BACKGROUND: In diabetes mellitus conditions, hyperglycemia leads to oxidative stress, inflammation, and β-cell dysfunction, and traditional pharmacotherapy targets only a single pathway, which gives suboptimal outcomes and drug-related problems. A novel, polyherbal ethanol extract (PHE) formulation from Tinospora cordifolia, Commiphora wightii, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and Paeonia officinalis was evaluated for antidiabetic and organ-protective effects at different levels for multi-targeting in a streptozotocin (STZ)-induced rat model.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats were made diabetic using intraperi

Wound healing impairment is a well-documented phenomenon in clinical and experimental diabetes, and in diabetic wound healing impaired fibroblast has been linked to increased levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). A number of signaling pathways including TNF-α/forkhead box O1 (FOXO1) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)/Smads in fibroblasts appear to play a cardinal role in diabetic wound healing. Dehydroabietic acid (DAA) is obtained from Commiphora oppbalsamum and inhibits the production of TNF-α in macrophages and adipocytes, decreases the level of TNF-α in obese diabetic KK-Ay mi

The common scab disease caused by Streptomyces scabies, a soil-dwelling Gram-positive bacterium, is an economically important disease of potatoes and other tuber crops. The lack of effective treatments against this disease accounts for large economic losses globally. Plant extracts were screened to find several that effectively inhibited Streptomyces scabies growth in culture. Seven tinctures showed the greatest inhibition of S. scabies growth by reducing pathogen growth in culture by 75% or more. These extracts were myrrh, garlic, cayenne, barberry, frankincense, wild indigo root, and lavende
