The purpose of this article is to describe challenges associated with successful use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) by young children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to detail the techniques and products used to improve the duration of sensor wear. The DirecNet Study Group conducted 2 studies in 169 children with T1D between the ages of 1 and 9 years who were instructed to wear a CGM device daily. Problems related to skin irritation and sensor adhesiveness in these young children presented challenges to daily use of the CGM. Study coordinators instituted a variety of techniques using co

BACKGROUND: Traditional diabetes self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) involves inconvenient finger pricks. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and intermittently scanned CGM (isCGM) systems offer CGM, enhancing type 2 diabetes (T2D) management with convenient, comprehensive data.
PURPOSE: To assess the benefits and potential harms of CGM and isCGM compared with usual care or SMBG in individuals with T2D.
DATA SOURCES: We conducted a comprehensive search of MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and bibliographies up to August 2023.
STUDY SELECTION: We analyzed studies mee

OBJECTIVE: Maintaining healthy glucose levels is critical for the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the most efficacious and cost-effective approach (capillary self-monitoring of blood glucose [SMBG] or continuous [CGM] or intermittently scanned [isCGM] glucose monitoring) is not clear. We modeled the population-level impact of these three glucose monitoring systems on diabetes-related complications, mortality, and cost-effectiveness in adults with T1D in Canada.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used a Markov cost-effectiveness model based on nine complication states for adults aged 18-

BACKGROUND: People on dialysis are at a higher risk of diabetes mellitus. The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is the gold standard for detecting dysglycaemia, but is cumbersome. This study investigates the OGTT in comparison to the glucose challenge test (GCT) and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) as a simpler screening tool for people on dialysis.
METHODS: This single-centre prospective diagnostic cohort study included adults on dialysis at the Antwerp University Hospital without a diabetes history or glucose-lowering therapy. Participants underwent a 50 g-GCT followed by a 75 g-OGTT 8-

Neonatal hypoglycemia (NH) is potentially life-threatening and can lead to long-term neurological sequelae. We retrospectively assessed the association between maternal glycemia in women with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and NH. Continuous glucose monitoring data from 60 mothers, alongside routine capillary blood glucose measurements from their neonates, were analyzed. The analyses used two clinically recognized thresholds for NH (<2.2 mmol/L and <2.6 mmol/L). In total, there were 25 neonates (41.7%) with NH <2.6 mmol/L and 19 neonates (31.7%) with NH <2.2 mmol/L. Neonates with NH <2.2 mmol/L were bo

The older population is increasing worldwide and up to 30% of older adults have diabetes. Older adults with diabetes are at risk of glucose-related acute and chronic complications. Recently, mostly in type 1 diabetes (T1D), continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have proven beneficial in improving time in range (TIR glucose, 70-180 mg/dL or glucose 3.9-10 mmol/L), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and in lowering hypoglycemia (time below range [TBR] glucose <70 mg/dL or glucose <3.9 mmol/L). The international consensus group formulated CGM glycemic targets relating to older adults with diabete

Emerging research has demonstrated the advantage of continuous glucose monitoring for use in artificial pancreas and diabetes management in general. Recent studies demonstrate that glucose level forecasting using deep learning can help avoid postprandial hyperglycemia (≥ 180 mg/dL) or hypoglycemia (≤70 mg/dL) from delayed or increased insulin dosing in artificial pancreas. In this paper, a novel hybrid deep learning framework with integration of content-based attention learning is presented, to effectively predict the glucose measurements with prediction horizons (PH) = 15, 30 and, 60 minutes

BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitoring has facilitated the evaluation of dynamic changes in glucose throughout the day and their effect on fetal growth abnormalities in pregnancy. However, studies of multiple continuous glucose monitoring metrics combined and their association with other adverse pregnancy outcomes are limited.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) use machine learning techniques to identify discrete glucose profiles based on weekly continuous glucose monitoring metrics in pregnant individuals with pregestational diabetes mellitus and (2) investigate their association with adv

Diabetes mellitus (DM) management has advanced from self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) to continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), which better prevents complications. However, the influence of periodontitis-a common DM complication-on glucose variability is unclear. This study examined glucose variability in mice with periodontitis using CGM. Periodontitis was induced in 9-week-old male C57BL/6J mice via silk ligatures around the upper second molars. Glucose levels were monitored over 14 days with CGM, validated by SMBG. On day 14, samples were collected to assess alveolar bone resorption and s

Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) can improve long-term patient survival and restore endogenous insulin secretion in recipients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). There are currently few data on glucose fluctuations assessed by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) after SPKT. Aim: to evaluate CGM-derived time in range (TIR) and glucose variability (GV) in patients with T1D and functioning pancreatic grafts after SPKT. Fifty-four CGM recordings from 43 patients, 15 men and 28 women, aged 34 (31; 39) years were analyzed. Time since SKPT was up to 1 year (group 1, n = 13), from 1 to 5 y

BACKGROUND: In the United States, approximately 1% of pregnancies are complicated by pregestational diabetes. Individuals with type 1 diabetes have an increased risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. While continuous glucose monitoring has demonstrated benefits for patients with type 1 diabetes, its cost is higher than traditional intermittent fingerstick monitoring, particularly if used only during pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: To develop an economic analysis model to compare in silico the cost of continuous glucose monitoring and self-monitoring of blood glucose in a cohort of pregnant ind

IMPORTANCE: Most diabetes care is managed in primary care settings, which represent a critical yet underutilized site for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) adoption. Whether CGM initiation by primary care clinicians improves glycemic outcomes and reduces acute health care utilization remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of primary care-initiated CGM with changes in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels and rates of hospitalizations and emergency department (ED) visits among adults with insulin-treated diabetes.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was perfor

OBJECTIVE: Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) use among patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been associated with improved glycemic control, though improvement in non-glycemic outcomes is less consistent. We hypothesize that CGM use in patients with T1DM in a real-world clinical setting is associated with both improved glycemic and clinical outcomes.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of patients with T1DM receiving care at a large health system from 2016 to 2023. Primary outcomes included (1) glycemic control and (2) a composite comprising severe maternal morbi

Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has transformed diabetes management by providing continuous, real-time insights into glucose dynamics, while enhancing the lived experience of individuals with type 1 diabetes. In established type 1 diabetes, CGM-derived measures of glucose management, such as time in range, time above range, time below range and glycaemic variability, have become integral tools to optimise therapy, reduce episodes of hypoglycaemia and guide clinical decision-making. More recently, CGM has emerged as a promising tool to detect early hyperglycaemia and other glucose abnormali
