Movement related cortical potentials of cued versus self-initiated movements: double dissociated modulation by dorsal premotor cortex versus supplementary motor area rTMS.

The dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) is thought to play a significant role in movement preparation cued by sensory information rather than in self-initiated movements. The evidence in humans for this contention is still circumstantial. Here we explored the effects of modulation of PMd by excitability decreasing 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) versus excitability increasing 5 Hz rTMS on two forms of movement related cortical potentials: contingent negative variation (CNV) versus Bereitschaftspotential (BP) reflecting externally cued versus self-triggered movement preparatio

ERN varies with degree of psychopathy in an emotion discrimination task.

It is hypothesized that anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) function may be disrupted in psychopathy. Since ACC is considered the generator of the error-related negativity (ERN), we expected the ERN to be sensitive to the degree of psychopathy among violent offenders. EEG was collected while offenders and controls responded to a standard letter flanker task and to a face flanker task that required discrimination between angry and fearful expressions. Offenders were as accurate as controls on the letter flanker task but made more errors in emotion discrimination on the face flanker task. ERNs elici

MEG and TMS combined with EEG for mapping alcohol effects.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive method of studying magnetic fields from outside the skull that are generated by at least partially synchronized neuronal populations in the brain. The advantage of MEG over electroencephalography (EEG) is the transparency of the skull, scalp, and brain tissue to the magnetic fields, which facilitates easy localization of the cortical activity. In MEG, alcohol increased the relative power of the alpha rhythm and reduced the relative power of beta activity in parieto-occipital regions. In contrast, no changes were observed in EEG, indicating that the

Psychoacoustics and Neurophysiological Alterations after 30-36 Hours of Sleep Deprivation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Sleep deprivation (SD) may result in perceptual and cognitive alterations in healthy subjects. Our objective was to compare whether psychoacoustics and neurophysiological variables in healthy subjects were altered after SD of 30-36 h. METHOD: We examined 22 subjects by means of several psychoacoustics tests, P300 and mismatch negativity (MMN) recordings, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) before and after 30-36 h of SD. RESULTS: In the psychoacoustics tests, we found that after SD, difficulties were experienced by the left ear in the discrimination of words i

Effects of NMDA receptor antagonist memantine on mismatch negativity.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) and its magnetic counterpart (MMNm) have been shown to be altered in patients with various psychiatric and neurological disorders, e.g. Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, indicating deficits in involuntary attention. N-Methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated glutamate dysfunction is suggested to underlie these deficits. However, the role of NMDA receptors in involuntary attention is poorly understood. Memantine is an NMDA receptor antagonist that has been demonstrated to be effective in the treatment of patients with Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to investigat

Dissociations between motor-related EEG measures in a cued movement sequence task.

Different aspects of preparation, especially processes related to knowing what to prepare versus applying that foreknowledge effectively, may be reflected in different types of brain activity, e.g., the lateralized readiness potential (LRP), beta-band event-related desynchronization and phase locking. In a previous study in which subjects had to switch between response hands, dissociations were found between types of preparatory hand-related lateralization in evoked potentials, amplitude and phase locking (Gladwin et al., 2006) knowing what task set to switch to and effectively preparing that

Cortical distribution of Bereitschaftspotential and negative slope potential preceding mouth-opening movements in humans.

Cortical potentials associated with the voluntary movement of various body parts are known as movement-related cortical potentials, which allow evaluation of the cortical efferent function and other higher functions controlling voluntary movement. The cortical potentials have three main components: the Bereitschaftspotential (or 'readiness potential'), the negative slope and the motor potential. Here, the cortical potentials preceding mouth-opening movements were recorded to investigate which of these components could be observed. Electroencephalograms (EEGs) were recorded from 11 electrodes p

Chronic tension-type headache: amitriptyline reduces clinical headache-duration and experimental pain sensitivity but does not alter pericranial muscle activity readings.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the effect of 75 mg of a slow-release formulation of amitriptyline on the clinical severity of chronic tension-type headache and on headache-associated neurophysiological parameters (EMG activity, exteroceptive suppression of temporal muscle activity, contingent negative variation (CNV) and experimental pain sensitivity) was investigated. All of the patients treated had a history of headaches of many years' standing and many of them had failed attempts at treatment. In the amitriptyline group, a significant reduction in daily headache duration was a

CNV-like potentials on the cortical surface associated with conditioning in head-restrained rats.

Head-restrained rats were conditioned to perform a CNV task: to press a lever in response to an imperative auditory stimulus (S2) given 1.5 sec after a warning stimulus (S1) for a drop of jelly food. With an electrode on the surface of the forelimb cortex, (1) sharp wave complexes immediately after S1 and S2, and (2) a negative slow potential (SP) between S1 and S2, on which early and late components were discernible, were recorded in association with performance of this task. With the electrode at a depth of 2 mm in the same cortical area, the corresponding field potential showed a long-lasti

Stimulus context and motor preparation in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

AIM: To investigate (1) whether and how local stimulus context variation may modify behavioural and preparatory motor processes in children, and (2) if these effects differ between healthy children and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) aged 9-12 years. METHODS: Behavioural parameters and contingent negative variation (CNV) at cortical motor electrodes were recorded during a cued continuous performance task (AX-CPT) in three stimulus context conditions (Go, NoGo, neutral). Stimulus context was varied on the basis of stimulus types preceding the cue letter A. RESULT

Hidden wounds of violence: Abnormal motor oscillatory brain activity is related to posttraumatic stress symptoms.

Victims of urban violence are at risk of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), one of the most debilitating consequences of violence. Considering that PTSD may be associated with inefficient selection of defensive responses, it is important to understand the relation between motor processing and PTSD. The present study aims to investigate the extent to which the severity of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) is related to motor preparation against visual threat cues in victims of urban violence. Participants performed a choice reaction time task while ignoring a picture that could

Premonitory sensory phenomenon in Tourette's syndrome.

We administered a questionnaire designed to probe for premonitory sensations associated with motor tics to 50 patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS). Premonitory sensations were reported by 46 (92%) patients, and the most common sensation was an urge to move and an impulse to tic ("had to do it"). Intensification of premonitory sensations, if prevented from performing a motor tic, was reported also in 37 patients (74%), 36 patients (72%) reported relief of premonitory sensations after performing the tic, and 27 of 40 (68%) described a motor tic as a voluntary motor response to an involuntary s

Asymmetrical effects of frequent gains and frequent losses in a gambling task.

Feedback negativity (FN) is elicited when the outcome is worse than expected. Here we report that changes in outcome probabilities affect the reward prediction level reflected in the FN. We used a slot machine-like gambling task in which a button press produced one of the six outcomes: -10, -5, -1, +1, +5, and +10. The outcomes were first presented with equal probability, and subsequently, either +10 or -10 was presented more frequently. The smaller gains elicited an FN when the largest gain occurred frequently, whereas the smaller losses continued eliciting an FN even when the largest loss oc

Task-related dissociation in ERN amplitude as a function of obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Hyperactive cortico-striatal circuits including the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have been implicated to underlie obtrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Larger error-related negativities (ERNs) in OCD patients during simple flanker tasks have been proposed to reflect an amplified error signal in these hyperactive circuits. Such amplified error signals typically are associated with an adaptive change in response, yet in OCD these same repetitive responses persist to the point of distress and impairment. In contrast to this repetitive character of

Action monitoring and depressive symptom reduction in major depressive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Action monitoring has been reported to be disturbed in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Well-known markers for this action monitoring process are the error negativity/error-related negativity (Ne/ERN) and error positivity (Pe), both event-related potentials (ERP) generated in the anterior cingulate cortex. This study aims to explore the impact of symptom severity reduction on the Ne/ERN and Pe in MDD. METHODS: Behavioural and ERP measurements were obtained in 15 MDD patients during performance on a speeded flankers task during the early stages of a depressive episode and compare

The interdependence of spatial attention and lexical access as revealed by early asymmetries in occipito-parietal ERP activity.

A test of the possible functional interaction between mechanisms subserving spatial attention and lexical access was devised by displaying one green and one red string of letters, one to the left and one to the right of fixation, and having participants attend to a target string defined by color while ignoring the other distractor string. The target string for a delayed lexical decision task could be a word or a nonword. The distractor was always a word. When the target was a word, target and distractor were associatively related on half of the trials and not related in the other trials. The e

Neurocognitive effects of phobia-related stimuli in animal-fearful individuals.

Two experiments were conducted to explore neurocognitive effects of phobia-related stimuli. Contingency assessments and event-related potentials (ERPs) were collected from animal-fearful individuals during probabilistic classification learning in diverse motivational-affective contexts. As revealed by ERPs, attentional amplification of cortical sensory processing occurred in response to phobia-related stimuli. In particular, the posterior selection negativity in the ERPs to phobia-related stimuli had its origin in a bottom-up route, probably the amygdaloid-extrastriate cortex path. No evidence

Reversible reorganisation of the motor cortical representation of the hand in cervical dystonia.

Previous work has suggested that there may be a widespread disturbance of motor control mechanisms in patients with cervical dystonia. In the present study, we used transcranial magnetic stimulation to investigate the topography of the corticomotor projection to the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) muscle in 10 subjects with idiopathic torticollis. Threshold-adjusted stimuli were delivered at multiple scalp sites during a low-level voluntary contraction of the APB, and maps were generated of motor evoked potential amplitude versus scalp site. The cortical maps for the APB on the side opposite to
