Several lines of evidence suggest that amyloid deposition in the brain contributes to neuronal degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the AD brain, diffuse plaques composed mostly of amorphous beta amyloid (Am-beta A) are inert, whereas compact plaques composed of beta amyloid fibrils (Fib-beta A) are associated with neurodegenerative changes. ZnO/SnO2 hetero-nanofibers about 250 nm in diameter and several micrometers in length are synthesized via an electrospun method using zinc chloride and stannous chloride as inorganic sources. Fibrillary glomerulonephritis is a rare cause of proteinuric kidney disease characterized by Congo red-negative fibrillary deposits and typically shows DNAJB9 positivity on immunohistochemistry. Amyloidosis is defined by Congo red positivity and can be typed by laser microdissection-tandem mass spectrometry when routine studies are inconclusive. We report the case of a 64-year-old man with proteinuria and declining kidney function whose kidney biopsy showed DNAJB9-positive fibrillary glomerulonephritis in glomeruli, but Congo red-positive deposits confined to the medulla were DNAJB9 negative.

BACKGROUND: Light-chain amyloidosis (AL) is the most common form of systemic amyloidosis. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of laboratory tests for light-chain clonality and bone marrow (BM) findings in AL amyloidosis.

A total of 130 Listeria strains were tested in order to evaluate lecithinase production and capacity for Congo red adsorption as markers of pathogenicity. The strains were identified according to acid production from sugars and by the CAMP test and the data were correlated with the ability to produce keratoconjunctivitis in guinea pigs. L. monocytogenes cultures presented 51.8% and 88.8% positivity rates for Congo red adsorption and lecithinase production, respectively, whereas 80.8% and 100% for L. innocua cultures were negative for the two test, respectively.

Our previous work demonstrated that electric vagal stimulation in conjunction with Congo red as a dye-indicator is the faster and more reliable method for delineating the corpus-antral boundary in rats. Based on this finding, our study was extended to a larger animal model, the dog; this study proved the electrical vagal stimulation along with Congo red is a reliable method for adequate demonstration of this corpus-antral boundary. No untoward effect on the cardiac function was observed during stimulation of subdiaphragmatic portion of vagal trunks.

AIM: Pre-eclampsia (PE) causes significant maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Current diagnostic methods, such as blood pressure monitoring and proteinuria measurement, have poor sensitivity and specificity. Although biomarkers like PlGF and sFlt-1 improve diagnostic accuracy, their clinical value is limited by cost and infrastructural constraints. The Congo red dot (CRD) test, which identifies misfolded proteins via urinary congophilia, has emerged as a low-cost, noninvasive alternative for detecting PE.

A 55-year old woman was seen at the outpatient Dermatology department with orange-red, soft-elastic, asymptomatic papules on her abdomen since five years. A case of localized amyloidosis of the urethra is reported. A 42-year-old man visited with the complaint of urethral discharge and urethral tumor on May 24, 1985. A small fingertip sized, elastic hard mass was present on the left side of the external urethral meatus. Cold cup biopsy of the urethral tumor was done. Histological examination of the tumor showed amorphous eosinophilic tissue staining. Green birefringence indicating amyloidosis by Congo red staining was observed under polarized light microscope. Since the patient's symptoms were minimal, no specific therapy was instituted.
