Contraceptive and condom use adoption and maintenance: a stage paradigm approach.

The Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change was examined for its applicability to contraceptive and condom use adoption and maintenance using N = 248 heterosexually active college-age men and women. The model posits that individuals do not go directly from old behaviors to new behaviors to new behaviors, but progress through a sequence of stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. The stages of change offer a temporal dimension that provides information regarding when a particular shift in attitudes, intentions, and behavior may occur. The model also postu

"Wish I Would Have Known that before I Started Using It": Contraceptive Messages and Information Seeking among Young Women.

In recent decades, women's use of contraception has evolved. Women not only utilize contraceptives to prevent pregnancy, but also to manage menstruation and other factors related to their personal agency. Despite an abundance of available contraceptive options, many women struggle to navigate and address their contraceptive needs. A hundred and thirty-four female participants responded to an open-ended questionnaire about contraceptive messages and decision making in an online survey. Using Uncertainty Management Theory as a framework, we illustrate how the women make sense of and manage uncer

Association between symptoms of depression and contraceptive method choices among low-income women at urban reproductive health centers.

Among adult women of reproductive age, research has focused on depression symptoms after unintended pregnancy, or associated with hormonal contraceptive method use, with little focus on depression as a predictor of unintended pregnancy. This study was conducted to identify mental and behavioral health characteristics associated with use of less effective contraceptive methods. Choosing a less effective method of contraception places sexually active women who are not seeking pregnancy at increased risk of unintended pregnancy. Analysis was conducted using administrative data from family plannin

Effect of theory-based contraception comics on subjective contraceptive knowledge: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the effect on subjective knowledge of a pilot educational comic decision aid about contraceptive methods. STUDY DESIGN: We designed four comics (www.birthcontroltales.com), each about a different contraceptive method choice. The comics employ a theoretical framework, and the methods addressed were injection, intrauterine device, implant and combined hormonal contraceptives (including pill, patch and ring). The study population included young women presenting to a college student health clinic whose preferred language is English. Participants had not used the contracept

Sex Without Contraceptives in a Multicenter Study of Adolescent Emergency Department Patients.

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain exceptionally high, and racial and ethnic disparities persist. Emergency departments (EDs) care for over 19 million adolescents each year, the majority being minority and low socioeconomic status. Single-center studies demonstrate infrequent use of contraceptives among adolescent ED patients and an association between risky sex and behaviors such as alcohol and drug use; however, no multicenter ED data exist. The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the prevalence of sex with

Catching up on contraception.

BACKGROUND: Providing contraceptive advice is a core activity in general practice. There have been numerous changes to the contraceptive options available in Australia over the past 10 years. It is important that general practitioners are aware of these changes so that they can advise patients appropriately. OBJECTIVE: This article examines the changes that have occurred in contraception over the past decade and discusses the implications of these changes to clinical practice. DISCUSSION: Up-to-date knowledge about how the combined oral contraceptive pill works is reflected in changes to pac

Validation of measures of condom and other contraceptive use among women at high risk for HIV infection and unintended pregnancy.

This study assessed the applicability of the transtheoretical model of behavior change (J.O. Prochaska & C.C. DiClemente, 1983, 1984) to the measurement of contraceptive use among 296 women at high risk for HIV infection and transmission. Structural equation modeling suggested that a measure of general contraceptive use could be used to assess use of oral contraceptives and hormonal implants but that measurement of condom use required separate assessments for main and other partners. Self-efficacy (SE) and decisional balance scales were internally consistent for general contraceptive use, for

Sexual Activity and Weekly Contraceptive Discontinuation and Selection Among Young Adult Women in Michigan.

Understanding young women's contraceptive and pregnancy prevention behaviors is important for helping women and their partners control if and when they have children. Prior research on associations between patterns of sexual activity and contraceptive behaviors is limited. We assessed the influence of recent sexual activity on discontinuation and selection of specific contraceptive methods. We used weekly data from the Relationship Dynamics and Social Life (RDSL) study, a longitudinal 2.5-year population-based project that sampled woman ages 18 and 19 (N = 1,003) in one Michigan county. We est

Is LARC for Everyone? A Qualitative Study of Sociocultural Perceptions of Family Planning and Contraception Among Refugees in Ethiopia.

Objective Ethiopia is home to an increasingly large refugee population. Reproductive health care is a critical issue for these groups because refugee women are at high risk for unmet family planning needs. Efforts to expand contraceptive use, particularly long acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods are currently underway in several Ethiopian refugee camps. Despite availability of LARC methods, few refugee women opt to use them. The purpose of this study was to explore how culture influences contraceptive attitudes and behaviors, particularly towards LARC methods, among Ethiopia's refug

Self-described impact of noncompliance among users of a combined hormonal contraceptive method.

BACKGROUND: A number of factors related to the user and the method affect contraceptive compliance. STUDY DESIGN: This cross-sectional multicenter study was designed to assess self-described impact of noncompliant behavior among 26,250 typical users of a combined hormonal contraceptive method who consulted their physicians for control visits. A self-administered questionnaire was completed. RESULTS: Sixty-five percent of women used the pill, 23% the vaginal ring and 12% the transdermal patch. Reduced threat avoidance but increased stress induced approach bias in women taking oral contraceptives.

Recent research has increasingly acknowledged the impact of oral contraceptives on affective behavior and stress responses; however, the underlying mechanisms are still not well understood. Studies have previously shown that steroid hormones modulate automatic approach and avoidance behavior. Here, we thus investigated the effects of oral contraceptives on approach and avoidance behavior and whether these effects are modulated by stress. The study comprised 130 female participants, half of whom were using oral contraceptives, while the other half were not using any hormonal contraception (NC).

Factors associated with lack of effective contraception among obese women in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with contraceptive nonuse and use of less effective methods among obese women in the US. STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed data from sexually active obese women (body mass index >30 kg/m²) age 20-44 using the 2006-2010 National Survey of Family Growth. We conducted multinomial logistic regression to assess associations between current contraceptive use and demographic, reproductive and health services factors. Specifically, we compared contraceptive nonusers, behavioral method users (withdrawal and fertility awareness) and barrier method users (condoms) to pr

Objective Measurement of Inaccurate Condom Use Reporting Among Women Using Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate for Contraception.

Observational analyses have suggested that women using the injectable contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) may have heightened risk of acquiring HIV. However, those analyses were potentially confounded by sexual behavior, with possible differential condom use and reporting by women using DMPA versus no contraception. In a cross-sectional study, we measured the presence of a biomarker of recent condomless sex (Y chromosomal [Yc] DNA) in vaginal swabs from HIV-uninfected African women who had an HIV-infected partner and reported 100 % condom use. Half of the samples tested were

A multivariate decomposition analysis of modern contraceptive utilization among married women in the emerging region of Ethiopia (2000-2019).

Ensuring universal access to family planning services is a proven strategy to improve reproductive health as well as economic development. Assessing the trend and identifying the factors for the change in modern contraceptive utilization is crucial to design effective measures, but trend analysis was not conducted previously. Thus, this study aimed to assess the trend and determinants of modern contraceptive utilization change among married women in emerging regions of Ethiopia. This study used the 2000 Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey and the 2019 Ethiopia Min Demographic and Health Sur

A Panel Study of Fertility Preferences and Contraceptive Dynamics in the Presence of Competing Pregnancy Risks in Uganda.

Although many studies have examined the influence of women's fertility preferences on subsequent fertility behavior and the role of contraceptive use intentions on unmet need, very few have explored their concurrent effects on contraceptive use dynamics. This study examines the independent concurrent effects of women's fertility preferences and contraceptive intentions on subsequent adoption and discontinuation, treating pregnancy as a competing risk factor that may alter contraceptive need. The data are derived from a 2018 follow-up survey of a 2014 national sample of 3,800 Ugandan female res
