BACKGROUND: Pharmacists are well-positioned to enhance medication management and support patients; however, their participation in palliative care in the UAE remains limited due to insufficient training, unclear professional roles, and organizational constraints. Addressing these issues is vital to enable pharmacists to contribute to comprehensive, patient-centred care and improved health outcomes.
AIM: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of community pharmacists in the UAE toward palliative care, and to identify perceived barriers and factors associated with suboptimal practice

Government engagement with communities are critical for achieving health equity goals. The available literature is plentiful on community and civil society's barriers to meaningful participation. However, considerably less documentation abounds on how to address barriers to equal interaction within the participatory process, with concrete interventions tested and assessed. This paper aims to bridge that research gap by studying community engagement for health policymaking in Madagascar, focusing on how policy makers can design interaction with communities in a way which decreases power imbalan

INTRODUCTION: While 86% of US households are food secure, nutritional quality remains poor. Minimal research has been conducted to identify and address the complex, multilevel barriers and solutions for nutrition security in local communities.
METHODS: We employed a mixed-methods community-based participatory research approach to better understand nutrition security by identifying multilevel barriers and potential solutions from the perspectives of 35 low-income community residents, 27 food system workers and 7 local policy-makers in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
RESULTS: Four themes emer

BACKGROUND: Decline of intergenerational co-residence, risk of functional and emotional deprivations in old age, and the diminishing capacity of families to care in-person for their older parents have intensified the demand for formal care provisions among left-behind older adults in migrant households of Kerala. While several attempts have been made to quantify the accessibility and utilisation of geriatric care, there is a dearth of evidence on the realities of alternative care in Kerala. The present study aims to explore the perception of older adults (65+) and service providers (government

BACKGROUND: The aging population is becoming a growing challenge for health care systems, pushing toward the need for systemic adaptations. In Italy, the role of the Family and Community Nurse (FCN) was introduced as a response to these demographic changes, aimed at ensuring personalized and integrated care for the older adults at the national level. Despite national institutional recognition, the implementation of the FCN role varies considerably across regions, resulting in uneven and fragmented service delivery. To better understand this variability, the present study aimed to describe the

BACKGROUND: Community Case management of malaria (CCMm) is a strategy used in malaria-endemic areas to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality. CCMm involves providing malaria diagnosis and treatment within the community by trained community health volunteers (CHVs). While evidence suggests CCMm is effective in combating the disease burden at the community level, it isn't without challenges. This study assesses facilitators of and barriers to uptake of CCMm.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study employed a mixed methods approach. Quantitative data was collected using a household questionnaire ta

Globally, people living in northern Indigenous communities are at higher risk of dog bites than the rest of the population living in North America, with annual incidence ranging from 0.61 to 59.6/10,000 inhabitants. Considering that rabies is endemic in wild canid populations in certain regions of the Arctic, the prevention of dog bites and the management of dog populations are of crucial importance for public health in these contexts. Most northern communities lack access to veterinary services, mainly due to their remote geographical location and to limited financial resources. Currently, no

BACKGROUND: People with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (PWH) experience barriers to care within the community that impedes their progress from when they discover that they are HIV positive to becoming virally suppressed. For individuals with HIV to achieve sustained viral suppression, they must be linked to care to start receiving anti-retroviral therapy and remain retained in care for continuous treatment. However, HIV surveillance data shows that many PWH are not linked to care and become lost to continuous follow-up care. Although pharmacists, PWH, and social workers interact with one ano

BACKGROUND: African American women are at a disproportionate HIV risk compared with other U.S. women. Studies show that complex structural and social determinants, rather than individual behaviors, place African American women at greater risk of HIV infection; however, little is known about women's views of what puts them at risk.
AIMS: This study sought to comprehend the perceptions of African American women living in low-income housing regarding the factors that influence both their personal sexual health behaviors and use of HIV prevention services.
METHODS: We conducted seven focus group

The study investigated the impact of dietary montmorillonite on the growth performance, intestinal mucosal barrier, and microbial community in weaned piglets with control group (CON) and dietary supplementation of 0.2% montmorillonite (0.2% M). Compared with the CON group, 0.2% M feed in the diet increased the average daily gain (ADG) on days 15-35 and day 1-35 and the average daily feed intake on days 1-35 (ADFI) (0.05 < P < 0.1). Besides, higher villus height of the duodenum and jejunum and lower crypt depth of duodenum and colon were revealed in the 0.2% M group than in the CON group (P < 0

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is considered a common cause of mental status changes, particularly in elderly patients and patients with a psychiatric condition. Genitourinary symptoms are essential to confirm UTI diagnosis but may be unobtainable in patients with a communication barrier. Sparse guidance suggests assessing specific symptoms that do not rely on patient report. The primary objective of this project was to provide assistance in diagnosis and treatment of UTIs in noncommunicative patients through the creation of an algorithm.

Although African American families are at particular risk for obesity and its associated health comorbidities, few interventions have directly targeted low-income members of this group living in subsidized public housing. Using a consensual qualitative research approach, we conducted 11 interviews with African American mothers living in two public housing communities to enhance understanding of their perceived barriers and facilitators to health. Five primary domains emerged, including barriers (access, financial, personal, and neighborhood concerns), resources (personal and community), curren

BACKGROUND: We examined the association between perceived environmental barriers to outdoor mobility and loneliness among community-dwelling older people. In addition, we studied whether walking difficulties and autonomy in participation outdoors affected this association.
METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of face-to-face home interview data with 848 people aged 75-90 years (mean age: 80.1 years; 62% women) gathered within the "Life-Space Mobility in Old Age" (LISPE) project. Self-reports of loneliness, environmental barriers to outdoor mobility, and difficulties in walking 2 km were obtained

BACKGROUND: To identify the relationship between perceived environmental barriers and disability in community-dwelling elderly.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study in two community service centers in Tainan. We enrolled 200 community-dwelling residents, aged above 65 years, who had resided in the same community for at least 12 months. Basic activity of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activity of daily living (IADL) were assessed using the Hierarchy of Care Required (HCR). There were 59 participants in BADL disability and 109 in IADL disability. Perceived environmental barriers were assessed u

BACKGROUND: Environmental barriers are associated with disability-related outcomes in older people but little is known of the effect of environmental barriers on mortality. The aim of this study was to examine whether objectively measured barriers in the outdoor, entrance and indoor environments are associated with mortality among community-dwelling 80- to 89-year-old single-living people.
METHODS: This longitudinal study is based on a sample of 397 people who were single-living in ordinary housing in Sweden. Participants were interviewed during 2002-2003, and 393 were followed up for mortali

Community-based geriatric case managers work with an increasingly frail older population in need of advance care planning throughout the end of life. However, little is known regarding factors that influence their professional practices in this area. This qualitative study used four focus groups to explore case managers' (N = 27) perceptions of facilitators and barriers to advance care planning practices. Themes from the study suggest that case managers view five key influences that appear to either assist or impede practices, depending on case manager's perceptions and experiences. Themes inc

BACKGROUND: Health information systems (HISs) are essential for strengthening health systems in underserved areas. However, many HISs in Africa are still in the early stages of implementation, and existing systems often suffer from imbalances in data availability. Their optimization is faced with various challenges, including limited resources, which restricts their scalability.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to identify contextual barriers that hinder the optimization of HIS in African underserved settings. Specifically, the study adopts the lens of frugal innovation (FI) and informatio
