A Narrative Review of the W, X, Y, E, and NG of Meningococcal Disease: Emerging Capsular Groups, Pathotypes, and Global Control.

Neisseria meningitidis, carried in the human nasopharynx asymptomatically by ~10% of the population, remains a leading cause of meningitis and rapidly fatal sepsis, usually in otherwise healthy individuals. The epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) varies substantially by geography and over time and is now influenced by meningococcal vaccines and in 2020-2021 by COVID-19 pandemic containment measures. While 12 capsular groups, defined by capsular polysaccharide structures, can be expressed by N. meningitidis, groups A, B, and C historically caused most IMD. However, the use of m

Incidence of Brain Vascular Damage in a Population With Parkinson's Disease: Statistical Comparison by Age Subassemblies With Age Homogeneous Control Groups.

We recently published studies on the incidence significance of cerebrovascular disease (CVD) in Parkinson's disease (PD) and some related movement disorders. The CVD was assessed by including lesions morphologically diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scan studies that defined ischemic vascular damage with a range from leukoaraiosis to multiple microinfarcts with various distribution, minor stroke, and major stroke and hemorrhagic lesions. These lesions were detected at the beginning of Parkinsonian symptoms or earlier; in any case, all the patients were d

Control of carboxylic acid and ester groups on chromium (VI) binding to functionalized silica/water interfaces studied by second harmonic generation.

Resonantly enhanced surface second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements carried out at pH 7 and room temperature were performed to study how surface-bound carboxylic acid and methyl ester functional groups control the interaction of chromate ions with fused silica/water interfaces. These functional groups were chosen because of their high abundance in humic and fulvic acids and related biopolymers commonly found in soils. They were anchored to the silica surface using organosilane chemistry to avoid competing complexation processes in the aqueous solution as well as competitive adsorption of

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: isolation of Moraxella bovis from two groups of young beef cattle in fly control field trials during 1981.

The rate of infection with Moraxella bovis was determined for two herds of calves during the course of a year. High infection rates with the haemolytic variant were found in the herds while they were housed during their first winter but this infection rate fell steadily after turnout. A rise in infections with the non-haemolytic variant was observed during this time. The animals remained free from clinical infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis during the summer, unlike similar groups of animals in previous years. Immunity, weather and flies are considered for their possible relevance to this

Inflammatory and clinical risk factors for asthma attacks (ORACLE2): a patient-level meta-analysis of control groups of 22 randomised trials.

BACKGROUND: Clinical risk factors for severe asthma attacks have been identified, but their incremental prognostic values are unclear. Additionally, the incremental contribution of type 2 inflammation, a common, treatable process, is undetermined. We aimed to quantify the prognostic value of baseline characteristics and type 2 inflammatory biomarkers, specifically blood eosinophil count and fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), to predict asthma attacks. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs), Oxford Asthma Attack Risk Scale 2 (ORACLE2),

Comprehensive Assessment of Albumin and Uric Acid Levels in Oral Submucous Fibrosis: A Comparative Case-Control Study Involving Different Risk Groups.

Background Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant disorder that impacts the oral cavity and pharynx. Major risk factors for OSMF are attributed to the consumption of betel nuts or tobacco. These substances harbor various carcinogens that trigger the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Antioxidants are pivotal in preserving cellular integrity and impeding the oncogenic transformation of body cells. In this context, albumin and uric acid, being primary antioxidants present in body fluids, bestow a defensive effect against this condition. Thus, the present study is

The Effects of Waiting for Treatment: A Meta-Analysis of Waitlist Control Groups in Randomized Controlled Trials for Social Anxiety Disorder.

UNLABELLED: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a highly prevalent mental disorder. However, little is known about how SAD changes in subjects who do not receive treatment. Waitlist control groups (WLCGs) are frequently included in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the treatment of mental disorders. Data from WLCGs are of value as they provide information on the untreated short-term course of a disorder and may serve as disorder-specific norms of change (benchmarks) against which treatment outcomes of SAD can be compared. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis focusing on the effects occurring i

Comparison of Lp(a) concentrations and some potential effects in hemodialysis, CAPD, transplantation, and control groups, and review of the literature.

Apolipoprotein (a)-Lp(a)-is reported to be an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease and for hemodialysis (HD) access occlusion. Homology with plasminogen may predispose to thrombosis. High concentrations usually have been reported in patients on HD and on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), but near-normal values in many kidney transplants (TP). We used Pharmacia immunoradiometric assay in 52 patients on HD, 58 on CAPD, 94 after TP, and 56 controls. The Lp(a) mean levels for CAPD, HD, TP, and control groups were 738, 647, 348, and 368 U/l and the medians were 542, 5

Comparison of eating disorders and other dietary/weight groups on measures of perceived control, assertiveness, self-esteem, and self-directed hostility.

Anorexic and bulimic patients were compared to obese dieters, nonobese dieters, and normal controls on measures of perceived control, assertiveness, self-esteem, self-directed hostility, and psychiatric caseness. The anorexic and bulimic groups both scored significantly differently in the expected direction from the other three groups on all measures. There were no significant differences between the anorexic and bulimic groups and in turn, no significant differences among the obese, nonobese dieters, and normal controls. Results are in keeping with the notion that perceived control, low asser

Control of epidemic meningococcal meningitis by mass vaccination. I. Further epidemiological evaluation of groups A and C vaccines in northern Nigeria.

Mass vaccination campaigns were mounted by several state governments in the northern Nigerian sector of the African meningitis belt. Bivalent groups A and C polysaccharide vaccines were used. The results of these campaigns in four of the states which are adjacent to each other are presented and assessed. A total of 7535350 persons in the four States, Bauchi, Borno, Gongola and Plateau, were given the vaccine over a period of 4 years (1978-1981). There was a decline in the overall number of cases reported as well as in the number of deaths in the area, where, since 1978, there has not been an e

Group and online application of the Unified Protocol in Argentina: controlled pilot study.

Emotional disorders (ED), including anxiety and depression, are highly prevalent in Argentina and share dysfunctional emotional regulation mechanisms. The Unified Protocol (UP) is a transdiagnostic intervention designed to address these common processes. This is the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate its effectiveness on a group and online format in the Argentinian population. A parallel-group RCT was conducted with 39 participants (mean age = 33.54; 67% women) diagnosed with various EDs according to DSM-5 criteria. Subjects were randomly assigned to a treatment group (n = 22)

Health consequences of paternal incarceration using a future-treated control group.

BACKGROUND: Paternal incarceration is a now a common experience in the life course for young people in the United States that likely shapes health. This study examines the effect of paternal incarceration on adolescents’ health care access/utilization and health behaviors during adolescence. This study employs an innovative approach, which we refer to as the future treated control method, to adjust for unobserved heterogeneity by exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in the timing of paternal incarceration to develop a future treated control group. In this approach youth who have experience

Firefighters as a Key Alliance Group to Advocate for Tobacco Control Policies in Korea.

Tobacco control is a public health priority. However, Korea has recently experienced a reversal in its long-term decline in smoking prevalence. To address this trend, it is essential to broaden advocacy networks by engaging new stakeholders. We propose that firefighters represent a strategic yet under-represented partner in tobacco control because their professional interests closely align with tobacco-related policy goals. First, cigarette butts have consistently been the leading cause of fire incidents, and tobacco use directly undermines firefighters' core mission to protect life and public

MAFLD as a Cardiovascular Risk Factor: An Extended Retrospective Study with a Control Group.

Background/Objectives: Fatty liver disease (FLD) is currently the most common liver disorder, affecting 25-30% of the global population. Its occurrence is strongly associated with overweight, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. In 2020, the disease definition was revised from NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) to MAFLD (metabolic-associated fatty liver disease), emphasizing its link to metabolic dysfunction and marking a major shift in clinical evaluation and risk stratification. We assessed the association between MAFLD and cardiovascular risk factors in a geriatric population by comparing p
