Objectives. To describe the health care and social services needs addressed by community health workers (CHWs) through referrals in the Community Health Workers for COVID-19 Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program. Methods. We performed a descriptive analysis of national performance measure data from 67 CCR recipients from 2021 to 2024 documenting referrals, alongside 2 web-based surveys of 63 program administrators and 689 CHWs in the United States in early 2024. Results. CHWs made 464 158 social and 323 769 health referrals, with 282 596 referrals completed. Referrals included servi

Self-determination theory (SDT) is a behavior change framework emphasizing autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The Women's Initiative Supporting Health (WISH) intervention trains community health workers (CHWs) with lived experience of incarceration to support recently released women in accessing care for HIV, hepatitis C, and substance use. This article aims to assess CHW adherence to SDT principles within the WISH intervention and explore fidelity to motivational interviewing and trauma-responsive practices. Fifteen recorded WISH intervention sessions were transcribed and analyzed using a

The burden of type-2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension (HTN) in Cambodia is a major concern. The government and donors have introduced several interventions, yet human resource shortages hamper their implementation. Community health workers (CHWs) can be a valuable additional resource for health in T2D and HTN management. The current study aimed to assess (1) CHWs' knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) in T2D and HTN management and (2) the potential health system barriers for incorporating CHWs in T2D and HTN management. This mixed-method study comprised a survey among 153 active CHWs to asse

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in access to tobacco cessation support and resources remain significant issues among community members with low socioeconomic status (SES). Community health workers (CHWs) can connect with community members and have flexibility in delivering treatments to underserved populations. The Community Health Allies Nicotine Guidance Education (C.H.A.N.G.E.) project, designed for CHWs, aimed to address the disparities by implementing a tailored tobacco cessation training program. The current study examined the C.H.A.N.G.E. program's preliminary effectiveness on CHW knowledge g

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a community health worker-supported hereditary cancer risk-assessment and genetic testing program in a safety-net hospital serving more than 70% medically underserved patients.
METHODS: This community health worker pilot program began in January 2020 at women's health clinics by administering original National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN)-based questionnaires. Patients meeting high-risk criteria were offered video-based genetic education and testing, notified of results using telehealth, and offered indicated counseling. We compared the rate of gen

Optimising the scale and deployment of community health workers (CHWs) is important for maximizing geographical accessibility of integrated primary health care (PHC) services. Yet little is known about approaches for doing so. We used geospatial analysis to model optimised scale-up and deployment of CHWs in Mali, to inform strategic and operational planning by the Ministry of Health and Social Development. Accessibility catchments were modelled based on travel time, accounting for barriers to movement. We compared geographic coverage of the estimated population, under-five deaths, and plasmodi

BACKGROUND: Community health worker (CHW) interventions are an evidence-based practice adopted by health care settings to increase retention in care and viral suppression for people living with HIV (PLWH) from racial/ethnic minority communities. However, disparate funding, unclear roles vis a vis other care team members, limited training and promotion opportunities, and a lack of standards for wages and tasks limit the ability to effectively use CHWs as part of the health care team. Guided by the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation, and Sustainment and Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Impl

BACKGROUND: Many countries have created community-based health worker (CHW) programs for HIV. In most of these countries, several national and non-governmental initiatives have been implemented raising questions of how well these different approaches address the health problems and use health resources in a compatible way. While these questions have led to a general policy initiative to promote harmonization across programs, there is a need for countries to develop a more coherent and organized approach to CHW programs and to generate evidence about the most efficient and effective strategies

INTRODUCTION: Older adults experience complex health and social challenges, including chronic disease, polypharmacy, caregiving demands, social isolation, and unmet health-related social needs (HRSN). Health literacy is a cross-cutting factor influencing the ability to find, understand, communicate about, and navigate health and social services. Community health workers (CHWs) are well positioned to address these intersections, yet integrated workforce training remains limited.
METHODS: This manuscript describes a health literacy-centered CHW and frontline workforce training model emphasizing

PURPOSE: Community Health Workers (CHWs) represent a potential strategy in ophthalmology to address adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) and improve vision outcomes. In this study, we explored the feasibility, acceptability, and impact of a structured CHW intervention among patients with diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective single-center pilot study conducted at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute. Adult participants (≥ 18 years) with diabetes and at least one adverse SDoH participated in the study. The CHW worked with the participant for on average 6 months to a

Background: Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in bridging between healthcare systems and underserved communities. Although CHW certification has expanded across the United States, limited research has examined whether certification supports long-term career advancement and workforce development for CHWs themselves. This study examined how certified CHWs perceive the role of certification in shaping career trajectories and long-term workforce retention, with implications for CHW program design and public health workforce policy. A qualitative study using semi-structured intervie

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Effectively implemented community health worker (CHW) programs improve patient health outcomes and quality of care, reduce health care costs, and are a key strategy for addressing social and structural drivers of health. As policymakers consider funding mechanisms for CHW programs, it is crucial to tie funding to evidence-based best practices while also allowing for innovation and context-specific adaptations.
CONTEXT: Community health worker (CHW) programs represent a key strategy for addressing social and structural drivers of health and have the potential to impro

INTRODUCTION: Less than half of eligible Black women are assessed for genetic risk and only 28% engage in recommended hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) risk-reducing interventions. CHWs are trusted individuals that work as a liaison between health systems and the community to improve access to services and support cancer prevention efforts, though they are an overlooked resource to support genetic risk assessment. To address the need and training gaps for CHWs, we developed and assessed an online training program to build CHW's competencies in cancer genomics and use of health inform

INTRODUCTION: Since 2004, the Children's Oral Health Initiative (COHI) has been working in many First Nations and Inuit communities in Canada to address oral health disparities, specifically early childhood caries (ECC). The COHI community-based approach improves early childhood oral health (ECOH) by balancing prevention with minimally invasive dentistry. The goal is to reduce the burden of oral disease, mainly by minimizing the need for surgery. We investigated program success in First Nations communities in the province of Manitoba, from the perspective of COHI staff.
METHODS: First Nations

Unhealthy alcohol use (UAU) affects nearly 1 in 4 Latinx/o/a individuals in the United States (US). Compared with White individuals, Latinx/o/a individuals with UAU face increased morbidity, decreased access to addiction treatment, and higher rates of incarceration. Community health workers (CHWs), also known as promotores, provide culturally and linguistically informed services while augmenting social and health care interventions. Although there is extensive literature evaluating the role of CHW interventions for chronic conditions including hypertension and diabetes, less is known about CHW

Diabetes prevalence is increasing worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), posing the need for improved detection and management strategies. Chronic disease models and lifestyle medicine provide structures for action. Community health workers (CHWs) can significantly contribute to chronic disease care if they are trained and integrated into low-resource health systems. Although most current CHWs worldwide are performing maternal/child health and infectious disease-related tasks, other programs involving CHWs for noncommunicable disease prevention and management are inc

Globally, health worker shortages continue to plague developing countries. Community health workers are increasingly being promoted to extend primary health care to underserved populations. Since 2004, Healthy Child Uganda (HCU) has trained volunteer community health workers in child health promotion in rural southwest Uganda. This study analyses the retention and motivation of volunteer community health workers trained by HCU. It presents retention rates over a 5-year period and provides insight into volunteer motivation. The findings are based on a 2010 retrospective review of the community
