[National confidential enquiry into maternal deaths in France, a 25-year enhanced surveillance system, essential for the reliable characterization of maternal deaths].

Although maternal mortality is rare in wealthy countries, it remains a fundamental indicator of maternal health. It is considered to be a "sentinel event", the occurrence of which indicates dysfunctions, often cumulative, in the healthcare system. In addition to the classic epidemiological surveillance findings - number of deaths, maternal mortality ratio, distribution of medical causes, sub-groups of women at risk - its study, through a precise analysis of the history of each woman who died, enables to highlight areas for improvement in the content or organisation of care, the correction of w

A confidential inquiry estimating the number of patients affected with sickle cell disease and thalassemia major confirms the need for a prevention strategy in the Netherlands.

We have conducted a broad confidential inquiry among 401 hospital departments trying to estimate the number of patients affected with severe forms of hemoglobinopathies living in The Netherlands. With less than 30% response we have registered 559 patients in all age categories of whom 77.0% are affected with sickle cell disease and 17.5% with beta-thalassemia (thal) major. We estimate that the real figure could be around 800 patients, a figure more than six times higher than the number published in 1995 on which the reluctance to offer prevention was based. The actual figures and the incidence

Face-to-face, confidential and health worker-led: Understanding the preferences for behavioral health services among people with HIV in Lesotho.

Behavioral treatments can help people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) improve their quality of life and treatment adherence. In Lesotho, where a fifth of adults live with HIV and depression and harmful alcohol use is prevalent among this group, little is known about the local suitability of established behavioral treatment strategies. We explored preferences regarding two strategies evaluated in other settings: involving phones and trusted individuals in treatment. We thematically analyzed 28 semi-structured interviews with potential service users receiving routine HIV care in the Buth

Interim results in clinical trials: do we need to keep all interim randomised clinical trial results confidential?

OBJECTIVES: Guidelines for the conduct of clinical trials emphasize the importance of keeping the interim results from the main endpoints confidential, in order to maintain the integrity of the trial and to safeguard patients' interests. However, is this essential in every situation? MATERIALS AND METHODS: We review the evidence for these guidelines and consider recent randomised trials that have released interim results, to assess their impact on the success of the trial. However, because the strength of opinion to keep interim results confidential is so strong, there are limited examples of

[Epidemiology of maternal mortality by infectious cause in France, 2007-2009, using data from confidential maternal mortality report].

Although deaths caused by infection during pregnancy and the postpartum period are rare in France, mortality rates have increased in several countries of the European community. In France, the rate of maternal mortality by infectious cause has decreased over the last 12 years. Infectious causes are currently in fifth place of maternal deaths. Over the period 2007-2009, 18 deaths occurred, eight by direct infectious causes and 10 by indirect infectious causes. Among the 18 deaths, 17 were examined by the National Expert Committee on Maternal Mortality (CNEMM) with the objectives to determine th

Reports on Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths: management strategies based on trends in maternal cardiac deaths over 30 years.

In the latest Report of the Confidential Enquiries into Maternal and Child Health (CEMACH; formerly Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths (CEMD)), cardiac disease was the second commonest cause of maternal mortality. Currently there is much emphasis on appropriate referral and multidisciplinary planning for women with known cardiac disease. However, examining all maternal cardiac deaths in the CEMACH/CEMD reports over the last 30 years, to see whether the condition was known before pregnancy or developed during pregnancy, suggests that while reported maternal mortality due to cardiac dis

Trojan horse? The perils of a private health insurers' buying group for clinical independence, patient confidentiality, and the viability of private hospital care.

Private psychiatric care comprises outpatient as well as private hospital care. The three major funders of private hospital care in Australia are private health insurers, the Australian federal government and, through out-of-pocket costs not covered by the preceding, individual patients. Three big companies, Medibank, BUPA, and nib, dominate the private health insurance market in Australia, resulting in high returns on equity, while private hospitals are being progressively squeezed, resulting in falling profits and a loss in 2024-25. Nonetheless, private health insurers have sought increased

Investigating the impact of stigma, accessibility and confidentiality on STI/STD/HIV self-testing among college students in the USA: protocol for a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: In 2019, there were 2.5 million reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in the USA, young people aged 15-24 made up 61% and 42% of chlamydia and gonorrhoea cases, respectively. Moreover, the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were reported among college-aged students. In this paper, we outline our protocol to systematically review the published literature on, the use of STI/HIV self-test kits, increasing STI/HIV testing uptake, and stigma, access and confidentiality issues, among young adul

Informal confidential voting interviewing in a sexual risk assessment of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgenders (hijra) in Bangalore, India.

OBJECTIVE: The accuracy of self-reporting sensitive sexual risk behaviours is highly susceptible to misreporting. Informal confidential voting interviews (ICVIs) may minimise social desirability bias by increasing the privacy of the interview setting. The objective was to investigate determinants of risky behaviour among men who have sex with men (MSM) and 'hijra' (transgenders) reported through two interviewing tools: ICVIs and face-to-face interviews (FTFIs). METHODS: Cluster random sampling was used to recruit MSM in 85 cruising sites in Bangalore, including eight hammams (bath houses) and

Data Sharing, Biopsies and Patient Confidentiality in a Precision Medicine Trial for Childhood Cancer: A Mixed Method Study of Parents, Oncologists, and Scientists' Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: Precision medicine is transforming care for children with cancer, but raises new challenges. We explored parents', oncologists' and scientists' perspectives on three aspects of a precision medicine trial for poor prognosis childhood cancer: data sharing, requests for additional tumor biopsies, and confidentiality. Methods: Data were collected through PRISM-Impact, a psychosocial sub-study within the Zero Childhood Cancer Program's PRISM trial. Parents completed questionnaires at enrolment and one year later, and an optional interview after receiving their child's trial r

Access to and engagement with healthcare services among women with Children's Social Care involvement during the perinatal period who subsequently died: a confidential enquiry.

INTRODUCTION: In the last decade, UK maternal death surveillance data have shown that among the women who died during pregnancy and the year after birth (the perinatal period), the proportion of women with Children's Social Care (CSC) involvement nearly doubled. Parental non-engagement in the context of CSC involvement has been described as a particular professional concern. OBJECTIVE: To explore organisational and system barriers when accessing and engaging with healthcare services experienced by women with CSC involvement who subsequently died during the perinatal period. METHODS: MBRRACE-

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and questioning youth: the importance of a sensitive and confidential sexual history in identifying the risk and implementing treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

STIs are one consequence of specific risk-taking behaviors, not sexual orientation. Providers who care for adolescents should be aware of the STIs for which LGBTQ youth are at risk and the necessary screening (see Table 1). Although it is vital to recognize that LGBTQ youth are at risk for STIs, it is important not to view the youth within this narrow perspective. LGBTQ youth, like all adolescents, should be appreciated for their individuality, idealism, and resiliency. Most LGBTQ youth emerge from adolescence as productive and healthy adults. Treating adolescents with understanding and respec

A setback for Sustainable Development Goal 3.1: Documenting the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic's impact on maternal mortality through a National Confidential Enquiry in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality highlights health system effectiveness and social fairness. South Africa's Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths (CEMD) monitors and improves maternal healthcare. While initial decreases in maternal mortality were positive, the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing provincial inequalities jeopardise reaching the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target. AIM: This analysis evaluated South Africa's maternal mortality reduction path by examining CEMD data trends, the pandemic's effect and provincial disparities to gauge progress towards its SDG commitments. METHODS:
