BACKGROUND: Menopause, modeled by ovariectomy (OVX) in rodents, causes cognitive decline and emotional disturbances due to estrogen withdrawal. While probiotics and aerobic exercise independently show beneficial effects, their combined contribution remains poorly characterized. This study investigated whether concurrent administration of Lactobacillus plantarum and aerobic exercise alleviates cognitive and behavioral deficits in OVX rats.
METHODS: Fifty female Wistar rats (9-12 weeks old) were randomly allocated into five groups (n=10/group): Sham, OVX+PBS, OVX+Exercise (Exe), OVX+L. plantaru

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Around the world, college students physical and mental health is deteriorating. Finding practical ways to enhance college students health is crucial. One of the traditional Chinese Qigong exercises is Baduanjin, which is possibly one of the most efficient workout techniques out there. However, it is unknown how Baduanjin practice may affect college students health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Qigong Baduanjin on the physical and mental health of female college freshmen.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 78 female college students were recrui

Prior work has shown a number of similarities between obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders such as perfectionism and depressive symptoms. However, distress and impairment due to eating pathology are also highly comorbid with other disorders, which brings into question whether the relationship with eating pathology is unique to OCD. The aims of the current study were 1) to test perfectionism and depression as mediators of the relationship between OCD and eating pathology, and 2) to determine whether OCD is related to greater distress/impairment regarding eating habits, exerc

OBJECTIVE: There is a growing body of literature suggesting the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) negatively impacts mental health in individuals self-reporting an eating disorder (ED); however, limited pediatric data is available about the impact COVID-19 has had on youth with EDs, specifically Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Our study uses a cross-sectional design to explore differences in ED symptoms between adolescents diagnosed with AN during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to a retrospective cohort of adolescents for whom these measures were previously collected, prior to the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Chinese medical workers suffer from a high incidence of mental health problems, resulting in reduced efficiency, increased medical malpractice, rising medical costs, and other issues. The effective alleviation of mental health problems among medical workers is therefore an important focus of research and social attention.
METHODS: The mental health of 842 medical workers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University in Fuzhou, China was evaluated between February 2016 and March 2016. Sixty-two worker

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While regular physical activity provides many health benefits, exercise can cause more harm than good when done excessively to the point where a person loses control. This condition has been called various names, but the most accurate term is 'exercise addiction' (EA) because it reflects both compulsive behavior and dependence. EA is classified as a non-substance-related addictive disorder, or behavioral addiction, and has been the subject of research for over fifty years. However, it is not officially recognized in major diagnostic systems, mainly due to significant conce

Alongside excessive physical activity, individuals with eating disorders (EDs) frequently report a heightened urge to move and physical restlessness, which may contribute to both somatic and psychological burden. The State Urge to be Physically Active Questionnaire (SUPA-Q) specifically measures this acute, state-like dimension in ED patients, but a validated Italian version is not yet available. Two hundred thirty-three inpatients (93.6% female; Mage = 31.7 ± 14.3) formally diagnosed with EDs completed the SUPAQ-I alongside measures of compulsive exercise, exercise addiction, impulsivity, and

PURPOSE: To provide a prospective 2 year follow-up of a previously enrolled adolescent high school sample, regarding body image and eating concerns, and patterns of sports type and physical activity.
METHODS: Sports type, weekly time devoted to it, and psychopathological self-reports (Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire 6.0, Body Uneasiness Test, and Muscle Dysmorphia Disorder Inventory) were evaluated longitudinally in a general population sample enrolled in a previous study, testing prospective variations in an observational setting.
RESULTS: At follow-up, girls expressed increased

Weight control methods used by a group of bulimic patients were studied, analyzing the relationship among compensatory strategies and other clinical variables. Sixty-nine female consecutive patients who sought help for DSM-IV bulimia nervosa were recruited for the study. The prevalence and frequency of use of binge eating and six compensatory methods (vomiting, laxatives, diuretics, diet pills, fasting, and compulsive exercise) were assessed in each patient. Factor analysis was used to group the variables, and a cluster analysis was performed on a second step. The clinical variables were final

BACKGROUND: Non-substance-related addictive behaviours have traditionally been treated separately from substance use disorders. However, the DSM-5 reclassification of gambling disorder within Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders has opened new avenues for research. This decision was justified by the similarities in the phenomenology, psychological, neurobiological, and genetic correlates across these disorders. Through a comprehensive systematic analysis, we aimed to identify factors associated with gambling disorder and examine their involvement in candidate behavioural addictions to ass

Background/Objectives: Muscle dysmorphia (MD), a subtype of body dysmorphic disorder, is prevalent among males who engage in the non-medical use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AASs) and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). These individuals often experience severe psychopathology, including mood instability, compulsivity, and a distorted body image. Despite its clinical severity, no randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have evaluated structured psychological treatments in this subgroup. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a manualized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) protocol in reduc

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with significant individual mental and physical suffering and public health burden and fewer than half of patients recover fully with current treatments. Comorbid exercise dependence (ExD) is common in AN and associated with significantly worse symptom severity and treatment outcomes. Research points to cognitive inflexibility as a prominent executive function inefficiency and transdiagnostic etiologic and maintaining mechanism linking AN and ExD. This study will evaluate the initial efficacy of adjunctive Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT), whic

Research over the past few decades has focused on the therapeutic effects of physical exercise among those affected by mood disorders. Only recently has attention turned to maladaptive and persistent expressions of anxiety, with a growing body of evidence indicating promise for exercise as an effective treatment for some of the anxiety disorders. The current review provides a comprehensive account of contemporary research examining the anxiolytic effects of exercise for anxiety disorders. We synthesize pertinent research regarding the effects of various types of exercise within the different a

Because of increasing participation in leisure sports and exercise rehabilitation programs, many patients are developing nonsurgical, soft tissue overuse syndromes. Many of these musculoskeletal problems arise because of underlying biomechanical difficulties, training errors, or improper use of equipment. Epidemiologic observations reveal that these individuals frequently visit a general medical practitioner before seeking the advice of an orthopedic specialist. Prompt diagnosis simply requires an appreciation of anatomy and an analytic understanding of sports biomechanics. Although compulsive

BACKGROUND: Aetiological studies of eating disorders would benefit from a solution to the problem of instability of eating disorder symptoms. We present an approach to defining an eating disorders phenotype based on the retrospective assessment of lifetime eating disorders symptoms to define a lifetime pattern of illness. We further validate this approach by testing the most common lifetime categories for differences in the prevalence of specific childhood personality traits.
METHOD: Ninety-seven females participated in this study, 35 with a current diagnosis of restricting anorexia nervosa,

A feared possible self refers to the unwanted characteristics that a person may possess or develop. We tested an experimental paradigm to target fear of possible self using imagery rescripting. A student sample (n = 91), with moderate obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms, engaged in written and audio-guided exercises to evoke episodic future mental imagery that represented their feared possible self. Participants were then randomized between imagery rescripting or neutral imagery control tasks. The results revealed no difference between conditions in fear of self or general obsessional belie

In this manuscript, we describe the soft- and hardware architecture as well as the implementation of a modern Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) system for sensor-assisted telepsychotherapy. It enables telepsychotherapy sessions in which the patient exercises therapy-relevant behaviors in their home environment under the remote supervision of the therapist. Wearable sensor information (electrocardiogram (ECG), movement sensors, and eye tracking) is streamed in real time to the therapist to deliver objective information about specific behavior-triggering situations and the stress level of the pa

BACKGROUND: Behavioural addictions (BAs) can be understood as disorders characterized by repetitive occurrence of impulsive and uncontrolled behaviours. Very few studies have investigated their association with mood disorders. The present study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of the main behavioural addictions in a sample of bipolar outpatients in euthymic phase or stabilised by medications and to investigate the role of impulsivity and temperamental and character dimensions.
METHODS: One-hundred-fifty-eight Bipolar Disorder (BD) (DSM-IV) outpatients were assessed with tests design

While facets of both anxiety and impulsivity appear central to the development and maintenance of bulimia nervosa (BN), specific BN behaviors may be propagated by differing profiles of risk. The current study examined associations between dimensions of anxiety and impulsivity and BN symptoms (binge eating, vomiting, laxative misuse, driven exercise), both in terms of the presence of such behaviors and their frequency. Two hundred and four women (Mage = 25.7 years) who met DSM-IV criteria for full or subthreshold BN completed self-report measures of perfectionism (Frost Multidimensional Perfect
