A Surgical Simulator for Tympanostomy Tube Insertion Incorporating Capacitive Sensing Technology to Track Instrument Placement.

We describe a device engineered for realistic simulation of myringotomy and tympanostomy tube insertion that tracks instrument placement and objectively measures operator proficiency. A 3-dimensional computer model of the external ear and cartilaginous external auditory canal was created from a normal maxillofacial computed tomography scan, and models for the bony external auditory canal and tympanic cavity were created with computer-aided design software. Physical models were 3-dimensionally printed from the computer reconstructions. The external auditory canal and tympanic cavity surfaces we

Cytoplasmic tutor: a program for teaching interpretation of a microscope-based laboratory test.

Antibodies to cytoplasmic antigens can be identified with a microscope-based indirect immunofluorescence assay that uses a mouse stomach-kidney substrate. The antibodies are diagnostic markers in chronic active hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, pernicious anemia, and other autoimmune diseases. We describe the development and features of an image-based computer program for teaching medical technologists and other health care workers the proper interpretation of cytoplasmic fluorescence staining patterns. The program, called Cytoplasmic Tutor, is written in Microsoft Visual Basic for Windows

Discrimination training of phonemic contrasts enhances phonological processing in mainstream school children.

Auditory perceptual learning has been proposed as effective for remediating impaired language and for enhancing normal language development. We examined the effect of phonemic contrast discrimination training on the discrimination of whole words and on phonological awareness in 8- to 10-year-old mainstream school children. Eleven phonemic contrast continua were synthesised using linear interpolation coding from real speaker endpoints. Thirty children were pre-tested on the Word Discrimination Test (WDT) and the Phonological Assessment Battery (PhAB). Eighteen then trained for 12 x 30min sessio

[Developing authoring tools for web-based multi-media orthopedics education modules].

In the framework of the EC-Project VOEU ("Virtual Orthopaedic European University"), authoring tools have been developed to support the implementation of online interactive courses for multimedia orthopaedic educational modules. Based on the pedagogical concept of case-based, problem-oriented learning, different user-interaction scenarios and Learning Objects (LOs) were analyzed and developed. Each LO acts as an interactive dialogue presenting one kind of question with certain rules and interactions. The multimedia course content entailing anamnesis, diagnosis and therapy is managed in a datab

Using an E-learning activity to enhance student nurses' understanding of cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Nurses often lack the knowledge and expertise to work with older people with cognitive impairment, which includes dementia, delirium and depression. This is due in part to deficits in their basic nursing education related to older people and managing the care needs of people with cognitive impairment. We developed an e-learning activity to facilitate student nurses' knowledge of cognitive impairment. OBJECTIVES: To test if the e-learning activity could improve student nurses' knowledge of cognitive impairment and whether they would find the style of learning beneficial. DESIGN: A

Reducing worry and subjective health complaints: A randomized trial of an internet-delivered worry postponement intervention.

OBJECTIVES: Several studies have shown that perseverative, worrisome thoughts are prospectively related to subjective health complaints (SHC) and that a short worry postponement intervention can decrease these complaints. As SHC and worry are prevalent and costly, we tested whether the intervention can be offered online to reduce these complaints in the general population. DESIGN: A randomized parallel-group trial was conducted with self-selected participants from the general population. METHODS: Via the research website, 996 participants were instructed to register their worrying for 6 cons

E-learning-based speech therapy: a web application for speech training.

Abstract In The Netherlands, a web application for speech training, E-learning-based speech therapy (EST), has been developed for patients with dysarthria, a speech disorder resulting from acquired neurological impairments such as stroke or Parkinson's disease. In this report, the EST infrastructure and its potentials for both therapists and patients are elucidated. EST provides patients with dysarthria the opportunity to engage in intensive speech training in their own environment, in addition to undergoing the traditional face-to-face therapy. Moreover, patients with chronic dysarthria can u

3D Heart: a new visual training method for electrocardiographic analysis.

This new training method is based on developing a sound understanding of the sequence in which electrical excitation spreads through both the normal and the infarcted myocardium. The student is made aware of the cardiac electrical performance through a series of 3-dimensional pictures during the excitation process. The electrocardiogram 3D Heart 3-dimensional program contains a variety of different activation simulations. Currently, this program enables the user to view the activation simulation for all of the following pathology examples: normal activation; large, medium, and small anterior m

Comparison of video-based and presentation-based self-directed instruction for learning basic neuroangiography.

BACKGROUND: Digital tools and simulation-based learning are playing an increasingly important role in medical education. Earlier studies have shown that video and virtual reality can be just as effective for teaching clinical skills as presentation-based teaching methods. This exploratory study compared two standardized self-directed instructional formats, video-based and presentation-based instruction, for teaching basic neuroangiographic skills. In addition to comparing objective and subjective learning outcomes between instructional formats, the study explored whether prior angiography expe

SonoGame - more than just a game: Evaluation of an ultrasound training platform.

Ultrasound examination is a vital imaging tool in medicine, yet opportunities for comprehensive theoretical and practical training during medical education are limited. Effective ultrasound education requires both theoretical knowledge and hands-on practice. To address this, we developed SonoGame, a gamified platform designed to teach ultrasound skills to medical students. SonoGame provides a step-by-step introduction to ultrasound imaging and aims to improve skills such as image orientation, spatial visualization, and hand-eye-coordination through mini-games using geometric objects. This stud

Development and implementation of educational modules on management of neonates with critical congenital heart disease in the delivery room (LEARN-CHD).

BACKGROUND: Neonates with congenital heart disease may require delivery room interventions beyond standard care. Because existing guidelines and educational programs rarely address these needs, we developed and evaluated targeted educational modules. METHODS: Teams were randomized to online eLearning modules or directed readings. Individual pre-/post-knowledge scores were compared. Team performance was tested in simulated delivery scenarios including abruption, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, d-transposition of great arteries and congenital complete heart block. RESULTS: 32 teams from 9 cen

The effect of an e-learning module on grading variation of (pre)malignant breast lesions.

Histologic grade is a biomarker that is widely used to guide treatment of invasive breast cancer (IBC) and ductal carcinoma in situ of the breast (DCIS). Yet, currently, substantial grading variation between laboratories and pathologists exists in daily pathology practice. This study was conducted to evaluate whether an e-learning may be a feasible tool to decrease grading variation of (pre)malignant breast lesions. An e-learning module, representing the key-concepts of grading (pre)malignant breast lesions through gold standard digital images, was designed. Pathologists and residents could ta
