Minimal Clinically Important Differences With the Outcomes of the App-Based Japanese Allergic Conjunctival Diseases Quality of Life Questionnaire: Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Assessing changes in quality of life in patients with hay fever-related allergic conjunctivitis requires validated and clinically meaningful metrics. A minimal clinically important difference (MCID) that can be applied to assess Domain II of the Japanese Allergic Conjunctival Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (JACQLQ) in a smartphone app setting has yet to be determined. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional observational study aimed to determine MCIDs for the app-based JACQLQ in assessing hay fever-related allergic conjunctivitis. METHODS: This study used data from a crowdsourced,

Abnormal Expression of lncRNA SNHG7 in Dry Eye Disease and Its Effect on Human Conjunctival Epithelial Cells.

Analyzing the pathogenic mechanism of dry eye disease provides a new research point for the treatment of patients. A total of 86 patients with dry eye disease and the same number of healthy individuals were recruited as the patient group and normal group. The levels of small nucleolar RNA host gene 7 (SNHG7) in tear samples and human conjunctival epithelial cells (HCECs) were determined by a quantitative real-time PCR (RT-qPCR). Meanwhile, TNF-α and IL-6 mRNA levels in HCECs were also detected by RT-qPCR. The molecular mechanism of SNHG7 was analyzed by biological prediction and luciferase act

Conjunctival Inflammatory Gene Expression Profiling in Dry Eye Disease: Correlations With HLA-DRA and HLA-DRB1.

Purpose: In several multicenter clinical trials, HLA-DR was found to be a potential biomarker of dry eye disease (DED)'s severity and prognosis. Given the fact that HLA-DR receptor is a heterodimer consisting in an alpha and a beta chain, we intended to investigate the correlation of inflammatory targets with the corresponding transcripts, HLA-DRA and HLA-DRB1, to characterize specific targets closely related to HLA-DR expressed in conjunctival cells from patients suffering from DED of various etiologies. Methods: A prospective study was conducted in 88 patients with different forms of DED. Oc

Multiple cytokines in human tear specimens in seasonal and chronic allergic eye disease and in conjunctival fibroblast cultures.

BACKGROUND: Several cytokines are involved in the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells in ocular allergic diseases. The purpose of the study was to assay multiple cytokines and chemokines in tears, to compare subgroups of allergic conjunctivitis (AC) with controls, and in culture supernatants to determine whether conjunctival fibroblasts produce some of these cytokines. METHODS: Fifty to one hundred microlitre tears were obtained from patients with active seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC; n=12), vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC; n=18), atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC; n=6) a

Therapeutic potentials of human microfluidic encapsulated conjunctival mesenchymal stem cells on the rat model of Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the destruction of the dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway, leading to motor-behavioral complications. Cell therapy has been proposed as a promising approach for PD treatment using various cellular sources. Despite a few disadvantages mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represent, they have more auspicious effects for PD cell therapy. The present study aimed to evaluate a new source of MSCs isolated from human Conjunctiva (CJ-MSCs) impact on PD complications for the first time. MATERIALS

The Usage of a Conjunctival Flap to Improve Retention of Boston Type 1 Keratoprosthesis in Severe Ocular Surface Disease.

PURPOSE: The Boston keratoprostheses type 1 devices (KPro) are utilized in cases unfavorable to penetrating keratoplasty. The prognosis remains guarded in cases of ocular surface disease due to risk of tissue necrosis. We describe a novel surgical approach using a conjunctival flap with a delayed opening to improve retention. METHODS: In three patients with advanced cicatrizing conjunctivitis, a Type 1 keratoprosthesis was stabilized using a full tarsal conjunctival flap. Three months postoperatively, an opening was created in the flap overlying the optical portion of the device. RESULTS: Al

Conjunctival chlamydial 16S ribosomal RNA expression in trachoma: is chlamydial metabolic activity required for disease to develop?

BACKGROUND: Nucleic acid amplification testing frequently detects conjunctival Chlamydia trachomatis infection in subjects without clinical signs of trachoma. It is unclear whether such subjects are actually infected. We measured chlamydial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) expression, a marker of chlamydial metabolic activity, in comparison with the quantitation of a chlamydial DNA target in subjects exposed to trachoma. METHODS: Subjects from 2 Gambian villages where trachoma was endemic were examined. Conjunctival samples were tested for the presence of C. trachomatis DNA using a quantitative real-

Erosive Tarsal Conjunctival Lesions Following Immunogenic Events in Early Development of Ocular Graft-vs-Host Disease.

PURPOSE: Ocular graft-versus-host disease (oGVHD) affects more than half of the patients following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The disease onset and the pathogenesis of oGVHD are not well understood. We hope to identify the triggers and explore the clinical signs and symptoms of oGVHD development at the early stages. METHODS: The records of post-HSCT patients seen consecutively in a 1-year span in a single provider's clinic were reviewed. The history, symptoms, and clinical findings of the patients with erosive tarsal conjunctival lesions (ETCLs) were analyzed.
