Building social networks for health promotion: Shout-out Health, New Jersey, 2011.

BACKGROUND: Building social networks for health promotion in high-poverty areas may reduce health disparities. Community involvement provides a mechanism to reach at-risk people with culturally tailored health information. Shout-out Health was a feasibility project to provide opportunity and support for women at risk for or living with human immunodeficiency virus infection to carry out health promotion within their informal social networks. COMMUNITY CONTEXT: The Shout-out Health project was designed by an academic-community agency team. During 3 months, health promotion topics were chosen,

Collaborative research: empowering students and connecting to community.

Public health social work is committed to improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities. Collaborative partnerships can be a tremendous resource and valuable approach to meeting community needs. This article discusses the essential role of partnership and community learning through the case study of a student-faculty team engaged in collaborative research on homelessness in upstate New York in an effort to inform the development of a community affordable housing plan. The goals of the project were to (1) improve understanding of homelessness at the local level, (2) contrib

'They take advantage of, and force themselves on us': a qualitative analysis of Haitian women's perceptions of sexual exploitation and abuse by MINUSTAH.

The United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), established in 2004, was tasked with maintaining peace and stability in the aftermath of political upheaval in Haiti. However, it faced numerous allegations of peacekeeper-perpetrated sexual exploitation and abuse (PP-SEA) during its deployment, drawing significant international attention and criticism. This qualitative study conducted eight focus group discussions with Haitian women who have been affected by or had knowledge of PP-SEA. Through rigorous thematic analysis, this research uncovers narratives that illuminate how Haitian

Influence of Organizational Characteristics on Success in Implementing Process Improvement Goals in Correctional Treatment Settings.

Although research indicates that organizational characteristics substantially influence the adoption and use of evidence-based practices (EBPs), there has been little empirical research on organizational factors most likely to influence successful implementation of EBPs, particularly in criminal justice settings. This study examined organizational characteristics related to the success of change teams in achieving improvements in assessment and case-planning procedures for persons leaving correctional settings and receiving community services. In this evaluation of the Organizational Process I

A qualitative exploration of harm reduction in practice by street-based peer outreach workers.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of the phrase "harm reduction" and the proliferation of programs based on its principles during the current opioid epidemic, what it means in practice is not universally agreed upon. Harm reduction strategies have expanded from syringe and needle exchange programs that emerged in the mid-1980s primarily in response to the HIV epidemic, to include medication for opioid use disorder, supervised consumption rooms, naloxone distribution, and drug checking technologies such as fentanyl test strips. Harm reduction can often be in tension with abstinence and rec

Long-term care survey reveals challenges. Facilities grapple with five broad issues, including changes in leadership and AIDS.

The Catholic Health Association's 1992 survey of Catholic long-term care (LTC) facilities identified five broad issues LTC facilities face in the 1990s: leadership, system affiliation, community programs, resident issues, and care of persons with AIDS. The transition to lay leadership presents new challenges to the relationship between LTC facilities and their sponsors. Despite the dominance of religious sponsors, an increasing number of laypersons are serving as healthcare administrators both in long-term and acute care. Thirty percent of respondents reported being affiliated with a multi-ins

Chat to PAT - an outreach service providing comprehensive primary health care to marginalised people.

People living at the margins of the community have significantly worse health outcomes, and this is most stark for those experiencing homelessness, who have up to a 20-year lower life expectancy. Access to comprehensive, relationship-based, longitudinal primary health is recognised as a key factor in high-performing healthcare systems, yet marginalised individuals rarely have access to these services. This paper provides a detailed description of a mobile primary healthcare service in Canberra, ACT, that focuses on caring for people with current or past alcohol and drug dependency, mental heal

Community-Led Action to Reduce Menthol Cigarette Use in the African American Community.

Background. African Americans suffer a disproportionate burden of tobacco harm and researchers have posited that menthol cigarettes are a key contributor to this disparity. In 2015, a county health department and African American community-based organization (CBO) in Minnesota partnered to educate and engage the African American community on menthol and its role in tobacco-related health disparities. The following case study describes successes, challenges, and recommendations from this work. We focus on the role of a public health and community partnership in menthol policy adoption so others

Evaluating the impact of conflict resolution on urban children's violence-related attitudes and behaviors in New Haven, Connecticut, through a community-academic partnership.

Numerous schools are implementing youth violence prevention interventions aimed at enhancing conflict resolution skills without evaluating their effectiveness. Consequently, we formed a community-academic partnership between a New Haven community-based organization and Yale's School of Public Health and Prevention Research Center to examine the impact of an ongoing conflict resolution curriculum in New Haven elementary schools, which had yet to be evaluated. Throughout the 2007-08 school year, 191 children in three schools participated in a universal conflict resolution intervention. We used a

HIV infection in U.S. correctional systems: its effect on the community.

Increased rates of HIV infection and risk-taking behaviors among incarcerated men and women make the fight against HIV within the prison and jail systems an especially critical issue in community health. Overcrowded conditions impact on the rotation of inmates in and out of the correctional system. This revolving door phenomenon has implications for disease prevention and control within the community into which the inmates are released. As more people pass in and out of jails and prisons, more problems and diseases associated with incarceration pass into the community. The special needs of the

Time, dual roles, and departments of public health: lessons learned in CBPR by an AIDS service organization.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is an important approach to inform the development and implementation of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment strategies. However, there is a paucity of literature describing CBPR from the perspective of community-based organizations (CBOs), specifically AIDS service organizations (ASO). Focusing on the perspective of the executive director (ED) from the partnering ASO, we describe in this paper lessons learned during Project Counseling Others About Contacts and Exposures with HIV (COACH), a CBPR, qualitative study intended to examine perspectives and

Exploring Children's Physical Activity Experiences in After-School Programs: Insights from a University-Community Partnership Initiative.

This study aimed to comprehensively understand how children engaged with physical activity in after-school programs developed through a university-community partnership initiative. The program was designed to enhance physical activity opportunities for elementary school students by offering a variety of structured and unstructured activities, facilitated by physical education teacher education (PETE) major students serving as mentors. A mixed-methods approach was employed, using both quantitative and qualitative data. Seventy children completed the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES) bef

Everyday territories: homelessness, outreach work and city space.

This article develops a situational approach to understanding urban public life and, in particular, the production of urban territories. Our aim is to examine the ways in which city space might be understood as comprising multiple, shifting, mobile and rhythmed territories. We argue that such territories are best understood through attending to their everyday production and negotiation, rather than handling territory as an a priori construct. We develop this argument from the particular case of the street-level politics of homelessness and street care. The experience of street homelessness and

Counting and Surveying Homeless Youth: Recommendations from YouthCount 2.0!, a Community-Academic Partnership.

Communities across the United States are increasing efforts to find and count homeless youth. This paper presents findings and lessons learned from a community/academic partnership to count homeless youth and conduct an in depth research survey focused on the health needs of this population. Over a 4 week recruitment period, 632 youth were counted and 420 surveyed. Methodological successes included an extended counting period, broader inclusion criteria to capture those in unstable housing, use of student volunteers in health training programs, recruiting from magnet events for high risk youth

Air flight disaster, posttraumatic stress, and postventive rescue and response: the aftermath of the San Diego PSA 182 plane crash recovery operation, 20 years on.

San Diego in 1978 was the scene of one of the USA's most tragic and traumatic air flight disasters, when an inbound Boeing 727 collided with a small private Cessna 172. The collision occurred in the vicinity of North Park, a suburb of San Diego. All aircraft occupants were killed or injured and many residents were injured. The wreckage was mainly concentrated in an area about the size of a city block, in a temperature of 100 degrees F or more. The whole experience was unlike anything any of the professionals involved had been prepared for, and beyond anything the civilians involved could have

Development and validation of a discriminative quality of life questionnaire for osteoporosis (the OPTQoL).

We report the development and validation of an osteoporosis-targeted quality of life questionnaire to measure the impact of the disease in the general population. From multiple focus groups with women with osteoporosis, healthy women at risk for osteoporosis, spouses and relatives of women with osteoporosis, and health care providers, we identified over 300 potential items related to the disease. A lengthy questionnaire incorporated these items and was administered to a second large study cohort of 222 women with clinical osteoporosis (history of fracture, significant height loss, and/or kypho
