INTRODUCTION: Patients with leg ulcers often have severe edema of the lower extremities, which should be treated as part of a successful wound treatment. Today in Germany the necessary compression therapies are often performed with very error-prone and time-consuming short-stretch bandages only. Multicomponent systems, adaptive compression bandages and leg ulcer stocking systems are newer, much less error-prone treatment options. In addition to the often lacking knowledge, the fears of high costs are also mentioned as reasons for the lack of prescription of these systems. It was therefore our

OBJECTIVE: To compare core temperatures of superficial and deep digital flexor tendons (SDFT, DDFT) during application of a compression cooling system versus ice boots and during subsequent lower limb bandaging.
STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study.
ANIMALS: Paired forelimbs of six sedated horses.
METHODS: Thermocouples were placed in the core of SDFT and DDFT of both front limbs of each horse. A compression cooling system was applied to one front limb and an ice boot was applied to the other front limb for 60 min and then removed for 60 min. Standing bandages were then applied to both front li

The author discusses the indications and contraindication of compression. The study of auto-immune complexes in the circulating blood has shown a significant increase in lymphedema patients with erysipeloid inflammations and a definite increase, but less marked, in lymphedema patients without a past history of fever. Then, the compression values are studied in the 5 stages of the treatment of lymphedema by compression: elevation with Thuasne 18 bandages, Lymphapress and if necessary Tubing (always general anesthesia) limited to the leg. For the thigh, lymphatic "drainage" is recommended. Then

Compression therapy with short-stretch bandages is the most common treating option for patients with venous leg ulcers in the decongestion phase in Germany. This randomised controlled intervention study examined whether a training is suitable to sustainably improve the skills of health care professionals. Altogether 55 nurses from hospitals and outpatient care participated. They were randomly assigned to case and control groups. Participants' abilities to properly apply a compression bandaging were assessed before and after a training session as well as after 1 and 3 months using a newly devel

We describe four cases of iron extravasation injuries presenting to a dermatology clinic, where compression applied post-infusion appeared to reduce or prevent cutaneous siderosis. In each case, distinct patterns of hyperpigmentation were observed, with areas of compression from bandages or dressings showing reduced staining. Iron extravasation, a complication of intravenous iron therapy, can cause permanent cosmetic damage and distress. Current treatment options for reversing staining are limited, costly and require multiple sessions. This case series suggests that compression may be a simple

Osmidrosis is a condition characterized by malodorous sweat production in the armpits that often necessitates surgical intervention with tie-over bandages in the axillary area. Standard tie-over bandages may cause skin compression-related complications, such as bruising and skin erosion. To address this issue, we developed a novel technique using a modified protective sleeve. We conducted an observational study involving 60 patients undergoing axillary osmidrosis surgery and divided them into groups. In the experimental group we used a novel technique that included using a modified protective

This study evaluated how different levels of pressure under inelastic multi-layer bandages affect the reduction of secondary arm lymphedema and patient comfort throughout therapy. Ninety-six women with lymphedema after breast cancer treatment were randomized into three groups of 32 patients depending on level of applied pressure in compression therapy: group I (control) at 21-30 mmHg; study groups II A at 31-40 mmHg and group II B at 41-60 mmHg. All patients were treated with complex decongestive therapy (CDT) and intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) before compression. Fixed points of bil

In this review article the mechanisms of action of compression therapy are summarized and a survey of materials is presented together with some practical advice how and when these different devices should be applied. Some new experimental findings regarding the optimal dosage (= compression pressure) concerning an improvement of venous hemodynamics and a reduction of oedema are discussed. It is shown, that stiff, non-yielding material applied with adequate pressure provides hemodynamically superior effects compared to elastic material and that relatively low pressures reduce oedema. Compressio

There is growing evidence on an interconnection between the venous and lymphatic systems in venous leg ulceration, and the possible effects of prolonged oedema and lymphatic impairment in delayed wound healing. Compression therapy is a widely accepted treatment for venous and lymphatic disorders, as it decreases recurrence rates and prolongs the interval between recurrences. Compression bandages improve venous return, increase the volume and rate of venous flow, reduce oedema and stimulate anti-inflammatory processes. The pressure at the interface (IP) of the bandage and the skin is related to

Non-elastic compression has been used to treat venous insufficiency of the lower extremities for more than 150 years. The best and most recognized example is the Unna boot. When compared with other dressings, the Unna boot has performed as well as or better than other forms of compression. While the Unna boot is used worldwide, a 3- or 4-layer dressing has emerged as the dressing of choice in treating severe chronic venous insufficiency in the United States and English-speaking European countries. In the United States, non-elastic compression can also be applied as a CircAid legging. This semi

BACKGROUND: The Rapid Deployment Hemostat (RDH) Bandage was developed for the rapid control of bleeding caused by trauma.
METHODS: An extremity wound involving skin, muscle, bone, and femoral arterial injury and a 1-cm vertical incision in the abdominal aorta in swine were studied to compare the RDH Bandage, a fibrin sealant dressing and gauze to restore hemostasis. The total blood loss was determined and the survival of animals was measured.
RESULTS: In the extremity injury model, the RDH Bandage reduced blood loss by 63% compared with the gauze control. In the aorta arterial incision model

Excessive compression after parotidectomy can lead to flap necrosis, while inadequate pressure can cause fluid accumulation. This study aimed to determine the optimal pressure and compression properties of different types of dressings. Initially, pressure measurements were taken for conventional Barton's dressing and a pre-fabricated facial garment. In the subsequent phase, patients were randomly assigned to receive one of three types of pressure dressings: conforming bandage Barton's dressing, elastic bandage Barton's dressing or pre-fabricated facial garment. The dressing types were randomly

BACKGROUND: Non-healing chronic wounds, such as venous leg ulcers, can be monitored non-invasively by using modern sensing devices and wireless technologies. The development of such a wireless diagnostic tool may improve chronic wound management by providing evidence on efficacy of treatments being provided. This paper presents a low-power portable telemetric system for wound condition sensing and monitoring. The system aims at measuring and transmitting real-time information of wound-site temperature, sub-bandage pressure and moisture level from within the wound dressing.
METHODS: Commercial

This double blind controlled study examined whether oxygen-derived free radicals interfere with the healing of venous ulceration occurring on the medial side of the leg for the first time. Graduated compression bandages exerting a mean ankle pressure of 42.1 +/- 0.3 mmHg and a mean pressure of 17.3 +/- 0.2 mmHg just below the knee healed 70% of ulcers within 12 weeks (n = 44). Addition of the radical scavengers allopurinol (n = 45) or dimethyl sulfoxide (n = 44) to the compression bandages (daily application of the powder for 7 days, then once weekly applications to the end of the study at 3 m

PURPOSE: To describe the use of an equine compression suit to manage a deep axillary wound in a Thoroughbred filly with bilateral pneumothorax.
CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old Thoroughbred filly was referred for management of a deep wound to the left axilla. Packing and bandaging of the area were initially attempted, but this became repeatedly dislodged, and bandaging was discontinued. The filly subsequently developed widespread subcutaneous emphysema, and the wound was slow to granulate. Acute onset respiratory distress occurred 11 days after admission, secondary to bilateral worsening pneumothor

OBJECTIVE: After excision of a preauricular sinus, a head bandage compressive dressing is usually used to reduce dead space and to decrease the risk of recurrence. However, such use of a head bandage may cause various problems. We assessed a new method of compressive dressing, using suture transfixion of silicone sheets to the former sinus tract, following preauricular sinus excision.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviewed the medical records of patients undergoing preauricular sinus excision in a tertiary referral centre over a five-year period. After excision of the preauricular sinus,
