Two-Dimensional Colloidal Nanocrystals.

In this paper, we review recent progress on colloidal growth of 2D nanocrystals. We identify the four main sources of anisotropy which lead to the formation of plate- and sheet-like colloidal nanomaterials. Defect-induced anisotropy is a growth method which relies on the presence of topological defects at the nanoscale to induce 2D shapes objects. Such a method is particularly important in the growth of metallic nano-objects. Another way to induce anisotropy is based on ligand engineering. The availability of some nanocrystal facets can be tuned by selectively covering the surface with ligands

Colloid solutions for fluid resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Colloids are widely used in the replacement of fluid volume. However, doubts remain as to which colloid is best. Different colloids vary in their molecular weight and therefore in the length of time they remain in the circulatory system. Because of this, and their other characteristics, they may differ in their safety and efficacy. OBJECTIVES: To compare the effects of different colloid solutions in patients thought to need volume replacement. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Injuries Specialised Register (searched 1 December 2011), the Cochrane Central Register of Contro

Colloid cyst: a case report.

Colloid cysts are a rare clinical finding with a unique clinical presentation: non-specific paroxysmal headaches. The current recommended treatment is microsurgery, which poses the greatest risk to the patient but allows complete removal of the cyst to prevent recurrence. A 41-year old man presented with a colloid cyst located in the foramen of Monro causing obstructive hydrocephalus. He had paroxysmal headaches and memory and personality changes. Transcortical transventricle microsurgery was performed to remove the entire cyst. A temporary shunt was placed to prevent post-operative hydrocepha

Voluven, a new colloid solution.

Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.4 (Voluven, Fresenius/Hospira, Germany) is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of hypovolemia. As the Voluven molecule is smaller than those of other available hydroxyethyl starch products, it is associated with less plasma accumulation and can be safely used in patients with renal impairment. Previous studies have demonstrated that Voluven has comparable effects on volume expansion and hemodynamics as other available HES products. Voluven is also associated with fewer effects on coagulation and may be an acceptable alternative to albumin for volume expa

Endoscopic approach to colloid cysts.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to discuss the variations in the morbid anatomy of colloid cysts with its impact on the choice of endoscopic approach through a standard Kocher's burr hole. METHODS: This study was conducted on 18 patients between 1996 and 2006. All patients were operated through a single burr hole at Kocher's point using a rigid endoscope with a single working channel. The anatomical variations of the cyst and the foramen of Monro dictated the use of the transforaminal approach, the transseptal interforniceal approach or both. RESULTS: There were no mortalities or signifi

Unilateral colloid milium of the arm.

We describe a case of colloid milium limited to the left arm. To the best of our knowledge, only 2 other cases of unilateral colloid milium have been reported. All of these patients had occupational UV light exposure patterns that could account for this unique distribution.

Colloid cyst and epidermoid cyst.

BACKGROUND: Viral hemorrhagic fevers are caused by viruses from four viral families and develop diseases with high fatality rates. However, no commercial diagnostic assay for these pathogens is available. FINDINGS: We developed real-time RT-PCR assays for viruses Ebola, Marburg, Lassa, Guanarito, Machupo, Junin, Sabiá, Seoul, Puumala, Hantaan, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus and Rift Valley fever virus. The assays were optimized for identical reaction conditions and can be performed using several types of real-time PCR instruments, both capillary and plate, including a portable Ruggediz

Endoscopic management of colloid cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Several surgical approaches have been proposed for the treatment of colloid cysts, which still remains controversial. The most recent technique used is endoscopy. By its nature, endoscopy cannot offer complete removal, as compared to microsurgical techniques, but can do more than puncture. To evaluate the usefulness of endoscopy for colloid cyst surgery, a series of 15 patients who were operated on for colloid cysts under endoscopic control since 1994 was reviewed. METHODS: The presenting symptoms of our patients (10 men and 5 women) were intermittent headache (10 patients), nausea

Colloidal systems for tumor targeting.

The potential and limitations of targeted delivery of anticancer agents with colloidal particulate carriers is the subject of this contribution. Because over the years liposomes have gained the most attention as carrier system in the category of colloidal carrier systems, this paper focuses on the utility of the liposomal system for tumor targeting. It is imperative that an intended therapeutic application of liposomes should be well matched with the liposome behavior in vivo. Therefore, the in vivo fate of the first-generation liposomes and the more recently developed second-generation liposo

Crystalloid or colloid: does it matter?

The modern version of the crystalloid-colloid debate has continued for more than 25 years, and a current appraisal of the debate is presented here. Although the effect of crystalloids and colloids on intravascular volume is important, their effect on interstitial fluid volume after hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock is central to the debate. If reduced, crystalloids are appropriate as part of the resuscitation regime; if increased, colloid therapy is more logical. A brief review of the distribution of crystalloids and currently used colloids (albumin, polygeline, dextran 70, and hydroxyethyl sta

Colloid and crystalloid fluid resuscitation.

The choice of colloid or crystalloid solutions for fluid resuscitation of critically ill patients remains controversial. Marked reduction of extracellular water is considered an important defect in shock by proponents of crystalloid fluid therapy. Large volumes of crystalloid replenish this extracellular deficit. Hypovolemia is regarded as the primary defect in shock by those favoring colloid fluid therapy. Colloidal fluids promptly restore plasma volume and reestablish hemodynamic stability with substantially lesser volumes of fluid. However, only 8% of infused water and less than 25% of infu

Colloids in lubrication: Development of amphiphiles from molecular structure to tribological performance.

Lubrication is often applied at interfaces where friction occurs upon relative motion. In boundary lubrication regimes, amphiphilic lubricant additives spontaneously adsorb onto the solid/liquid interfaces, tailoring surface properties and decisively dictating macroscopic lubrication performance. This process is essential for the proper functioning of machinery and for prolonging its service life. The molecular structure of amphiphilic compounds is a key determinant of their interfacial adsorption behavior, which directly influences lubrication quality. Recent advances in characterization tech

Concurrent Formation of Ice Network within Mineral Colloids with Suppressed Volume Expansion.

The freezing behaviors of water are one of the most critical factors that define the formats of life and the landscapes on Earth. The current methods for regulating the freezing behaviors mainly rely on ice-structuring proteins or nanomaterials to hinder the conversion of water into crystalline ice (Ih) under low temperatures. Here we report that the presence of minuscule mineral particles can significantly suppress the volume expansion of water upon freezing into ice. In particular, colloidal precipitates of calcite, a primary mineral accounting for ∼4 wt % of the Earth's crust and the most a

Mapping Boolean logic with protein-based colloids: A microelectrode array (MEA) approach.

Neuromorphic and unconventional computing aim to replicate the adaptive, parallel, and energy-efficient information processing of biological systems. Achieving this functionality with sustainable, biocompatible materials remains a key challenge. Here, we demonstrate a protein-based colloidal computing platform using egg albumen interfaced with a microelectrode array (MEA) that simultaneously exhibits memory-like behaviours and synaptic-like potentiation and depression. Here, we demonstrate that these properties can be used to perform a wide range of Boolean operations that are spatially distri
