Chemical Reaction and Internal Heating Effects on the Double Diffusive Convection in Porous Membrane Enclosures Soaked with Maxwell Fluid.

In this paper, the joint impact of the interior heating and chemical reaction on the double diffusive convective flow in porous membrane enclosures soaked by a non-Newtonian Maxwell fluid is investigated applying linear and nonlinear stability techniques. The porous enclosures are square, slender and rectangular. Using the linear stability analysis, the expression for the critical thermal Rayleigh-Darcy number, above which the convective movement occurs, is derived analytically in terms of associated physical parameters. A nonlinear stability examination reliant on the Fourier double series is

Time-Resolved MRI Assessment of Convection-Enhanced Delivery by Targeted and Nontargeted Nanoparticles in a Human Glioblastoma Mouse Model.

Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) provides direct access of infusates to brain tumors; however, clinical translation of this technology has not been realized because of the inability to accurately visualize infusates in real-time and lack of targeting modalities against diffuse cancer cells. In this study, we use time-resolved MRI to reveal the kinetics of CED processes in a glioblastoma (GBM) model using iron oxide nanoparticles (NP) modified with a glioma-targeting ligand, chlorotoxin (CTX). Mice bearing orthotopic human GBM tumors were administered a single dose of targeted CTX-conjugated

Convection-Diffusion Layer in an "Open Space" for Local Surface Treatment and Microfabrication using a Four-Aperture Microchemical Pen.

A four-aperture microchemical pen was used to produce a stable convection-diffusion layer in an "open space" for microreactions and microfabrication. The process represents a new method for microreactions and microfabrication in a convection-diffusion layer. To prove the concept of a convection-diffusion layer in an "open space", bovine serum albumin was labeled with 4-fluoro-7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole to confirm that the small convection-diffusion layer was effective for local surface treatment. To demonstrate the potential for microfabrication, silver patterns were fabricated on a glass su

Speed selection for traveling-wave solutions to the diffusion-reaction equation with cubic reaction term and Burgers nonlinear convection.

The problem of traveling wave (TW) speed selection for solutions to a generalized Murray-Burgers-KPP-Fisher parabolic equation with a strictly positive cubic reaction term is considered theoretically and the initial boundary value problem is numerically solved in order to support obtained analytical results. Depending on the magnitude of a parameter inherent in the reaction term (i) the term is either a concave function or a function with the inflection point and (ii) transition from pulled to pushed TW solution occurs due to interplay of two nonlinear terms; the reaction term and the Burgers

Rayleigh-Bénard percolation transition of thermal convection in porous media: computational fluid dynamics, NMR velocity mapping, NMR temperature mapping.

Stationary thermal convection and heat conduction were studied in random-site percolation clusters in a Rayleigh-Bénard configuration experimentally by NMR microscopy techniques and numerically with the aid of a finite volume method. The porosity of the percolation clusters, and the temperature difference applied to the convection cell were varied. Two-dimensional percolation networks were generated with the aid of a random-number algorithm. The resulting clusters were used as templates for the fabrication of model objects. The convective velocity distribution of silicon oil or ethylene glycol

Convection-enhanced intraparenchymal delivery (CEID) of cytosine arabinoside (AraC) for the treatment of HIV-related progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).

AIDS-related PML continues to be a relatively common and rapidly fatal infection in patients with AIDS, and no effective therapy has been established to alleviate the effects of this disease. Through the years, isolated reports and small case studies have shown somewhat encouraging results using cytosine arabinoside (AraC) in the treatment of PML. The optimism behind the use AraC for this disease began to fade with ACTG trial 243, which suggested that AraC had no benefit in patients with HIV-related PML. In this article, we provide evidence that suggests that the failure of AraC in the ACTG tr

Optimization of the Convective Dose in On-Line Hemodiafiltration: Prospective Interventional Cohort Study-Conducted at Soissons Hospital, France.

Background and Objectives: On-line hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) has been proposed as an alternative to conventional hemodialysis (HD) for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). Randomized controlled trials suggest that OL-HDF may reduce mortality, particularly when the convection volume (CV) exceeds 23 L/1.73 m2 per session. However, achieving this target depends on local practices and may be limited to selected populations. The CONVINCE trial reported a 97% success rate using a structured optimization protocol, but its applicability to unselected real-world populations remains un

Characteristics of Oils Extracted from Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) Dried with the Infrared-Convective Method.

Edible insects are a nutritionally attractive food product, also due to their high fat content and high levels of unsaturated fatty acids. In this work, the effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) pretreatment and infrared-convective (IR-CD) drying on the oil properties extracted from yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.) larvae was investigated. The oil from raw and dried insects was extracted via the Soxhlet method for yield determination and via the Folch method for quality analysis. The acid value (AV) and peroxide value (PV) via the titration method, fatty acid composition and its distribut

Numerical study of a convective cooling strategy for increasing safe power levels in two-photon brain imaging.

Two-photon excitation fluorescence microscopy has become an effective tool for tracking neural activity in the brain at high resolutions thanks to its intrinsic optical sectioning and deep penetration capabilities. However, advanced two-photon microscopy modalities enabling high-speed and/or deep-tissue imaging necessitate high average laser powers, thus increasing the susceptibility of tissue heating due to out-of-focus absorption. Despite cooling the cranial window by maintaining the objective at a fixed temperature, average laser powers exceeding 100-200 mW have been shown to exhibit the po

Numerical simulation of heat transfer through radiative hybrid nanofluid flow subject to thermal convection past a porous stretching surface.

In this study, a rigorous numerical simulation of the hybrid nanofluid (AA7072-AA7075/methanol) flow over a rotating porous stretching surface is presented. Such a configuration has great importance for aerospace thermal management and high-performance engines' cooling. The main aim is to study the synergistic effect of Soret, Dufour effects, thermal radiation, and exponential heat sources on the efficiency of the fluid flow. For centrifugal pumping systems and heat exchangers that have rotational stresses and multi-physical constraints, such a modeling framework is necessary to optimize the s

Convection-based vs conduction-based cooling in rehabilitation: A cadaveric porcine study of surface and intra-articular temperature reduction.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative inflammation after joint injury or surgery contributes to pain, edema, and delayed functional recovery. Cryotherapy is commonly used to alleviate pain and modulate inflammatory responses; however, the effectiveness of various cooling modalities in reducing temperatures in deeper periarticular and intra-articular tissues remains uncertain. AIM: To compare the cooling performance of a convection-based cryotherapy system with two circulating-pad cooling systems in reducing temperature at various tissue depths. METHODS: A cadaveric porcine knee model was used to assess

Results of a Pilot Trial of Infusion Rate Escalation During Convection-Enhanced Delivery of Topotecan with a Multiport Catheter.

BACKGROUND: Volume of distribution (Vd) during convection-enhanced delivery is impacted by the physical characteristics of the tissue being treated. For glioblastoma, Vd is substantially higher in noncontrast-enhancing tumor than in contrast-enhancing tumor due to higher infusate efflux in enhancing tumor. We hypothesized that increasing the infusion rate could overcome the infusate efflux rate in enhancing tumor to improve the Vd to volume of infusion ratio and provide better tumor coverage. METHODS: A single-center, institutional review board-approved pilot study was conducted to perform ra

Efficacy of slow daily home hemodialysis with internal convection on removal of uremic toxins using the Physidia S3 monitor.

Home hemodialysis, despite its recognized clinical benefits such as improved cardiac health and enhanced quality of life, remains underutilized worldwide. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of home hemodialysis within slow daily dialysis programs, employing the Physidia S3 monitor. A prospective trial was conducted with 16 stable patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease and undergoing home hemodialysis. The study assessed the efficiency of slow daily short treatment dialysis using diverse criteria, including percent reduction, effective clearances, and solute mass removal, across

Phase 1 dose-escalation trial using convection-enhanced delivery of radio-immunotheranostic 124I-Omburtamab for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma.

BACKGROUND: Median survival for patients with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is 8-12 months. METHODS: A phase 1, open label, 3 + 3 dose-escalation trial delivered radiolabeled 124I-Omburtamab, targeting B7-H3, using MR-guided stereotactic convection-enhanced delivery (CED) into the brainstem of pediatric DIPG patients. CED was performed after completion of standard-of-care external-beam radiation therapy (EBRT). Fifty children were treated and evaluable. 124I-Omburtamab activity was escalated from 0.25 to 10.0 mCi (9.25-370 MBq) and volume escalated from 0.25 mL to 10.0 mL with seria

Convection-Enhanced Delivery of Enhancer of Zeste Homolog-2 (EZH2) Inhibitor for the Treatment of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a fatal childhood brain tumor and the majority of patients die within 2 yr after initial diagnosis. Factors that contribute to the dismal prognosis of these patients include the infiltrative nature and anatomic location in an eloquent area of the brain, which precludes total surgical resection, and the presence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which reduces the distribution of systemically administered agents. Convection-enhanced delivery (CED) is a direct infusion technique to deliver therapeutic agents into a target site in the brain an

Real-Time, in Vivo Correlation of Molecular Structure with Drug Distribution in the Brain Striatum Following Convection Enhanced Delivery.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) represents a major obstacle in delivering therapeutics to brain lesions. Convection-enhanced delivery (CED), a method that bypasses the BBB through direct, cannula-mediated drug delivery, is one solution to maintaining increased, effective drug concentration at these lesions. CED was recently proven safe in a phase I clinical trial against diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a childhood cancer. Unfortunately, the exact relationship between drug size, charge, and pharmacokinetic behavior in the brain parenchyma are difficult to observe in vivo. PET imaging of
