Deep learning-based detection of lumbar spinal canal stenosis using convolutional neural networks.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) is the most common spinal degenerative disorder in elderly people and usually first seen by primary care physicians or orthopedic surgeons who are not spine surgery specialists. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful in the diagnosis of LSCS, but the equipment is often not available or difficult to read. LSCS patients with progressive neurologic deficits have difficulty with recovery if surgical treatment is delayed. So, early diagnosis and determination of appropriate surgical indications are crucial in the treatment of LSCS. Convolu

Predicting acute pancreatitis severity with enhanced computed tomography scans using convolutional neural networks.

This study aimed to evaluate acute pancreatitis (AP) severity using convolutional neural network (CNN) models with enhanced computed tomography (CT) scans. Three-dimensional DenseNet CNN models were developed and trained using the enhanced CT scans labeled with two severity assessment methods: the computed tomography severity index (CTSI) and Atlanta classification. Each labeling method was used independently for model training and validation. Model performance was evaluated using confusion matrices, areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC), accuracy, precision, recall

Environment Classification for Robotic Leg Prostheses and Exoskeletons Using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks.

Robotic leg prostheses and exoskeletons can provide powered locomotor assistance to older adults and/or persons with physical disabilities. However, the current locomotion mode recognition systems being developed for automated high-level control and decision-making rely on mechanical, inertial, and/or neuromuscular sensors, which inherently have limited prediction horizons (i.e., analogous to walking blindfolded). Inspired by the human vision-locomotor control system, we developed an environment classification system powered by computer vision and deep learning to predict the oncoming walking

Gender and age detection assist convolutional neural networks in classification of thorax diseases.

Conventionally, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been used to identify and detect thorax diseases on chest x-ray images. To identify thorax diseases, CNNs typically learn two types of information: disease-specific features and generic anatomical features. CNNs focus on disease-specific features while ignoring the rest of the anatomical features during their operation. There is no evidence that generic anatomical features improve or worsen the performance of convolutional neural networks for thorax disease classification in the current research. As a consequence, the relevance of gener

Classification and Visualization of Chemotherapy-Induced Cognitive Impairment in Volumetric Convolutional Neural Networks.

Breast cancer is the most common female cancer worldwide, and breast cancer accounts for 30% of female cancers. Of all the treatment modalities, breast cancer survivors who have undergone chemotherapy might complain about cognitive impairment during and after cancer treatment. This phenomenon, chemo-brain, is used to describe the alterations in cognitive functions after receiving systemic chemotherapy. Few reports detect the chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) by performing functional MRI (fMRI) and a deep learning analysis. In this study, we recruited 55 postchemotherapy breast c

[Recognition of S1 and S2 heart sounds with two-stream convolutional neural networks].

Auscultation of heart sounds is an important method for the diagnosis of heart conditions. For most people, the audible component of heart sound are the first heart sound (S1) and the second heart sound (S2). Different diseases usually generate murmurs at different stages in a cardiac cycle. Segmenting the heart sounds precisely is the prerequisite for diagnosis. S1 and S2 emerges at the beginning of systole and diastole, respectively. Locating S1 and S2 accurately is beneficial for the segmentation of heart sounds. This paper proposed a method to classify the S1 and S2 based on their properti

Neural inductive matrix completion with graph convolutional networks for miRNA-disease association prediction.

MOTIVATION: Predicting the association between microRNAs (miRNAs) and diseases plays an import role in identifying human disease-related miRNAs. As identification of miRNA-disease associations via biological experiments is time-consuming and expensive, computational methods are currently used as effective complements to determine the potential associations between disease and miRNA. RESULTS: We present a novel method of neural inductive matrix completion with graph convolutional network (NIMCGCN) for predicting miRNA-disease association. NIMCGCN first uses graph convolutional networks to lear

Detecting Respiratory Pathologies Using Convolutional Neural Networks and Variational Autoencoders for Unbalancing Data.

The aim of this paper was the detection of pathologies through respiratory sounds. The ICBHI (International Conference on Biomedical and Health Informatics) Benchmark was used. This dataset is composed of 920 sounds of which 810 are of chronic diseases, 75 of non-chronic diseases and only 35 of healthy individuals. As more than 88% of the samples of the dataset are from the same class (Chronic), the use of a Variational Convolutional Autoencoder was proposed to generate new labeled data and other well known oversampling techniques after determining that the dataset classes are unbalanced. Deep convolutional neural networks for tongue squamous cell carcinoma classification using Raman spectroscopy.

With deep convolutional neural networks and fiber optic Raman spectroscopy, this study presents a novel classification method that discriminates tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) from non-tumorous tissue. To achieve this purpose, 24 tissues spectral data were first collected from 12 patients who had undergone a surgical resection due to the tongue squamous cell carcinomas. Then 6 blocks with each block including 1 convolutional layer and 1 max-pooling layer are used to extract the nonlinear feature representations from Raman spectra. The derived features form a representative vector, which

Convolutional neural network for cell classification using microscope images of intracellular actin networks.

Automated cell classification is an important yet a challenging computer vision task with significant benefits to biomedicine. In recent years, there have been several studies attempted to build an artificial intelligence-based cell classifier using label-free cellular images obtained from an optical microscope. Although these studies showed promising results, such classifiers were not able to reflect the biological diversity of different types of cell. While in terms of malignant cell, it is well-known that intracellular actin filaments are altered substantially. This is thought to be closely

Segmentation of the Proximal Femur from MR Images using Deep Convolutional Neural Networks.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a complimentary method to measure bone quality and assess fracture risk. However, manual segmentation of MR images of bone is time-consuming, limiting the use of MRI measurements in the clinical practice. The purpose of this paper is to present an automatic proximal femur segmentation method that is based on deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This study had institutional review board approval and written informed consent was obtained from all subjects. A dataset of volumetric structural MR images of the proximal femur from 86 subjec

White matter hyperintensity and stroke lesion segmentation and differentiation using convolutional neural networks.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are a feature of sporadic small vessel disease also frequently observed in magnetic resonance images (MRI) of healthy elderly subjects. The accurate assessment of WMH burden is of crucial importance for epidemiological studies to determine association between WMHs, cognitive and clinical data; their causes, and the effects of new treatments in randomized trials. The manual delineation of WMHs is a very tedious, costly and time consuming process, that needs to be carried out by an expert annotator (e.g. a trained image analyst or radiologist). The problem of

A combined model of convolutional neural networks and graph attention networks for improved classification of mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a precursor of Alzheimer's disease (AD), underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. With an aging global population, AD prevalence is rising, necessitating more precise diagnostic methods. Deep learning technology shows promise for MCI and AD classification, but existing convolutional neural network (CNN) and graph attention network (GAT) models have limitations in capturing brain structural features and detecting microlesions. To address these issues, we propose a novel approach combining a CNN and modified GAT model to improve MCI classifica

A combined convolutional and recurrent neural network for enhanced glaucoma detection.

Glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, is a multifaceted disease with several patho-physiological features manifesting in single fundus images (e.g., optic nerve cupping) as well as fundus videos (e.g., vascular pulsatility index). Current convolutional neural networks (CNNs) developed to detect glaucoma are all based on spatial features embedded in an image. We developed a combined CNN and recurrent neural network (RNN) that not only extracts the spatial features in a fundus image but also the temporal features embedded in a fundus video (i.e., sequential images). A total of 1810 fundus imag

New convolutional neural network model for screening and diagnosis of mammograms.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and poses a great threat to women's life and health. Mammography is an effective method for the diagnosis of breast cancer, but the results are largely limited by the clinical experience of radiologists. Therefore, the main purpose of this study is to perform two-stage classification (Normal/Abnormal and Benign/Malignancy) of two- view mammograms through convolutional neural network. In this study, we constructed a multi-view feature fusion network model for classification of mammograms from two views, and we proposed a multi-scale attention Den
