OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the performance of a natural rubber latex condom with a thickness of 42 µm, compared with two currently marketed alternatives.
STUDY DESIGN: In this blinded, three-way crossover, multicentre study, across four sites in Thailand, couples were randomized to receive one of three thicknesses of condom (42, 55, or 70 µm) at first visit. Couples received the remaining condoms at visits two and three, respectively. Participants were given seven condoms at each visit and asked to use at least five condoms of each thickness and report any clinical failures (slipp

OBJECTIVE: Sexual health services have the potential to encourage teenagers' condom use through both the free supply of condoms and counselling. This study investigated whether 15/16-year-olds who attended sexual health services used condoms more and had different beliefs about condoms compared to those who did not use these services.
METHODS: First, a cross-sectional multivariate model investigated the association between service visits and condom consistency (a ratio of the number of times a condom was used to the number of times a teenager had sexual intercourse in the past year) in teenag

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates men's and women's opinions of condom use and problems with it in real life.
METHODS: Random samples of men and women, aged 18-50 years, were drawn from the Finnish Population Register and were mailed a questionnaire on family planning. Response rates were 36% for men (706) and 58% for women (1136). Respondents were asked e.g. about condom use, whether they had had problems with it and why they used condoms. Moreover they were asked if they had received advice on how to use condoms.
RESULTS: Among both men and women 87% had at some time used condoms. Of all men

OBJECTIVES: To examine female adolescents' use of condoms before and after seeking their first prescription of oral contraceptives and to identify variables associated with use of oral contraceptives.
METHOD: This longitudinal study was conducted among 350 female adolescents recruited from 8 CLSCs in the Montreal Metropolitan Area. Data were collected at the first medical visit and again three months later.
RESULTS: At the 3-month follow-up, a decrease of 41% was observed in the systematic use of condoms with an inadequate use of condoms reported in 44% of subjects. In the last year, the var

The use of condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases, especially HIV, is widely encouraged. Condoms contain latex, nonspermicidal lubricants (such as dimethylsiliconium) and other nonspecified compounds, such as colorants and flavorings. Latex causes allergy reaction in susceptible individuals but little is known regarding the cytotoxic effects of other additives. The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive in vitro system to determine the toxic effects of condom material. The modified L929 FDA method and a more specific cell type, such as the cervical epithelial tumor cell l

OBJECTIVES: Lack of access to public sector condoms still presents a fundamental barrier to condom use in most of South Africa. This study investigated the determinants of condom procurement at public health facilities in order to inform improved public sector condom distribution and promotion strategies.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Twelve health facilities in four health regions of South Africa: Boland/Overberg, Empangeni/Jozini, Kimberley, and Pretoria.
SUBJECTS: Consecutive individuals procuring condoms and a sample of individuals not procuring condoms were interviewed on the

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Debate continues on the efficacy and safety of intravaginal nonoxynol-9 for the prevention of horizontal transmission of human immunodeficiency and other sexually transmitted diseases. Little attention has been paid to the effects of nonoxynol-9 contained in the lubricant of many condoms.
GOAL: To assess the tolerability of different levels of nonoxynol-9 in condom lubricants.
STUDY DESIGN: Pilot, randomized, controlled trial in 70 female prostitutes.
RESULTS: There was no association between dose of nonoxynol-9 and reported symptoms or signs of genital tract infl

Men attending 3 sexually transmissible disease clinics and a university health clinic in Sydney, Australia, were invited to complete a questionnaire on their use of condoms. Respondents were 108 male condom user volunteers aged 18 to 62 years; in the last five years 47 had had sex with men, 18 with both men and women and 43 only with women. They reported using a total of 4809 condoms in the previous 12 months (condoms worn by a male partner were not included). The overall breakage rate was 4.9% (including condoms breaking during application), while 3.1% of condoms reportedly slipped off. On a

A survey of 34 counselors on sexually transmitted diseases from a large Midwestern state was conducted to compare their responses to promote condom use with clients' attitudes and normative beliefs regarding condoms. Four vignettes were developed using predictor variables about condom use based on the theory of reasoned action (TRA). Results indicate subjects responded minimally to TRA variables mentioned in the vignettes. Moralistic messages about condoms were the most frequent responses reported, followed by those on education, disease prevention, and fear. In some cases information provided

To examine the occurrence of latex allergen in condoms and to study the symptoms caused by contact with condoms, 46 patients with latex-glove contact urticaria (LGCU) were investigated. 7 (24%) of the 29 patients with a history of condom use had experienced local swelling and/or pruritus during intercourse, confirming that condoms can cause local symptoms in latex allergic subjects. Prick tests performed on 16 different condom brands showed that 4 brands caused positive reactions in 52-67% of patients. The remaining 12 brands were not as allergenic and 1 brand was totally negative on prick tes

Questionnaire data from 479 heterosexual men 18-24 years old were analyzed for correlates of CAEP during application (CAEP-Application) and CAEP during penile-vaginal intercourse (CAEP-PVI). Potential correlates were self-efficacy (condom application, product selection, and maintaining arousal), condom perceptions (condom worry/distraction, negative condom perceptions, concerns about application speed), condom fit, and motivation to use condoms. We conclude that (1) experiencing CAEP may become a repeating cycle, both affecting and being affected by, worry and distraction related to losing ere

Intimate partner violence victimization has been linked to sexual HIV risk behavior among heterosexual women. The unique role of perpetration of intimate partner violence (IPV) in sexual risk behavior among men has not been studied as well. Based on interviews with 518 heterosexual men recruited via street-intercept between 2005 and 2007 in New York City, we assessed the relationship between perpetration of IPV against a main female partner and inconsistent condom use with that same partner, while controlling for condom use-related factors. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that men wh

In this 2000-2001 study, the authors compared the effectiveness of the male latex condom and the female polyurethane condom by assessing frequency and types of mechanical failure and by evaluating semen exposure during use. Eligible women from Birmingham, Alabama, were randomly assigned to begin the study with 10 male condoms and then switch to 10 female condoms (n = 55), or vice versa (n = 53), and were trained to use both types. Data collection included questionnaires for each condom use and measurement of prostate-specific antigen in specimens of vaginal fluid taken before and after interco

This paper uses retrospective event-history data covering a four-year period to examine the timing of exposure to HIV/AIDS education and social marketing condom promotion campaigns, relative to the timing of changes in sexual risk behaviour in Tanzania. Analysis of the event-history data shows that the process of exposure to AIDS education messages and exposure to brand advertising for Salama brand condoms was very different. While exposure to AIDS education was early and gradual, exposure to Salama brand condoms started later, but was much more rapid. After one year of advertising, over half

Condoms are most effective when they are applied before intercourse. This study assessed the prevalence of 'condom cheats'--instances of condom use in which the condom is put on after initial penetration. As part of a prospective study of safer sexual behaviour, 103 heterosexual tertiary students completed a condom use diary over a period of up to 6 months. Of the 464 condoms used by study participants, 13% were put on after initial penetration. Thirty-eight percent of condom users reported at least one instance of late application of a condom. Late application of condoms is common and places

Condom use resistance (CUR) through coercive tactics is a significant public health concern. The present study investigated CUR risk factors through an alcohol administration experiment using a sexual risk analog with a community sample of male nonproblem drinkers ( N = 321). Utilizing a path analysis framework, results demonstrated that men with more severe sexual aggression histories displayed stronger in-the-moment power and control responses, which was associated with greater coercive CUR and unprotected sex intentions. A significant interaction between sexual aggression history, risk rati

To date, most condom research has focused on young or high-risk groups, with little evidence about influences on condom use amongst lower-risk community samples. These groups are not risk free and may still wish to negotiate safer sex; yet the considerations involved could be different from those in higher-risk groups. Our research addresses this gap: We report a cross-sectional questionnaire study enquiring about recent condom use and future use intentions in community settings. Our sample (n = 311) purposively included couples in established relationships, known to be condom users. Items inc
