In this review, a summary is presented of the main reports regarding the potential ocular manifestations of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Scientific evidence is based on letters to the editor, clinical cases and case series, cross-sectional, and a few longitudinal studies. To date, it includes viral conjunctivitis, immune conjunctivitis, and oculomotor palsies (OCP) due to the novel coronavirus. Retinopathy is discussed. A viral conjunctivitis outbreak can be isolated or associated with the systemic picture, mainly pulmonary, before or after the onset of respiratory symptoms. It can

Red eye is the cardinal sign of ocular inflammation. The condition is usually benign and can be managed by primary care physicians. Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye. Other common causes include blepharitis, corneal abrasion, foreign body, subconjunctival hemorrhage, keratitis, iritis, glaucoma, chemical burn, and scleritis. Signs and symptoms of red eye include eye discharge, redness, pain, photophobia, itching, and visual changes. Generally, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are self-limiting conditions, and serious complications are rare. Because there is no specific diagn

BACKGROUND: Since the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019, many studies have reported the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the conjunctival sac of patients infected with this virus, with several patients displaying symptoms of viral conjunctivitis. However, to our best knowledge, there is no in-depth report on the course of patients with COVID-19 complicated by relapsing viral conjunctivitis or keratoconjunctivitis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man confirmed with COVID-19 developed symptoms of viral conjunctivitis in

Hospital employees with suspected adenoviral conjunctivitis underwent evaluation and testing with real-time polymerase chain reaction. Viral conjunctivitis was suspected in 307 (59%) of 518 employees with eye complaints; adenovirus was detected in 4% (22 of 518). Four employees had genotypes consistent with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. This algorithm minimizes productivity loss compared with clinical diagnosis.

PURPOSE: Viral conjunctivitis is a highly contagious infection often causing major epidemics. A safe broad-spectrum antiviral agent is needed to treat this unmet medical need. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate that in vitro NVC-422 is a safe, broad-spectrum topical virucidal agent with activity against ophthalmic viral pathogens.
METHODS: The virucidal activity of NVC-422 against several serotypes of human adenovirus (HAdV), coxsackievirus A24, enterovirus 70, and herpes simplex-virus-1 (HSV-1) was tested in standard in vitro titer reduction assays with or without tears. An in vitro

Infectious conjunctivitis is no longer a common eye disease in cities and developed areas, but in remote mountainous regions of China where living conditions are relatively under-developed, the occurrence of infectious conjunctivitis remains a public health issue. Here, we evaluate the ratio of infectious conjunctivitis among primary school students in the rural areas of Xunhua, Huangyuan, and Huzhu Counties in the Qinghai province of China, and report the microorganisms involved in causing infection. Of the 765 eligible primary school students, 694 participated to this study (a response rateo

Red eye is a common presentation in clinical practice with conjunctivitis being the most common cause of red eye. Most commonly, conjunctivitis is infective (bacterial and viral) or allergic in origin although other forms of conjunctivitis including toxic and irritative conjunctivitis and conjunctivitis related to systemic conditions or dry eye are prevalent enough to warrant consideration in diagnosis. This article aims to provide a guide for generalists and allergists in the differential diagnosis of conjunctivitis allowing the inclusion of eye treatment into their current practice. With a d

It is not uncommon for patients to present to eye casualties with a red eye and where treatment has already been started by the general practitioner, usually in the form of antibiotic drops or ointment for presumed bacterial/viral conjunctivitis. Occasionally, the diagnosis is not simply a bacterial conjunctivitis and this can only be clarified by close ocular inspection.

BACKGROUND: General practitioners (GPs) face the challenge of diagnosing conjunctivitis accurately and confidently. Conjunctivitis and red eye are common presentations that confer diagnostic uncertainty. GPs are pivotal in diagnosing and managing conjunctivitis-like symptoms, making them a critical first port of call for patients. Accurately identifying and treating this common eye infection can help ensure the best possible outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: This article presents an overview of conjunctivitis, exploring its causes and how to accurately assess and diagnose. We also discuss how to safely re

Corneal subepithelial infiltrates are a known complication of adenoviral conjunctivitis. In this article, we present a case of a 32-year-old man who developed these classic infiltrates after a well-documented adenoviral conjunctivitis. What is unique about this case is that the infiltrates recurred 8 months later after an upper respiratory infection without any clinical or laboratory evidence of a viral conjunctivitis. The possible confounding variable of corticosteroid withdrawal being responsible for the recurrence is highly unlikely because he had not used topical corticosteroids for almost

Twenty-five consecutive cases of adult inclusion conjunctivitis were studied. Diagnosis was based on the finding of typical Halberstaedter-Prowazek inclusion bodies on conjunctival scrapings. Corneal involvement was common (20/25 patients); most frequent was superficial epithelial keratitis (15/25). Other changes seen included subepithelial nummular keratitis (6/25), marginal keratitis (2/25), (4/25). There seemed to be a predilection for involvement of the upper half of the cornea. Conjunctival scarring occurred in one patient only. Associated genitourinary symptoms were spontaneously reporte

There is an annual epidemic of viral conjunctivitis at the onset of the monsoon (rainy) season in North India. This affects a large population, with many patients developing ocular symptoms and then getting better without any treatment as there is no specific therapy for adenoviral infections. However, this creates a dangerous situation for patients with operated trabeculectomy with a filtering bleb as conjunctivitis can lead to blebitis and bleb-related endophthalmitis with super-added bacterial/fungal infections. While the viral infection is self-limiting and most patients get well without t

BACKGROUND: Patients with red eyes frequently present to general practitioners (GPs). Although infrequent, some patients with COVID-19 may present with features typical of viral conjunctivitis. SARS-CoV-2 is expressed at a low rate in tears, which may be a source of infection to GPs caring for patients at high risk of COVID‑19.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this article are to outline: 1) ophthalmic complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection, 2) triage and management of patients with potential COVID-19 conjunctivitis, and 3) triage and management of patients with red eyes during the current COVID-19 pand

Strains of adenovirus type 4 (Ad4) isolated from patients with acute conjunctivitis were studied by DNA restriction analysis. The strains were isolated between July and December 1990 in Japan. All 63 isolates of Ad4 were identified as the genome type Ad4a. This study showed that the same Ad4 genome type, Ad4a, caused acute viral conjunctivitis, even in different areas of Japan.
