Micronutrients in women's reproductive health: II. Minerals and trace elements.

It is widely accepted that micronutrients have a major function in many periods of women's life, particularly during pregnancy and lactation. Inadequate stores or intake of micronutrients might have adverse effects both to the mother (hypertension, anemia, complications of labor) and the fetus (congenital malformations, pre-term delivery, intrauterine growth retardation). The effect of improper nutrition is influenced by gestational age, severity of deficiency, or both. Generally, the daily requirements in minerals and trace elements are easily met in women having a balanced diet. Such diet du

Population Genomics Reveals Distinct Temporal Association with the Emergence of ST1 Serotype V Group B Streptococcus and Macrolide Resistance in North America.

Identified in the 1970s as the leading cause of invasive bacterial disease in neonates and young infants, group B Streptococcus (GBS) is now also recognized as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality among adults with underlying medical conditions and the elderly. Concomitant with the increasing incidence of GBS invasive disease in adults is the rise of resistance among GBS isolates to second line antibiotics. Previous research shows that among serotype V GBS, one of the most common capsular types causing adult invasive disease, sequence type 1 (ST1), accounts for an overwhelming majori

Pathogen class-specific transcriptional responses derived from PBMCs accurately discriminate between fungal, bacterial, and viral infections.

Immune responses during acute infection often contain canonical elements which are shared across the responses to an array of agents within a given pathogen class (i.e., respiratory viral infection). Identification of these shared, canonical elements across similar infections offers the potential for impacting development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics. In this way, analysis of host gene expression patterns ('signatures') in white blood cells has been shown to be useful for determining the etiology of some acute viral and bacterial infections. In order to study conserved immune elements

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Higher Levels of Mobile Element-Associated Abnormal Gene Transcripts in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Patients.

Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most common form of epilepsy, and temporal lobe epilepsy patients with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS) show worse drug treatment effects and prognosis. TLE has been shown to have a genetic component, but its genetic research has been mostly limited to coding sequences of genes with known association to epilepsy. Representing a major component of the genome, mobile elements (MEs) are believed to contribute to the genetic etiology of epilepsy despite limited research. We analyzed publicly available human RNA-seq-based transcriptome data to determine the

Nonsynonymous mutations within the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 p17 gene are clustered to sequences binding to the host human leukocyte antigen class I molecules.

We have analyzed the relation between intrapatient variabilities of the p17 gene and the location of known host p17 cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes in five patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). All patients were typed with respect to the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I type. One to seven previously fine-mapped p17 CTL epitopes corresponded to the HLA class I restriction elements of each patient. An average of 28+/-16% of the p17 gene of each patient encoded CTL epitopes corresponding to the HLA restriction elements of the host. Twenty full-length p17 g

TSS-seq of Toxoplasma gondii sporozoites revealed a novel motif in stage-specific promoters.

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common zoonotic protozoan parasites. It has three major infectious stages: rapidly multiplying tachyzoites (Tz), slowly replicating bradyzoites (Bz) and a resting/free-living stage, sporozoites (Sz). The regulatory mechanisms governing stage-specific gene expression are not fully understood. Few transcriptional start sites (TSS) are known for Sz. In this study, we obtained TSS of Sz using an oligo-capping method and RNA-seq analysis. We identified 1,043,503 TSS in the Sz transcriptome. These defined 38,973 TSS clusters, of which, 11,925 were expressed in Sz

Patient, sufferer, victim, casualty or person with cervical myelopathy: let us decide our identifier.

Among biomedical journals, person-first language is considered preferable to identity person-first language. However, not all populations of people with certain medical diagnoses, such as deafness, prefer person-first language. Moreover, adherence to person-first language is poor among the literature on some neurological diagnoses. Therefore, it is most appropriate to consult with people with a given diagnosis regarding their preferred identifier. Here, we describe a consensus process undertaken by the REsearch objectives and COmmon Data Elements for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy (RECODE-DC

[The toxic shock syndrome versus the adult Kawasaki syndrome. The diagnostic difficulties].

The case of a 18-year-old woman with the toxic shock syndrome (TSS) associated to a staphylococcal infection in the maxillary sinus is presented. The initial course of the disease was clinically superposed to a Kawasaki syndrome (KS). Both entities, of purely clinical diagnosis, possess many common elements occasionally making differentiation extremely difficult. The clinical data that may orient diagnosis to one of the processes was analyzed. Finally, it is emphasized that the paranasal sinus must be considered as an occult foci in those cases of TSS in which there is no apparent foci of infe

Chiari Malformation (Update on Diagnosis and Treatment).

Chiari Malformation Type I (CMI) is a congenital malformation diagnosed by MRI findings of at least 5 mm of cerebellar ectopy below the foramen magnum. CM1 is frequently associated with syringomyelia. Herein, we discuss the history of CMI and syringomyelia, including early pathological and surgical studies. We also describe recent investigations into the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of CMI and their practical implications on management and surgical intervention. We also highlight the recent development of the Common Data Elements for CMI, providing a framework for ongoing investigations. F

Forensic implications of the foot and ankle.

To clinicians, forensic medicine and the foot and ankle complex may appear to have little connection. However, if decomposed, burned, fragmented, or skeletonized human remains are recovered, the foot and ankle can provide information leading to identification and incident analysis. Furthermore, analysis of data collected at accidents can lead to safety modifications. This article reviews common elements of forensic medicine applied to the foot and ankle in 2 areas: establishing positive identification by using radiographic comparisons and analyzing aviation incidents. An understanding of these

Finite element model of the human lower cervical spine: parametric analysis of the C4-C6 unit.

In this study, a three-dimensional finite element model of the human lower cervical spine (C4-C6) was constructed. The mathematical model was based on close-up CT scans from a young human cadaver. Cortical shell, cancellous core, endplates, and posterior elements including the lateral masses, pedicle, lamina, and transverse and spinous processes, and the intervertebral disks, were simulated. Using the material properties from literature, the 10,371-element model was exercised under an axial compressive mode of loading. The finite element model response agreed with literature. As a logical step

Igniting Harmonized Digital Clinical Quality Measurement through Terminology, CQL, and FHIR.

BACKGROUND: Electronic clinical quality measures (eCQMs) seek to quantify the adherence of health care to evidence-based standards. This requires a high level of consistency to reduce the effort of data collection and ensure comparisons are valid. Yet, there is considerable variability in local data capture, in the use of data standards and in implemented documentation processes, so organizations struggle to implement quality measures and extract data reliably for comparison across patients, providers, and systems. OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we discuss opportunities for harmonization within an

A FHIR Consent Profile for European Research Biobanks.

Digital dynamic consent is a key element to improve the involvement of participants as proactive partners in research and requires the adoption of standard-based information models to support data reuse. In this work we present the HL7 FHIR Consent Profile we developed to integrate individual consent preferences on biobanked samples and relative information within the infrastructure of the the Biobanking and BioMolecular Resources European Research Infrastructure Consortium (BBMRI-ERIC). The Profile builds on the official HL7 FHIR Consent Resource and adopts the Common Condition of use Element

Development of patient-tailored preoperative assessment of percutaneous vertebroplasty.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), a minimally invasive surgery technique, has become the common treatment for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF). The complications of PVP will lead to severe damage to spinal neuro systems due to bone cement leakage. A patient tailored preoperative assessment approach was developed to reduce the risks of complications in this study. The porcine OVCF model was fabricated to mimic the patient vertebral fracture in vitro using decalcification process. The 3D reconstructed model based on the imagological examination data acquired from the porcine

Increasing awareness of degenerative cervical myelopathy: a preventative cause of non-traumatic spinal cord injury.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) is a common non-traumatic spinal cord disorder and characterized by progressive neurological impairment. Generally, it is still underdiagnosed and referral to spine specialists is often late, when patients already present with incomplete cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). To improve early diagnosis and accelerate referral, diagnostic criteria for DCM are required. Recently, AO Spine RECODE- DCM (REsearch Objectives and Common Data Elements for Degenerative Cervical Myelopathy) (aospine.org/recode), an international, interdisciplinary and interprofessional

[Hypersensitivity angiitis or microscopic polyarteritis nodosa. Recent findings. II. Clinical aspects].

Hypersensitivity angiitis is one of the commonest necrotising vasculitides. Given the ubiquitous distribution of the small blood vessels almost any part of the body may be affected. However benign forms predominantly involving the skin are the most common. Forms predominantly involving the viscera and that may prove fatal are rare. Among the polymorphous skin lesions encountered "palpable purpura" is the most common and its palpability is a vital element in differential diagnosis. Among non-cutaneous sites the kidneys are the most frequent and glomerular involvement is the commonest cause of d
