Application of spinosad increases the susceptibility of insecticide-resistant Alphitobius diaperinus (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) to pyrethroids.

The effect of spinosad exposure on the susceptibility of pyrethroid- and organophosphate-resistant populations of lesser mealworm, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), to insecticides was investigated in broiler house farm and laboratory studies. A field pyrethroid- and organophosphate-resistant population showed a 3.6-fold increase in susceptibility to gamma-cyhalothrin following spinosad treatment. Overall, cyfluthrin- and fenitrothion-resistant field populations were more susceptible to these insecticides following spinosad treatments, but populations that were not r

Evidence of reinforcement of premating isolation between two species of the genus Ochthebius (Coleoptera: Hydraenidae).

The increase in premating reproductive isolation between recently diverged and potentially interbreeding taxa resulting from selection against hybridization (reinforcement) is one of the most contentious issues in evolutionary biology. After many years of debate, its plausibility under various conditions has been shown by theoretical studies and some cases have been documented. At present, interest is arising about the frequency and importance of reinforcement in nature. Ochthebius quadricollis and Ochthebius sp. A are two hydraenid beetles inhabiting marine rock pools in the Mediterranean bas

Damage loss assessment and control of the cereal leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in winter wheat.

Cereal leaf beetle, Oulema melanopus (L.), invaded northern Alabama and Georgia more than a decade ago and since has become an economic pest of winter wheat and other cereal crops in the southeastern United States. A series of trials was conducted beginning in 1995 to determine optimal rate and timing of applications of selected foliar insecticides for managing cereal leaf beetle in soft red winter wheat. These trials, cage studies with larvae, and a manual defoliation experiment were used to provide information on cereal leafbeetle yield loss relationships and to develop economic decision rul

THE EVOLUTION OF HOST-PLANT USE AND SEQUESTRATION IN THE LEAF BEETLE GENUS PHRATORA (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE).

Leaf beetles in the genus Phratora differ in host plant use and in the chemical composition of their larval defensive secretion. Most species specialize on either poplars or willows (family Salicaceae), but two species feed on birch (family Betulaceae). Phratora vitellinae utilizes salicylates from the host plant to produce its larval secretion, which contains salicylaldehyde, while other Phratora species produce an autogenous secretion. To reconstruct the evolutionary history of host plant use and the larval secretion chemistry in this genus, we sequenced 1383 base pairs of the mt cytochrome

[Effect of parasitic protozoa on the physiological state of the body of the confused flour beetle (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)].

Studies were conducted of diseases of Tribolium destructor and T. confusum caused by parasites of the fat body, microsporidians of Nosema whitei and coccidians of Adelina tribolii. The infection of larvae of tenebrionid beetles with microsporidians and coccidians results in substantial changes in the metabolism of insects-hosts (respiratory metabolism is disturbed and activity of tissue catalase is reduced). Physiological characteristics of uninfected larvae of T. confusum and T. destructor differ considerably. In T. destructor the disease is more acute in its character and is accompanied by m

Divergent range dynamics among non-native Coleoptera: climate drivers and poleward expansion in multiple species.

INTRODUCTION: The expansion and contraction of species ranges result from population dynamics, species interactions, and environmental responses. As temperatures rise at high latitudes, some temperate species may be shifting poleward. As non-native species expand in range they threaten native biodiversity and disrupt ecosystem functioning, making range dynamics critical to understand for effective control programs. METHODS: This study examined the dynamics of the southern geographic limit of non-native Coleoptera species in Chile. Using occurrence data from 25 species recorded between 2007 to

Effect of Aphis gossypii-damaged Alternanthera philoxeroides on the biocontrol beetle Agasicles hygrophila (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

INTRODUCTION: Agasicles hygrophila is a classical biocontrol agent widely used against the invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides. However, cotton aphid (CA) Aphis gossypii damage can alter host plant traits and reduce the fitness of A. hygrophila. The mechanisms underlying how aphid-damaged plant changes affect the behavior and physiological performance of this biocontrol agent remain unknown. METHODS: We investigated the effects of CA-damaged alligatorweed on the development, nutritional metabolism, oxidative defense, digestive physiology, and host-selection behavior of A. hygrophila. La

Scaling Relationships and Sexual Size Dimorphism Among the Body Parts of Holotrichia oblita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Sexual dimorphism is common among insects. However, whether dimorphism influences the wing loading (i.e., body mass per unit wing area) and scaling relationships among body parts in beetles has seldom been explored. Here, we examined Holotrichia oblita (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) gender differences in body mass, total hind wing area, leg length, and wing loading, and quantified the scaling relationships between body mass and body length, between head-and-prothorax mass and non-head-and-prothorax mass, and between total elytron mass and total hind wing area. Results revealed that (i) females exh

Diagrammatical scale to quantify herbivory severity on feijoa leaf caused by Paraulaca dives (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

The aims of this work were to characterize the damage caused by Paraulaca dives in feijoa (Acca sellowiana) and develop a diagrammatic scale to evaluate the severity of herbivory. The evaluations were carried out in a feijoa progenies orchard with eight-year-old. The beetles caused damage mainly on leaves, from October to December (spring season). The distribution of beetles in the orchard occurred randomly, not following a defined pattern of incidence. The diagrammatic scale of herbivory severity was represented by seven levels (1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 15%, 32%, and 55% of the leaf area consumed). Th

Contrasting Volatilomes of Livestock Dung Drive Preference of the Dung Beetle Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae).

Volatile cues can play a significant role in the location and discrimination of food resources by insects. Dung beetles have been reported to discriminate among dung types produced by different species, thereby exhibiting behavioral preferences. However, the role of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in dung localization and preference remains largely unexplored in dung beetles. Here we performed several studies: firstly, cage olfactometer bioassays were performed to evaluate the behavioral responses of Bubas bison (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) to VOCs emanating from fresh horse, sheep, and cattle

Profound head modifications in Claviger testaceus (Pselaphinae, Staphylinidae, Coleoptera) facilitate integration into communities of ants.

Clavigeritae is a group of obligate myrmecophiles of the rove beetle subfamily Pselaphinae (Staphylinidae). Some are blind and wingless, and all are believed to depend on ant hosts through feeding by trophallaxis. Phylogenetic hypotheses suggest that their ancestors, as are most pselaphines today, were free-living predators. Morphological alterations required to transform such beetles into extreme myrmecophiles were poorly understood. By studying the cephalic morphology of Claviger testaceus, we demonstrate that profound changes in all mouthpart components took place during this process, with

Boxwood Borer Heterobostrychus brunneus (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infesting Dried Cassava: A Current Record from Southern Ethiopia.

Insect specimens of adult beetles and larvae of 7-9 and 9-10 mm length, respectively were collected from infested dry cassava at two locations from multiple stores in southern Ethiopia. The specimens were identified as Heterobostrychus brunneus (Murray, 1867) commonly known as boxwood borer and auger beetle. The study presents a current record of H. brunneus in Ethiopia, particularly in the context of infesting food products. Additionally, a wide geographical distribution of the pest was reviewed and presented in this article. Current evidence suggests that H. brunneus is a serious pest of for

Population Development of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in Landrace Bean Varieties Occurring in Southwestern Amazonia.

The common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris (L.), is one of the most important sources of protein worldwide, and Latin America is one of the recognized centers of diversity of this species. However, storage of this product after harvest is not feasible because of bruchid attacks. This study determined the accumulated normalized rate of emergence and the daily emergence rate of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae:Bruchinae) in five landrace varieties of common bean (BRL 01, SNA 01, RDR 01, RBC 01, and RBC 13) that occurin southwestern Amazonia. (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one is a major pheromone component of Anelaphus inflaticollis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae).

We report the identification and field bioassays of a major component of the male-produced aggregation pheromone of Anelaphus inflaticollis Chemsak, an uncommon desert cerambycine beetle. Male A. inflaticollis produced a sex-specific blend of components that included (R)-3-hydroxyhexan-2-one, (S)-2-hydroxyhexan-3-one, 2,3-hexanedione, and (2R,3R)- and (2R,3S)-2,3-hexanediols.
