Abstract words are hard to acquire; Does social relevance help?

Theories of language and conceptual development have proposed that social relevance is helpful for understanding and acquiring the meanings of abstract words. However, there have been few direct tests of these relationships. In the present study, we used a newly quantified measure of word socialness, alongside word concreteness and valence ratings, to determine if children acquire more social abstract words earlier than less social abstract words. Our analysis included 4,047 words and examined the relationships among word socialness, valence, concreteness, and frequency in relation to age of a

Spatiotemporal dynamics of abstract concept processing: An MEG study.

Our current understanding of how linguistic concepts are represented and retrieved in the brain is largely based on studies using concrete language, and only few studies have focused on the neural correlates of abstract concepts. The role of the motor system, besides the classical language network, has been intensively discussed in action-related concrete concepts. To advance our understanding of spatiotemporal dynamics underlying abstract concept processing, our study investigated to what extent language and motor regions are engaged in the processing of abstract concepts vs. concrete concept

The Dimensional Conceptualization of Personality Disorders: Personality Organization, Personality Functioning, and Personality Disorders.

Over the past several decades, significant criticism of the categorical classification system for personality disorders has highlighted the need to transition to a dimensional classification system. This study reviewed key issues involved in the potential conversion of the diagnostic system of personality disorders from a categorical to a dimensional model. The result suggests that Kernberg's concept of personality organization can be used to indicate the overall severity of personality pathology.

"Even when you write with a pencil there is an eraser to clean it": Examining men's conceptualisations of and involvement in emergency contraceptive use in Accra, Ghana.

Emergency contraceptive pills are an essential and unique post-coital method to avoid a pregnancy, with evidence showing the significant role men can have in procurement and decisions to use. Global Health recommendations specify that emergency contraceptive pills be used sparingly and under specific conditions. This increasingly misaligns with the myriad conceptualisations and rationales among the public for why they choose to use emergency contraceptive pills. There has been a paucity of research aiming to understanding men's involvement and how they shape women's access, choice, and autonom

Moving toward a conceptualization of measurable residual disease in myelodysplastic syndromes.

Approximately 90% of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs) have somatic mutations that are known or suspected to be oncogenic in the malignant cells. The genetic risk stratification of MDSs has evolved substantially with the introduction of the clinical molecular international prognostic scoring system, which establishes next-generation sequencing at diagnosis as a standard of care. Furthermore, the International Consensus Classification of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemias has refined the MDS diagnostic criteria with the introduction of a new MDS/acute myeloid leukemia category.

Multiple chemical sensitivity scoping review protocol: overview of research and MCS construct.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) has been characterised by reported adverse responses to environmental exposures of common chemical agents (eg, perfumes, paint, cleaning products and other inhaled or ingested agents) in low doses considered non-toxic for the general population. There is currently no consensus on whether MCS can be established as a distinct disorder. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review of the literature will be guided by five questions: How is MCS defined and which diagnostic criteria have been proposed? What methods are used to report prevalence and inci

The neural bases of taxonomic and thematic conceptual relations: an MEG study.

Converging evidence from behavioral and neuroimaging studies of human concepts indicate distinct neural systems for taxonomic and thematic knowledge. A recent study of naming in aphasia found involvement of the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) during taxonomic (feature-based) processing, and involvement of the temporoparietal junction (TPJ) during thematic (function-based) processing. We conducted an online magnetoencephalography (MEG) study to examine the spatio-temporal nature of taxonomic and thematic relations. We measured participants' brain responses to words preceded by either a taxonomical

Causal capture: contextual effects on the perception of collision events.

In addition to perceiving the colors, shapes, and motions of objects, observers can perceive higher-level properties of visual events. One such property is causation, as when an observer sees one object cause another object to move by colliding with it. We report a striking new type of contextual effect on the perception of such collision events. Consider an object (A) that moves toward a stationary object (B) until they are adjacent, at which point A stops and B starts moving along the same path. Such "launches" are perceived in terms beyond these kinematics: As noted in Michotte's classic st

Making explicit 3-year-olds' implicit competence with their own false beliefs.

Three-year-olds usually fail to recall a previous false belief once they have discovered the true state of affairs. The failure is so dramatic that researchers have treated it as a case of functional retrograde amnesia. We found in a series of studies that the memory trace is indeed available but is inaccessible under traditional testing procedures. We also provided a new prediction that reminding children that they had briefly held a picture of an object would be a more powerful retrieval cue than a reminder that they had held the small object itself. It was further shown that an effective pi

Absence of compensation and reasoning-like processes in the perception of orientation in depth.

When errors are present in the perceived depth between the parts of a physically stationary object, the object appears to rotate as the head is moved laterally (Gogel, 1980). This illusory rotation has been attributed either to compensation (Wallach, 1985, 1987) or to inferential-like processes (Rock, 1983). Alternatively, the perceived distances of and directions to the parts of the object are sufficient to explain the illusory perceived orientations and perceived rotations of the stimulus. This was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, a perceived illusory orientation of a stimulus

Qualitative descriptions of error recovery patterns across reading level and sentence type: an eye movement analysis.

Purposes of the present study included describing a variety of error recovery patterns based on eye movement (EM) measures of sentence parsing across reading level and error type. A qualitative pattern analysis of EM mappings was completed for students with reading disabilities (n = 10) and nondisabled students (n = 10) who were parsing control and erred sentences. Independent variables included error type (syntactically ambiguous, semantically anomalous, and control sentences) and reading proficiency level. Dependent variables consisted of seven eye movement measures. Chi-square analyses were

A probabilistic contrast model of causal induction.

Deviations from the predictions of covariational models of causal attribution have often been reported in the literature. These include a bias against using consensus information, a bias toward attributing effects to a person, and a tendency to make a variety of unpredicted conjunctive attributions. It is contended that these deviations, rather than representing irrational biases, could be due to (a) unspecified information over which causal inferences are computed and (b) the questionable normativeness of the models against which these deviations have been measured. A probabilistic extension

Cognitive impairment in alcoholics.

The research literature shows that, as a result of chronic alcohol abuse, there occur impairments in abstract reasoning, problem-solving, and perceptual-motor functioning. In an earlier study, Tamkin (1983) obtained significant differences between alcoholics and paired neurotic inpatient controls only on abstract reasoning measured on the Weigl Color-Form Sorting Test. Verbal functions and recall of designs showed no group differences. This study sought to replicate the Weigl test results and to examine other types of cognitive impairments in alcoholics relative to published norms. The study s

On the comprehension of questions by nonspeaking children.

The question form presents both a semantic and linguistic problem to deaf and other language impaired children. The wh question requires a pronominal reference system to be well-established before the wh question can be comprehended and produced. The present study describes the language competence of a deaf, partially sighted girl who acquired language by reading it. This child neither hears nor speaks. Communication with her family was accomplished by writing in her hand, gestures, and pictures. The present study explores pronominal reference in relation to wh questions. A method of teaching

Differential Development of Object and Location Processing is a Critical Factor to a Child's Passing or Failing Explicit False-Belief Tasks.

It is well-documented that 5-year-olds consistently pass explicit false-belief tasks-one of the most common tests for assessing "Theory of Mind" (ToM). But what about younger children? While some studies find that 3- and 4-year-olds fail explicit false-belief tasks, other studies find that these same age children pass such tasks, leading to confusion about exactly when, and why, children pass false-belief tasks. Traditionally, explicit false-belief tasks include scenarios with object changes (e.g., Smarties task) or location changes (e.g., Sally-Anne task). However, object and location informa

Safe Mobility in Hospitalised Older Adults: A Concept Analysis.

AIM: To conduct a concept analysis of 'safe mobility', with specific application in hospitalised older adults, identifying its defining attributes, antecedents and consequences. BACKGROUND: The promotion of safe mobility is essential for maintaining the functionality of hospitalised older adults. However, this idea is not yet clearly defined in the scientific literature, requiring a conceptual analysis for better understanding and applicability in nursing practice. DESIGN: Concept analysis. METHODS: The concept analysis methodology of Walker and Avant was employed, consisting of eight steps

Introduction to the Special Issue: Conceptualization, Assessment, and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Co-Occurring Conditions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has a lifetime prevalence of 1%-2% and typically presents as a chronic condition with significant functional impairment. Comorbidity with OCD is the norm, with 90% of individuals with OCD also meeting diagnostic criteria for a co-occurring condition. Co-occurring conditions can complicate the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of OCD, such as by intensifying existing symptoms, obscuring differential diagnosis of phenotypically and functionally similar symptoms, and interfering with cognitive behavioral treatment. This two-part special issue reviews

Disability-competence training influences health care providers' conceptualizations of disability: An evaluation study.

BACKGROUND: Often, health care providers' approach to people with disabilities is grounded in a medical model perspective. This view highlights individual deficits and does not foster patient-centeredness. Learning about and adopting a more social model, focused on creating accessible and inclusive approaches and environments, could help providers to reshape their attitudes about disability, dismantling barriers to care. OBJECTIVE: This study used innovative methods to evaluate a recorded, online disability-competence training for health care providers. It was hypothesized that the training w

Multimodal semantic battery to monitor progressive loss of concepts in the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia (svPPA): an innovative proposal.

Semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) is a rare neurodegenerative disease characterized by a progressive loss of semantic knowledge. Patients with svPPA show anomia, impaired word comprehension, poor object recognition, and difficulties in retrieving semantic information. svPPA is also a unique "natural" model that allows clinicians and cognitive neuroscientists to study the organization of semantic memory because only semantic knowledge is affected in the initial period of the disease, with relative sparing of other cognitive domains. In the clinical practice, semantic memory i

Early reading performance: a comparison of teacher-based and test-based assessments.

An unresolved question in early screening is whether test-based or teacher-based assessments should form the basis of the classification of children at risk of educational failure. Available structured teacher rating scales are lacking in predictive validity, and teacher predictions of students likely to experience reading difficulties have yielded disappointing true positive rates, with teachers failing to identify the majority of severely disabled readers. For this study, three educational screening instruments were developed: (a) a single teacher rating, categorizing children into three lev
