. Here we show that experimentally manipulating the tadpole microbiome through environmental water sterilization reduces the host's acute thermal tolerance to both heat and c

Shewanella algae bacteraemia in a patient with a chronic ulcer after contact with seawater on vacation in Turkey: A case report from a German maximum-care hospital.

After seawater baths in Antalya, Turkey, a 55-year-old man suffered from Shewanella algae bacteraemia. Imported/travel-related S. algae infections should be kept in mind, also in usually rather cold geographical areas, as patterns of seawater-associated bacilli infections might change due to warming of seawater caused by climate change.

Effects of climate, latitude, and season on the incidence of Bell's palsy in the US Armed Forces, October 1997 to September 1999.

Bell's palsy is a relatively common disease characterized by the sudden onset of unilateral facial paralysis. Using a centralized surveillance system that contains demographic, military assignment, and medical encounter data of US military service members, the authors estimated rates, trends, and demographic correlates of risk of Bell's palsy during a 2-year period. Poisson regression was used to estimate the independent effects of climate, season, and latitude. From October 1997 to September 1999, there were 1,181 incident cases of Bell's palsy among US service members. The crude incidence ra

Physiological equivalent temperature and the risk of preterm birth in Tehran, Iran.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of climatic parameters-particularly the Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) index-on the risk of preterm birth (PB) in the city of Tehran. The present research is an ecological time-series study with daily data from March 2018 to March 2024. Data on preterm births, meteorological parameters from four synoptic stations, and air pollutants (PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO, O₃) from 13 air quality monitoring stations were collected. To analyze non-linear relationships and delayed effects, Distributed Lag Non-linear Models (DLNM) were used, cont

Dissimilar use of an external heat source for thermoregulation by shrews from different geographic regions.

Ambient temperature has a substantial influence on the thermoregulation costs of small mammals due to their high surface-to-volume ratio. Shrews are among the smallest of mammals and have adopted different behavioral and physiological strategies to deal with cold temperatures. In this study, we assessed the use of an external heat source in the thermoregulatory strategy of two Crocidurinae species, Crocidura russula and C. suaveolens, and one Soricinae species, Sorex araneus. Crocidura russula inhabits western Europe and is better adapted to a Mediterranean climate; C. suaveolens inhabits cent

Influence of climate change on livestock diseases occurrence in Burkina faso, West Africa.

Climate change poses a significant threat to livestock production and animal health globally, with particular implications for Burkina Faso. This study explores the links between climate patterns and the resurgence of five major livestock diseases in Burkina Faso, using climatic records from 1961 to 2020 and veterinary clinical data from 2003 to 2019 collected across the Sahel, Sudan-sahel and Sudan climatic zones. The annual and seasonal climate trends were compared over two climatological periods (1961-1990 and 1991-2020) using two independent t-test. It is was found significant changes in r

Super-Cooling Point and Effects of Temperature, Moisture, and Habitat on Overwintering Survival of the Threatened American Burying Beetle Nicrophorus americanus.

Most species within the genus Nicrophorus (Staphylinidae: Silphinae: Necrophorini) overwinter as adults during cold months. However, species that were once widely distributed, such as the American burying beetle, Nicrophorus americanus Olivier, experience different overwintering conditions, altered by increasing climate variability, making cold periods less predictable. In this study, we determined the mean super-cooling point of Oklahoma N. americanus to be -1.98 °C, a value that suggests that beetles rely on behavioral avoidance of freezing soils rather than on physiological freeze tolerance

Sensitization to domestic mites in a cold temperate region.

Factors favoring sensitization to house dust mites (HDM) were studied in a cold, temperate climate in northern Sweden. Sixty-five children previously found to react positively to a skin prick test (SPT) to HDM were included. The SPT to HDM was repeated, and serum IgE antibodies to D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae were determined. HDM, Euroglyphus maynei, Tarsonemus, or storage mites occurred in mattress dust samples from 23 of the 65 homes, and in 10 homes more than 100 HDM/g of mattress dust were found. Mites were more prevalent in mattress dust from the basement and ground levels than from th
