Degradation of tetracycline and sulfadiazine during continuous thermophilic composting of pig manure and sawdust.

During composting, the thermophilic phase resulted in high degradation of antibiotics in the composting mass; thus temperature is considered as the major factor for degradation of antibiotics. Therefore, to achieve complete removal of antibiotics, the effect of continuous thermophilic composting on the degradation of antibiotics and their effect on antibiotic resistant bacteria in the pig manure were evaluated. Pig manure was mixed with sawdust, spiked with tetracycline (10 and 100 mg/kg) and sulfadiazine (2 and 20mg/kg) on dry weight (DW) basis and composted at 55 degrees C for six weeks. Bas

Bioaerosols from a food waste composting plant affect human airway epithelial cell remodeling genes.

The composting procedure in food waste plants generates airborne bioaerosols that have the potential to damage human airway epithelial cells. Persistent inflammation and repair responses induce airway remodeling and damage to the respiratory system. This study elucidated the expression changes of airway remodeling genes in human lung mucoepidermoid NCI-H292 cells exposed to bioaerosols from a composting plant. Different types of microorganisms were detectable in the composting plant, using the agar culture method. Real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to quantify the level of Aspergillu

Characterization of organic matter degradation during composting of manure-straw mixtures spiked with tetracyclines.

The objective of this study was to investigate humification and mineralization of manure-straw mixtures contaminated by tetracyclines during composting. Hen manure, pig manure and rice straw were used as the raw materials. The manure-straw mixtures were spiked with tetracycline, chlortetracycline, and oxytetracycline at the concentration of 60 mg/kg dry matter. The results show that tetracyclines had no obvious influence on the composting process and more than 93% of the tetracyclines was decreased during a 45-day composting. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra indicated that easily

Bioremediation of leachate from a green waste composting facility using waste-derived filter media.

The evaluation of two waste-derived materials used to treat compost leachate by biofiltration is described in this paper. Nine biofilters were constructed using 240 l, high density polyethylene containers. Three containers were filled without compaction with 200l of each of three types of filter media. Waste-derived filter media (compost and oversize) were compared to a mineral control (granite chips). The filters were fed with compost leachate from a typical green waste composting facility at hydraulic loading rates ranging from 0.05 m3/m3/day to 0.5 m3/m3/day over a period of twelve months.

Implementing biowaste source segregation for sustainable decentralized composting schemes in Tiassalé, southern Côte d'Ivoire.

Research in sub-Saharan Africa has shown failures in most of municipal waste composting initiatives because of bad-quality composts due to the lack of biowaste source segregation. Until now, very few biowaste source-segregation initiatives have been carried out on this part of the world. This study aimed at assessing the biowaste sorting efficiency and the attitude of households towards a pilot biowaste source-segregation system linked to a decentralized composting plant in Tiassalé. For this purpose, the impurity rate of source-segregated biowaste was monitored through the first year of imple

Metagenomic insights to effective elimination of resistomes in food waste composting by lime addition.

Food waste contains abundant resistomes, including antibiotic and heavy metal resistance genes (ARGs and MRGs), which pose risks to the environment and human health. Composting can be used for food waste treatment, but it fails to effectively eliminate these resistomes. Thus, this study investigated the performance of lime to regulate the dynamics and mobility of ARGs and MRGs in food waste composting by metagenomics. Genome-resolved analysis was further conducted to identify the ARGs and MRGs hosts and their horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events. Results showed that lime addition at 1 % (wet

Bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential risks during composting: Focus on pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.

In this study, we analyzed bioaerosol emission characteristics and potential risks of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during composting using the impaction culture method and metagenomic sequencing. The results showed that the highly saturated water vapor in the emission gas mitigated particulate matter emission during the thermophilic period. About the bioaerosols, the airborne aerobic bacterial emissions were suppressed as composting enters the mature period, and the airborne fungi are usually present as single-cell or small-cell aggregates (< 3.3 µm). In addition, the microbial community str

Superphosphate, biochar, and a microbial inoculum regulate phytotoxicity and humification during chicken manure composting.

The germination index (GI) is the best index for evaluating compost phytotoxicity and maturity. In order to improve GI and reduce phytotoxicity of chicken manure compost, superphosphate, biochar, and a microbial inoculum were added in this study. Maturity indices (pH, electrical conductivity, and GI), water-soluble ion, organic matter, humic acid, humic precursor contents, and the bacteria community were analyzed during the experiment. NH4+, volatile fatty acids, and humic acid strongly affected the GI, which increased as the humic acid content increased and the volatile fatty acid and NH4+ co

Combined effects of composting and antibiotic administration on cattle manure-borne antibiotic resistance genes.

BACKGROUND: Research is needed to delineate the relative and combined effects of different antibiotic administration and manure management practices in either amplifying or attenuating the potential for antibiotic resistance to spread. Here, we carried out a comprehensive parallel examination of the effects of small-scale (> 55 °C × 3 days) static and turned composting of manures from dairy and beef cattle collected during standard antibiotic administration (cephapirin/pirlimycin or sulfamethazine/chlortetracycline/tylosin, respectively), versus from untreated cattle, on "resistomes" (total an

Mechanism of clay minerals in promoting organic matter sequestration and humification during chicken manure composting.

To accelerate the humification process and promote organic matter sequestration during aerobic composting, this work assessed how various clay minerals facilitate organic matter sequestration and humic acid synthesis in chicken manure composting. A composting trial was set up, including a control and three treatments incorporating montmorillonite , halloysite , and sepiolite , respectively. A water-permeable membrane encapsulation technique was employed to isolate the clay minerals from the composting feedstock in order to monitor their adsorption behavior towards organic matter. Synergistic application of biochar and compound microbial inoculant improves the performance of green waste composting.

Composting of green waste (GW) is a sustainable strategy for organic waste recycling; however, its efficiency is often constrained by the recalcitrant nature of lignocellulosic components. This study evaluated the synergistic effects of biochar (BC) and a compound microbial inoculant (VT) on lignocellulose degradation and overall composting performance. Nine treatments were established with varying BC (0 %, 3 %, and 6 %) and VT (0 %, 0.2 %, and 0.4 %) additions over a 35-day composting period. Among all treatments, the co-application of 6 % BC and 0.2 % VT (T8) produced the greatest improvemen
