Intrauterine growth restricted piglets defined by their head shape ingest insufficient amounts of colostrum.

The increasing litter sizes of modern pig breeds have led to a significant number of piglets that are born undersized ("small" piglets) and some have been exposed to different degrees of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). The aim of this study was to investigate the physiology and capability to ingest colostrum of these small piglets, suffering from various degrees of IUGR, to see if their IUGR score could be a useful tool for easy identification of piglets in need of intervention in the colostrum period. Piglets were classified at birth based on head morphology. Piglets were classified e

Cellular composition including lymphocyte subsets in preterm and full term human colostrum and milk.

The cellular composition of colostrum (within 72 hours post partum) and mature milk samples (5th-7th day post partum) from 20 mothers delivering preterm babies and 20 mothers delivering full term babies was examined. Lymphocyte subsets including T cells, B cells, T4 and T8 cells were quantitated by indirect immunoperoxidase staining using specific monoclonal antibodies. The mean total cell count in preterm colostrum (9,338/mm3) was significantly higher than in full term colostrum (5,594/mm3). Similarly, counts for macrophages, neutrophils and lymphocytes were significantly higher in preterm co

Maternal supplementation with Lactobacillus reuteri enhances colostrum sIgA secretion and immune function of offspring.

Specific maternal gut microbiota can activate immune responses in the gut-associated lymphoid tissues, driving the secretion of maternal immunoglobulins into the milk and facilitating the passive immunity of the offspring via the entero-mammary axis. This study aims to investigate the distinct gut microbiota profiles between large white (LW) sows and Ningxiang (NX) sows, and to explore probiotic for maternal and offspring intestinal health. Lactobacillus reuteri (LR) was significantly enriched in the feces of NX sows and positively correlated with colostral immunoglobulin (Ig) levels, specific

Graded selenium supplementation restructures yak colostrum composition and metabolomic organization under high-altitude conditions.

Selenium (Se) plays crucial roles in redox regulation and metabolic homeostasis, yet its effects on yak colostrum remain poorly understood. This study evaluated graded dietary Se supplementation during the periparturient period on colostrum composition, maternal physiological status, and metabolomic profiles in high-altitude yaks. Thirty pregnant yaks received 0, 0.3, or 0.6 mg Se/kg dry matter. Among animals with normal placental expulsion (n = 6/group), high Se supplementation increased milk fat, protein, lactose, solids-not-fat, and immunoglobulin concentrations. Untargeted metabolomics det

Exosomes derived from colostrum and mature human breast milk protect against experimental necrotizing enterocolitis.

OBJECTIVE: Human milk-derived exosomes can protect intestinal organoids from lipopolysaccharide induced injury. The aim of this study is to investigate effects of exosomes derived from different periods of lactation on intestinal injury caused by experimental necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). METHODS: Colostrum and mature milk from healthy lactating human mothers were collected and isolated exosomes using serial ultracentrifugation and filtration. NEC was induced in mice pups by hypoxia, gavage of feeding of formula, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration between postnatal days 5 and 9. B

Physiological traits of newborn piglets associated with colostrum intake, neonatal survival and preweaning growth.

Colostrum intake, which is critical for piglet survival after birth and growth up to weaning, greatly depends on piglet weight and vitality at birth. Our aim was to identify a set of biological variables explaining individual variations in colostrum intake, preweaning growth and risk of dying. Farrowing traits, morphological traits and colostrum intake were determined for 504 piglets born alive from 37 Landrace × Large White sows. A subset of 203 of these piglets was used to measure plasma neonatal concentrations of metabolites and hormones in blood collected from the umbilical cord at birth.

Human colostrum action against Giardia lamblia infection influenced by hormones and advanced maternal age.

Children are more susceptible to Giardia lamblia infection. Cells and hormones contained in human colostrum have an immunoprotective action against giardiasis, but the effects of advanced maternal age on these components are poorly understood. This study analyzed the colostrum of older women to determine melatonin and cortisol levels besides the participation of these hormones on the functional activity of phagocytes against G. lamblia. Colostrum samples were collected from younger (18 to 35 years old) and older (over 36 years old) lactating women. Colostrum samples were subjected to melatonin

Successful hyperimmune bovine colostrum treatment of Savanna monitors (Varanus exanthematicus) infected with Cryptosporidium sp.

Therapy based on the protective passive immunity of hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) (raised against Cryptosporidium parvum in cows) was applied to 4 Savanna monitors (Varanus exanthematicus) with gastric Cryptosporidium sp. infections. All lizards were moderately emaciated, and their fecal and gastric lavage samples contained moderate numbers of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts. The first 3 of 7 gastric HBC treatments at 1-wk interval each decreased the numbers of oocysts in the fecal and gastric samples to undetectable levels. Neither feces nor lavages of the HBC-treated lizards contained Crypt

Hyperimmune bovine colostrum treatment of moribund Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) infected with Cryptosporidium sp.

Therapy based on the protective passive immunity of hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC) was applied to 12 moribund Leopard geckos (Eublepharis macularius) infected with Cryptosporidium sp. The geckos were lethargic and moderately to severely emaciated, weighing on average 36% of the baseline body weight value. Seven gastric HBC treatments at 1-week intervals each decreased the relative output of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts and the prevalence of oocyst-positive fecal specimens. Histologically, after 8 weeks of therapy, seven out of 12 geckos had only single developmental stages of Cryptosporidiu

Serologic responses of young colostrum fed dairy calves to antigens of Pasteurella haemolytica A1.

The potential and limitations of early calfhood vaccination to induce active immunity to Pasteurella haemolytica A1 in conventional colostrum fed calves were investigated. Holstein dairy calves (n = 29) were vaccinated at 2 and 4 weeks of age, or at 6 and 8 weeks of age with a commercial culture supernatant vaccine (Presponse, Langford Inc., Guelph, Ont., Canada), or remained unvaccinated as controls. Serum antibody titres were measured using an indirect bacterial agglutination assay, a leukotoxin neutralization assay, and enzyme immunoassays for antibodies of the IgM, IgG1, and IgG2 isotypes

Enhancement of resistance to Cryptosporidium parvum by pooled bovine colostrum during murine retroviral infection.

The therapeutic efficacy of pooled bovine colostrum for the control of cryptosporidiosis was investigated during murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in female C57Bl/6 mice. Mice were infected with LP-BM5 murine leukemia retrovirus for four months and then inoculated with Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts. Persistent cryptosporidiosis was established in all retrovirus immunosuppressed mice, while control mice were refractory to infection. Parasite colonization of intestinal villi was significantly (P < 0.05) reduced in immunosuppressed animals that received dietary supplemental pooled bovine

Treatment of diarrhoea in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients with immunoglobulins from bovine colostrum.

Diarrhoea and weight loss are found in more than 50% of patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). In some patients the symptoms can be very severe, leading to death even in the absence of opportunistic infections. In 30% of these patients, enteric pathogens cannot be identified, and approximately only half of the identifiable aetiologic agents of diarrhoea in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were treatable with antibiotics. Immunoglobulins from bovine colostrum (Lactobin, Biotest, Dreieich, FRG) contain high titers of antibodies against a wide ra

Clone-specific immune colostrum induces increased resistance in goat kids challenged with Trypanosoma congolense.

The course of infection and the humoral immune response to Trypanosoma congolense clone ILNat 3.1 were studied in test goat kids receiving colostrum from dams immunized with the surface coat of ILNat 3.1 and control kids that received colostrum from nonimmunized dams. At 24-48 h after birth, all test kids had detectable serum antibodies to the trypanosome clone. There was no difference in the prepatent period between the test and control kids following challenge with 10(3) T. congolense ILNat 3.1 trypanosomes 8 days after birth. After the first 7 days of the experimental period, significantly

Effect of Colostrum Components on Early Inflammatory Response, IgG Concentration and Weight Gain in Lambs.

Newborn sheep rely on passive transfer of immunity via colostrum as well as innate immunity for survival and adaptation to the extrauterine environment. This study examined associations between immunomodulatory constituents of colostrum, namely, immunoglobulin G (IgG), acute-phase proteins (APPs; serum amyloid A (SAA), and haptoglobin) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and their corresponding concentrations in serum of 2-3-day-old offspring in a cohort of 296 Dorper lambs across three consecutive years. It also assessed the effects of these immunological markers on average daily weight gain (ADWG) dur

Effects of colostrum processing on metabolic and endocrine parameters during early postnatal life in calves.

Colostrum feeding is essential for calf immunity, nutrition, and neonatal survival. To ensure availability when maternal supply is insufficient, various storage and preservation methods have been adopted in dairy management. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different colostrum processing methods on metabolic and endocrine parameters in newborn calves. Eighteen calves (15 Holstein Frisian, 3 Holstein × Limousin crossbreds) were separated from their dams immediately after birth and assigned to 1 of 3 groups. Calves were fed 2.5 L of either pooled unprocessed colostru

Association of colostrum traits with the farrowing process and reproductive performance of sows in a free farrowing system.

Colostrum is vital for neonatal piglets, supplying energy, immunoglobulins, hormones, and other bioactive compounds critical for early survival. Beyond its nutritional role, colostrum also reflects the sow's physiological and hormonal state during the periparturient period. This study investigated associations between colostrum composition, farrowing traits, and reproductive performance in a free farrowing system. Sixty sows were monitored, and colostrum samples (5-10 mL) were collected after the birth of the first piglet. Concentrations of progesterone, albumin, and alpha-lactalbumin were mea
