A 13-year-old boy died suddenly at night while asleep. A colloid cyst filled the third ventricle, obstructed the flow of cerebral spinal fluid, and led to prominent hydrocephalus. Acute ventricular distension with brain herniation resulted in death, whereas repeated previous episodes had led to cerebral compression and edema. Complaints included only episodic headache in the month prior to death. His pediatrician prescribed a course of Imitrex (sumatriptan) because of lack of neurologic signs or other symptoms and a family history of migraine headaches. The headaches persisted, however, and wi

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are described in middle-aged twin brothers. One of them presented with recurrent attacks of headache. In this patient the cyst had reached a size large enough to obstruct the cerebrospinal fluid pathway, resulting in hydrocephalus. The twin brother, although asymptomatic, was suspected of the anomaly and investigated because of the similarity of his ocular signs. The diagnosis was confirmed by computerized tomography in both the patient and his brother. The latter proved to have a smaller colloid cyst situated anteriorly in the third ventricle with no obstr

Primary actinomycoma of the third ventricle has been reported to be a very rare form of central nervous system actinomycosis. Others have demonstrated actinomycotic-like colonies in colloid cysts of the third ventricle. We have confirmed these structures (HLS) in five colloid cysts and have demonstrated by various histochemical stains that they consist of desoxyribose nucleic acid, base protein and phospholipid. Ultrastructurally, they consist of amorphous to granular electron dense material, probably deposited on a lamellar substructure. On the basis of the available information, we believe t

INTRODUCTION: Colloid cysts are rare cystic tumors commonly located in the third ventricle. Extraventricular locations are rare, and only very few cases have been reported in the literature. These include the fourth ventricle, sellar region, cerebral hemisphere, cerebellum, brainstem, and velum interpositum. We are reporting a case of a giant right hemispheric colloid cyst.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 75-year-old gentleman presented with complaints of difficulty in walking, swaying, and mild memory disturbances with subtle left pyramidal type of weakness. The imaging studies revealed a giant cystic l

The ventricular migration of vitreous silicone oil (SiO) is rare and can easily be mistaken for intraventricular hemorrhage or a ruptured colloid cyst. We report here the case of an adult male who was misdiagnosed with a ruptured colloid cyst and was subsequently found to have ventricular migration of vitreous SiO. A 57-year-old male presented unresponsive following a respiratory arrest and underwent a head computed tomography (CT) scan that demonstrated multiple ovoid hyperdensities in the ventricular system, which was concerning for a ruptured colloid cyst. He was transferred to our institut

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are an unusual differential diagnosis for lesions in the lateral ventricles. Microsurgery is usually recommended for the treatment of giant colloid cysts. This case is the largest reported colloid cyst in this unusual location treated with an endoscope.
OBSERVATIONS: A 39-year-old woman with a history of pulsing headaches presented with nausea, vomiting, vision blurring, and paresthesia of the left leg. On the brain computed tomography, a huge, well-defined homogeneous hyperdense intraventricular lesion with hydrocephalus was observed. Magnetic resonance imaging show

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are benign tumors usually located on the roof of the third ventricle. Cyst removal is the treatment of choice. It can be accomplished microsurgically through a transcortical- or transcallosal approach, or endoscopically. There is a lack of consensus regarding the best strategy for cyst removal. One of the challenges of the traditional endoscopic technique is dealing with the cyst content density. Hyperdensity on computed tomography scan and low signal on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cyst are correlated with high viscosity cystic content.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to reclassify the "anatomic risk zones of colloid cysts" as proposed by Beaumont et al, by proposing newer landmarks, and to assess predictive value for the risk of occurrence of hydrocephalus with the new classification compared with the old.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 122 cases of colloid cyst of third ventricle were categorized into zones 1, 2, or 3 based on Beaumont's classification (old zone) and our classification (new zone) based on radiologic images. We attempted to recategorize these zones by assigning new anatomic landmarks. The difference in zonal distr

Metastatic lesions to the choroid plexus, although far less common than colloid cysts, can present very similarly both symptomatically and radiographically. Choroid plexus metastases are most common in the lateral ventricles, however, when they occur in the third and fourth ventricles they may cause obstructive hydrocephalus typical of a colloid cyst lesion. Renal cell carcinoma is the most common primary cancer, but many rare primaries have been reported. When patients are presenting with symptoms typical of colloid cysts it is important to consider past oncological history and if past medica

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are rare developmental lesions, accounting for approximately 1% of intracranial tumors. Often, these benign lesions are asymptomatic, but they are associated with significant mortality as a result of acute hydrocephalus. This mortality in patients with vague or no symptoms dictates a need for better understanding of the etiology of colloid cysts to expedite diagnosis and management. We present a case of monozygotic twins with colloid cysts to propose a genetic etiology for colloid cyst.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Previously healthy male monozygotic twins presented 4 years apa

BACKGROUND: Third ventricle cavernous malformations (CMs) associated with ventriculomegaly and obstructive hydrocephalus are quite rare in patients. Preoperative surgical planning can be challenging due to the lesion's non-specific appearance on CT and magnetic resonance imaging that can mimic other intraventricular pathologies, such as a colloid cyst. Management of these lesions can be varied in the setting of obstructive hydrocephalus.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient is a 78-year-old woman who first presented to her primary care provider with balance difficulties and inability to ambulate on

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts (CCs) are rarely found in the sellar-suprasellar region. Differential diagnosis of CCs is more challenging in this region because many other cystic lesions may locate or invade sellar or suprasellar structures. We present a large and unusual case of sellar-suprasellar CC with extension into the suprasellar, interpeduncular, and prepontine cisterns. This is the first case of sellar-suprasellar CC treated with an endoscopic transsphenoidal approach.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are congenital benign tumors accounting for 0.2-2% of all intracranial neoplasms but representing 15-20% of all intraventricular masses. Emergency Physicians are more likely than any other group to encounter patients with a colloid cyst, a rare but life-threatening condition. The most common presenting complaint is severe episodic attacks of headache in a frontal location with associated nausea and vomiting.
OBJECTIVES: To describe a rare but potentially life-threatening cause of headache so that clinicians will rapidly recognize the significance of the condition and

BACKGROUND: Colloid cyst of the third ventricle is a relatively rare intracranial tumor. It generates tremendous interest for the neurosurgeon because of its benign nature, deep location, and an excellent prognosis when diagnosed early and excised.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis of 105 cases of third ventricle colloid cyst treated between 1967 to 1998 was conducted. The clinical presentation, radiological findings, different surgical approaches, and outcome were analyzed. The transcallosal and transcortical-transventricular approaches were predominantly used. The authors report on a case of solitary neurocysticercosis located in the anterior third ventricle of a 21-year-old Hispanic man who presented with progressive headache, nausea, and mental decline. The appearance of the lesion on computerized tomography and magnetic resonance studies was typical of that of a colloid cyst. which was the presumptive preoperative diagnosis. A transcortical-transventricular microsurgical approach was used, and inspection of the anterior third ventricle via the ipsilateral foramen of Monro revealed no lesion. Inspection of the floor of the ipsilateral lateral vent

This retrospective study evaluates the diagnostic role of CT and MRI in identifying colloid cysts and assessing their association with hydrocephalus. Data from 30 patients diagnosed with third ventricular colloid cysts at Jagadguru Jayadeva Murugarajendra Medical College, Davangere, between 2017 and 2024 were reviewed. Imaging characteristics, including cyst size, location, and potential complications such as hydrocephalus, were analyzed. Colloid cysts larger than 10 mm, located in high-risk regions, and observed in younger patients were more likely to develop complications, including acute hy

BACKGROUND: A minimally invasive option of colloid cyst surgical treatment is endoscopic resection, well validated in various reports and clinical practice. A rare complication of the surgical treatment, previously reported only once in literature, is the entrapment of the lateral ventricle. In this study we aim to outline our experience in the management of this occurrence, hypothesizing possible etiopathogenetic causes.
METHODS: Among patients who underwent neuroendoscopic resection for a colloid cysts at our Institution between 2013 and 2022, cases who developed a postoperative lateral ven

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Colloid cysts are uncommon benign lesions. There is a lack of consensus regarding the preferred surgical strategy for colloid cyst resection; the technique with the optimal rates of remission, recurrence, mortality, and complications is debatable.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine surgical outcomes, we performed a systematic review of the published literature on Colloid cysts. Eligible studies (n = 63) with a prospective or retrospective evaluation of endoscopic or microscopic resection of third ventricle colloid cysts were included, which contained data describing exten

Eight patients with colloid cysts of the third ventricle were examined with CT and MR. In six, surgical resection was performed and the material was subjected to histologic evaluation; the concentrations of trace elements were determined by particle-induced X-ray emission. Stereotaxic aspiration was performed in two. The investigation showed that colloid cysts are often iso- or hypodense relative to brain on CT (5/8), but sometimes have a center of increased density. Increased density did not correlate with increased concentration of calcium or other metals but did correlate with high choleste
